Struggle For Tourists

One of the very first countries to express its intention to open back up without widespread testing of all visitors for #Covid19 was Turkey.

Starting 1 July all the major airports in Turkey will be equipped with special medical booths where visitors can test for coronavirus, said Turkish Tourism Minister Mehmet Ersoy in an interview with Anadolu. He clarified that tourists would be tested free of charge. It is planned to test visitors selectively, or if high fever and other symptoms are detected.

More than 727 hotels and about 900 restaurants applied for a “Safe Tourism Certification” that would indicate they had taken standard measures to prevent COVID-19 infections, the minister stated. The changes are being rolled out under the national tourism development program that plans to increase the tourist flow into the republic up to 75 million people by 2023.

“When you think of the hotels or service providers included in the certificate program, we are the safest in European standards in certified facilities. Turkey is one of the safest countries in Europe, but some processes are stalled due to economic reasons. It is unfair but done. We are gradually overcoming them by giving the correct answer to every question they bring to us,” said Mehmet Ersoy.

Thailand To Turn Away From Mass Tourism In Favour Of Wealthy

Coronavirus is, as always, unpredictably changing the market! Thailand might close down for tourists on a budget. The Tourism Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn believes it is essential to reset the country’s tourism strategy, after the coronavirus lockdown is lifted, by limiting the access for small tourists.

The authorities clarified that marketing efforts would be geared towards the wealthier individuals who have booked four and five-star hotels on Phuket, Ko Samui, Pha-ngan and Phi Phi. “If we don’t use this chance to create the most benefit for the industry, Thailand will lose out,” the minister said.

This topic was instantly picked up by social media communities. Judging from the general sentiment in the comments, most have brushed off the announcement.

New Offers From Oldest Luxury Hotel Group

The hospitality industry is waking up. Slowly but surely, hoteliers realize that the global change demands to be followed by a difference in their offers to the guests.

Today we will tell you about how the oldest luxury hotel group in Europe – Kempinski Hotels has refreshed its value proposition.

If you booked a room at any of the chain’s hotels across the world before 10 June 2020, you were eligible for the Make A Travel Promise offer. It includes a flexible cancellation policy and rebooking as well as a room upgrade, welcome drinks and a discount of up to 25% at restaurants and bars. The offer stands until late March 2021.

Besides, all hotels of the chain feature Staycations, targeted at guests from the immediate vicinity of the hotels. Both offers were developed as a response to the global halt in tourism due to COVID-19.

Kempinski Hotels was founded in 1897. The group currently operates 76 five-star hotels and residences in 34 countries.

The Hotels Who Survived. Promotion During Crisis

What we’re currently going through has already been acknowledged as the worst tourism industry crisis since 1950. The United Nations World Tourism Organization has been making cautious forecasts for the recovery of the industry, and they mainly focus on fall-winter 2020. However, they mostly talk about domestic tourism.

The UNWTO has put forth three possible scenarios. The most optimistic one says that in 2020 international travel will drop to 60%. The worst-case scenario suggests the figure is 20%.
In this situation, hotels are trying to find a way out by offering early booking for the winter and next summer. This approach requires tourists to put tremendous trust in hotels. In a world where it isn’t easy to plan even one month, very few can afford to book this early. With that in mind, hotels need to show reliability and trustworthiness.

We believe that now it is especially important to invest in long-term relationships with your clientele as well as soften and reassure your potential clients. Even if the season is low, you shouldn’t put everything on hold and withdraw into the shadows – you will be forgotten and quickly replaced.

Then again, the domestic tourism sector is now thriving with opportunities that you shouldn’t pass up. It’s the best time to actively seek out new clients, build long-term relationships and promote domestic tourism in your country.

Your goal now is to get by until better times come, make the right moves and stay in the market!

How Will European Hotels Compensate For Shutdown?

The tourism industry in Spain that has been growing for the past five years can’t survive without the outside traffic – pre-crisis it accounted for 40 to 50% of tourists. This is why hotels are very interested in a swift recovery of the tourist flow. The country is now anticipating the restart of international tourism.

The Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sánchez has announced the start of the season on July 1. The forecasts around the hotel sector jacking up the prices to recoup the losses caused by the lockdown have not yet been proven to be true. Quite on the contrary, hoteliers show readiness to keep the pre-covid booking terms, and even offer upgrades for the same price.

The highest hotel discounts compared to the regular pricing can be found in Mallorca. Hotels in this welcoming island paradise can offer discounts of up to 30%. Other resorts have 10-20% discounts on early booking.

A similar situation can be seen in other countries. Resorts are not the only ones to suffer. Popular tourist-oriented European capitals are not getting the traffic they used to even after the official green light from the authorities. “In June, Vienna saw a very small number of bookings, with occupancy no higher than 10%,” says ORF.at. That’s why booking prices there are much less than usual.

Analysts forecast the slump in occupancy and demand across the entire industry will continue until the fall season. Starting September, the business travel sector will begin to rebound, provided travel restrictions are at least relaxed. Large cities and tourist regions in Austria hope to bring back staff to pre-covid levels by the second quarter of 2021. Prices are expected to come back to old levels around the same time.

Hotel railway car. Now, you aren’t ready for!

We’ve been introducing you to anti-pandemic hotel ideas from all over the world every week, so in this instalment, we’ll talk about Russia. We found a rather ingenious accommodation idea in this country.

Live in a converted railroad car hotel? In comfort? Seems unheard of, doesn’t it? Well, that’s exactly what a Russian railroad company did. Surprisingly, businesses have already got on board with the idea as a great accommodation option for their staff.

The main reason being the quarantine restrictions and social distancing requirements are making it difficult for companies to ensure continuous operation, especially considering remote work. With the pandemic in full swing and its stringent social distancing orders, the option to accommodate staff in railroad cars is the perfect solution to an entire heap of issues.

What’s interesting is that a separate hotel car can arrive at the nearest station to the business looking to use its services. This enables companies to provide its employees with safe and comfortable accommodation, full meals and leisure services as well as medical isolation in case of employees arriving from affected regions.

The railroad company managing the hotel has already rented out a sleeper and a dining car. For over a month these cars will host 20 employees who will get three meals a day and enjoy a comfortable stay. The sleeper car features all the necessary conveniences for that – water and power supply systems, heater and a/c, lavatory and showers.

How else can ModiHost system benefit you

Today we will speak again about how your hotel can benefit from the efficiency-focused hotel management system that we have developed.

Attract the most profitable customers

Not all guests have the same value to a hotel: if we take the Pareto principle, 80% of profit is created by just 20% of clients. With the powerful analytics, the ModiHost system has, you can determine who your most profitable guests are and send them personalized offers to motivate them to come back.

Sell more additional services

In a soft market, low demand can be partially compensated for with revenue from services other than accommodation. Our system can gather all the data about your guests across all of your venues, including their spending on food, drinks, meetings, events, entertainment, sport and SPA. With a single database on hand, you can analyze the spending habits of your guests and reorient towards those who bring more profits. You can upsell various services in your SPA, restaurant or bar.

Promote profit growth

With ModiHost, hotels can make the upselling process more successful. For example, even before the guests check-in, you can send them personalized letters based on their preferences, past purchases and behaviour – upsell a better room or make a preorder of additional services, food and events in the hotel.

Not only does this increase your profits and helps make more money on the more expensive rooms, but improves the quality of service for all your guest.

Hoteliers shouldn’t sleep on this!

A lot of countries have already lifted the quarantine restrictions. Ahead are both the business travel and vacation seasons, but even now, hotel performance analysis remains relevant among hoteliers. We want to focus on two less obvious criteria that you should consider.

Discounts hurt in the long-term

Yes, offering discounts when the season is winding down is the first thing that comes to mind, like an instinct. “Studies show that hotels that are quick to offer discounts during crises may take the longest to recover when demand comes back,” says Dan Scodol, Vice President of Data Science and Analytics at Cendyn.

