From Nice-To-Have Into Must-Have

The events of the past few months have only proven our point! Even before the crisis, we insisted that adopting digitalization won’t be optional to business – it will be vital for its survival.

Technology helped many companies gain additional advantages they haven’t had before. E-commerce (selling tours online) that used to be looked down upon as a “sandbox”, a place for experimenting with new technology that would only bring 2-3% of revenue, became a must-have.

This can be said about almost every other industry! Systems that many companies in the hospitality industry are building now need digital tools for managing, planning and distribution. Without these tools, it’s impossible to achieve a higher quality of services, and the risk of losing clients keeps going up!
The evolution of technologies from being nice-to-have and into must-have has also changed their perception.

However, the time when digital technologies alone were responsible for the success of a business is long gone.

The quality of the technological solution and the opportunities it offers to the company come to the fore: it has to improve the efficiency of the existing business processes and create either added value or competitive edge. In other words, the hotel business needs tools that will not only ensure its operation, but help improves its stability, efficiency and resistance to adverse conditions.

Digital Technologies Market Growth Factors

Why do we always talk about digitalization as a critical new development for the hospitality industry? Because the current crisis has proven that in these trying times, companies that had invested in digitalization turned out to be the most robust and adaptable to new challenges. This has not only helped them survive but in some cases, achieve even greater success on the market.

They were able to react and adapt to the changing landscape, launch new products and services to meet the demand, and capture the market for their benefit.

We believe that the corona crisis may be the key growth factor for the digital technology market. Perhaps, it won’t precisely be explosive growth, but it will be steady and unyielding.

To those in the hospitality industry, which are yet to implement digital technologies, this might be the time to do it.

By the way, our offer is still as good as ever! The system we have developed to manage all the ecosystems within a hotel efficiently is easy to use, entirely scalable and allows you to analyze the performance of your business. New technologies such as AI can help you see the way out of a crisis and help you save your business, or even boost its revenue severalfold!

World Of Big Data

Global digitalization has laid the foundation for a new hospitality policy. As we have already mentioned in our previous posts, “contactless” services that help you save time have a bright future ahead. At the same rate, rooms are becoming more technologically advanced and comfortable to stay in. For example, smart mirrors that are, in fact, touchscreen TV mirrors, allow guests to watch TV, check the latest news or their mail while they’re shaving or putting on make-up. With a smartphone connected to the room’s systems, guests can listen to their music, watch movies, etc.

However, when it comes to technology, simplicity is also important: with one press of a button you can turn off the lights in the entire suite, even that pesky desk lamp. To set the A/C to your liking or put up a “do not disturb” sign, you don’t even have to get out of the bed, that’s how the technology has progressed.

Digitalization has also shaped the approach to sales, as Big Data allows hoteliers to tailor each offer to the point of making the toothbrush of the guest’s favourite color.

In the vast majority of cases, the process of choosing a hotel also happens online. In addition to detailed user reviews, the most accurate picture of a hotel can be made with the help of virtual tours done through VR and AR technologies.

The data gathered by hotels and aggregators allows to tailor offers based on guests’ previous experiences (as well as their interests, preferred A/C settings, etc.)

Those who have received a tailored offer become more loyal to the hotel and are more likely to stay there next time rather than look for a different option. These days, hoteliers are working as hard as ever to build functional programs. For example, business travelers can save up points during business trips and then spend them on vacation. By creating a database of loyal customers, hoteliers increase the number of direct sales through their own websites and apps, further increasing their revenue from both its rooms and other services.

Travel Industry Is Changing

As you may know, the ModiHost platform offers a system that can analyze hotel efficiency and expose the strengths and weaknesses that need attention and which hotel owners have previously not been aware of. After the coronavirus situation, such systems offer a lot of value to the hospitality industry. Hotel owners must have a thorough knowledge of the problems their businesses are facing. Why are we talking about this? The fact of the matter is, even before the pandemic people were very receptive to good deals on rooms since a luxury suite stay was no longer the staple in the recipe for a good trip. The pandemic has shifted people’s focus to very different things: more often than not, they prefer moderately priced, clean and comfortable options.

Well, we’re not advocating for hotels to reorient towards the mass audience – that would be daft. We’re only saying that the budget segment is now more relevant than ever.

These days guests tend to demand a lot from the place of stay. Satisfying them – without sacrificing reliability and brand recognition, special offers and customized deals – will be the goal for most of the hotels in the foreseeable future. It may not be the future they chose, but that’s the hand we’ve all been dealt with.

According to a YouGov and Priority Pass study that surveyed 10,000 people from nine countries, these days people value the ability to travel the most. Researchers believe that travel will remain a priority even in times of economic downturn, and this trend remains true for the less than affluent audience. Millennials are the most avid spenders when it comes to travel: the segment will see a surge in revenue over the next ten years when the purchasing power of this generation reaches its peak. Almost 25% of those surveyed said that if they got $320 as a gift, they would put it away for the next trip.

Over the last five years, the global hospitality industry lives by the laws of the sharing economy. Futurologists predict that the tourist of the future is a worldly person who won’t pay a single extra dime for status.

That’s worth thinking about.

Japanese Hotel Offers Free Rooms

Yes, this is not a mistake! The New Shohei hotel in Japan will not charge visitors for the room if they mention they stayed in the hotel on their social media and post a photo from their stay. The hotel made this decision because of the dropoff in visitors due to the pandemic.

