Has anyone changed their ethereum strategy since the "forking"?  I'm reading articles leading me to believe that there are now two ethers.  Is this correct, or am I misunderstanding?
I'm mining whole day ETC+SIA instead of ETH+SIA

Pool or solo?  If pool, where?

I just checked the prices vs mining speeds and GPU mining is dead. Rip.

Spread the news.. i always love it when people think/say that Smiley The more there is for me Smiley

LOL.... good one, all I can say is.... hmmmm... listening to a jazz tune now...  Cheesy

Sia benefits from the extra shaders. 594 Mh/s vs 629Mh/s

Unlocking the 290 -> 290x also unleashes an extra ~30watts of consumption. (if the card is soft locked and allows it).

Mining only eth  you would wan't your 290x ->290 (or even less shaders if you know how to disable them). I was actually doing it (disabling even more shaders) but then I started dual mining SIA

Actually no - most R9 290 do NOT work well if at all with a R9 290x BIOS - a few of the early ones do 'cause they used the same chip with a BIOS disablement, but that didn't last very long.

The R9 290x doesn't mine Ethereum any faster than the R9 290 does anyway - they're memory subsystem limited, not "number of cores" limited - the big help the Stilt BIOS does is to tighten up the memory timings a LOT making it effectively quite a bit faster (as well as turning off some of the parts of the card that aren't needed for mining, allowing for overclocking).

There are coins (and projects that can lead to coins) that would benefit if your R9 290 card *IS* one of the few that's actually a R9 290x under the hood - Ethereum just isn't one of them.

ASIC rating would be what it's called - I remember running across that during my search for working copies of TheStilt BIOS series for the R9 290.

It seems to have more to do with how well a GPU can be undervolted as opposed to how well it can overclock, but probably affects both to some degree.

Talking about Stilt BIOS, where do I download a good copy?

I inherited a 290 and 290x for helping out in a project, and I was advised that its a great "sin" NOT to use Stilt BIOS on these cards  