“When demand returns and you try to put the prices where they used to be, the most profitable clients such as business travellers, event and wedding organizers will be hesitant about going along with the price increase,” says Neville Isaac, Head of Customer Service at Beonprice, a Spanish IT company.

Price reduction can lead to a slow recovery in terms of revenue.

Your competition has changed.

Professionals in hotel revenue usually consider just 6-7 similar hospitality providers in the area as their competition.

“But when people start travelling again, who you think is your competition may not be who any given consumer might consider it to be,”, says Jens Munch, CEO of Pace, a British IT company.

A classic example: a four-star hotel that cuts prices during a crisis to snatch away some customers from a competing three-star hotel.

“You’ll especially want to re-evaluate who you’re competing against if your value proposition has changed because you’ve temporarily shut down your food-and-beverage or spa, for example,” says Nevin Reed, a revenue management expert at Duetto.

Why use HMS ModiHost?

Our sophisticated HMS allows you to structure and streamline the processes of any hotel or chain. Today we will tell you how the system with integrated AI, Machine Learning, Cognitive Computing and Native Voice Recognition technologies can help hoteliers!

Multiple source guest data aggregation

The secret to driving growth in 2020 is to create ideas and make decisions based on data. Thanks to our system, hotels will have all the data they need on their guests in a single database that will gather information from multiple sources, for example, PMS, payment systems and third-party data providers.

The unified database will save time on searching for information across multiple applications as well as eliminate data migration errors and increase data accuracy.

For hotel chains: aggregate data from all venues

AI allows tracking guest behaviour and figuring out their preferences based on the data from all the hotels within the chain, aggregated within one common database. This will help identify your frequent guests so you can offer them the best possible rooms and additional services, increasing the overall guest experience.

Better marketing campaigns

The key to better profits in digital marketing is personalization. Marketing professionals say that targeted, personalized approach yields 20% more sales on average. With our system, you will be able to gather data about your guests from the critical points of contact as well as group them by interests, preferences and behaviour patterns. Use this grouping to create super personalized offers and adverts.

Data for the right decisions

When the budget is limited, you can’t rely on guesswork and intuition. The ModiHost management system helps gather and combine data points necessary to make the right decisions. This helps minimize risks and maximize results.

How to keep guests and their loyalty during the crisis

The time is now to show your guests how much you value them. It doesn’t matter if they are making or cancelling their bookings. We have gathered a few useful recommendations for hotels that are looking to save their guests’ loyalty and keep them through the crisis.

Offer to rebook

Instead of cancelling their bookings, offer guests to rebook to a later date. It should be possible to rebook an unlimited number of times at any time, even if it’s just one day before their visit.

Reconsider cancellation fees

Your guests are also in a tight spot, and it’s not always that people can reschedule a vacation instead of cancelling it. To maintain their loyalty, do them a favour: provide a full refund, even if it’s against the cancellation policy.

Create a flexible cancellation schedule

A lot of people are planning their future vacations and trips. Because of the current uncertainty, guests are hesitant about booking non-refundable offers. This is why we suggest you reconsider the existing cancellation and refund policy to make it more flexible. For example, offer the possibility of a refund just one day before the check-in. This will help you get more bookings when people get back to travelling more often.

Enable a delayed bank card payment

We have analysed guest behaviour in several hotels and found out that they are already looking for accommodation for the summer vacation season, but are still wary of committing with their money. This is why we suggest you add an option to make a delayed online payment through a particular timed link you provide to the guest. You decide when and for how long the relationship will be active.

Tell your guests about the special offers on booking

Please make it so that your website visitors immediately learn about the flexible booking policy you offer, for example, through a pop-up widget. Through this widget, you can communicate the best offers: discounts, delayed payment, free refunds.

When the quarantine restrictions are finally lifted, and people get back to travelling, you will be ready to receive guests as you have always been!