New Shohei is located in Tokyo, with a lot of the city’s points of interest just around the corner. Guests have at their disposal a standard room, air-conditioned rooms, free Wi-Fi and a personal bathroom.

As with most hotels in Tokyo, New Shohei experienced a sharp decline in business. On some days, the hotel didn’t see a single visitor, so the management decided to let their rooms in exchange for a social media mention!

Time will tell whether or not this move will help the hotel regain some ground.

The COVID-19 Pandemic Catalyzed New Technologies

The strive to make tourists come back faster is not unexpected. According to the UN World Tourism Organization, the tourism industry makes up more than 10% of the global GDP. After the months-long lockdown due to the virus threat, the industry is going through some callous times.

However, the pandemic situation has, beyond any reasonable doubt, accelerated the development of new technology in tourism and hospitality. In an attempt to attract tourists back to their hotels, the hospitality industry professionals are rushing to develop all kinds of contactless services. This includes cloud services where you can upload your passport and visa; the ability to not only check-in a contactless manner, but also pass the security screening at the airport with face recognition tech and contactless inspection devices; hotel check-in through mobile app instead of the reception desk. And this is only a few of the coming changes!

The adorable robot from Star Wars is no longer a fictional character: in the Trio hotel in the US, an robot similar to R2-D2 called Rose has been helping out with entertaining guests, delivering towels, wine and pet treats to rooms for years.

“Originally it was a, 'wow'," said Michael D’Amodio, vice president of Seaview Investors. "It was a way of differentiating ourselves from other hotels in the competition. People were amazed by the technology and seeing this little robot that kind of looks like R2-D2 from Star Wars delivering items to the room.”

Now, during the coronavirus pandemic, a lot of guests prefer a touchless experience, so robots like Rose have become more of a necessity than novelty, providing guests with a much-needed peace of mind.

Deliveries aren’t the only task this robot is good for in this pandemic. It can help maintain hotels’ rigorous hygiene standards. In Texas, the Westin Houston Medical Center hotel added two virus-killing robots to help out with disinfecting rooms.

World News

10% of people on the planet are employed in the tourism industry. The pandemic is ravaging this market, cutting off the primary source of income for all the people in the sector.

The coronavirus pandemic has landed a strong blow on the tourism industry. According to UN data, some 120 million people in the world risk losing their job in the sector.

Over the course of the first five months of this year international tourist flow decreased by more than a half, and the income loss has been estimated at around 320 billion dollars.

This data comes from the UN and its policy brief titled “COVID-19 and Transforming Tourism”. It’s obvious that the tourism and hospitality industries have been hard hit by the pandemic. We believe that the industry will survive it just the way it has survived other crises. Our goal today is to help hoteliers minimize losses and identify the strengths and weaknesses of their business.

As we have previously predicted, now that the hospitality industry has hit the bottom, it is looking at a slow, but steady rise back up.

Once the situation normalizes even more, the sector will further speed up its recovery. However, for the foreseeable future, the share of domestic tourism will remain large due to the fear of international air travel.

Eventually, global tourism will also pick up the pace towards recovery. The main thing that hospitality market players should think about is what new formats can they offer their guests.

Below are the trends that we see for the near future.

1. Digitalization

This trend has already gained some serious ground in the hotel industry. Companies that allow contactless services will come out on top. Smart locks, mirrors, screens, and a host of other advanced devices will become part of our lives, hotels included.

2. Comfortable eco-safety

Hotels have a long record of working towards a more eco-friendly consumption when it comes to bed sheets, towels, and plastic. Rational approach to consumption is a trend that hotel owners should look into to survive in the new reality.

3. Design in the new era

Every single hotel space must make guests feel comfortable and safe. After the pandemic health safety requirements have gained greater priority.

Trips To Thailand Won’t Be Easy

In 2019 Thailand was visited by some 40 million international tourists, but after the pandemic one of the world’s favourite travel destinations is not in a rush to lift the restrictions.

As it has become known, the requirements to tourists in the kingdom are rather strict, and they might discourage the majority of tourists from visiting the country.

Tourists must arrive at the Phuket airport, no other airport allows entering the country. All foreign visitors must stay in Phuket for at least 30 days, 14 of which they are to be quarantined in their hotel room. Some hotels allow walking within the hotel territory and even access the beach.

Over the course of the quarantine visitors must test for coronavirus twice. Only when all the requirements have been met, visitors are allowed to travel around the country.

The governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, Yuthasak Supasorn, made a statement confirming the government’s plan to open Phuket for international tourism on October 1st.

As we can see, not all countries are ready to follow Turkey in lifting the restrictions even before the pandemic is over.

Contactless Smart Hotel In China

The COVID-19 pandemic has made contactless the go-to flavour for all kinds of businesses.

A Chinese hotel chain Leyeju is the leader among contactless hotels: just 1-2 employees staff it with most of its services completely automated. Clients book the hotel online through the website or app, check-in with a face recognition system and are led to their rooms by robots. Leyeju smart hotels use artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things to improve its service. Light, AC, water temperature are controlled automatically, allowing each hotel only to be staffed by one or two employees that are there to handle emergencies. Room service works part-time, and its schedule is set through an app. Since there is no concierge, the hotel doesn’t need a large lobby, which lowers expenses and leaves more space for rooms. Overall, automation lowers Leyeju expenses by roughly 40% compared with traditional hotels.
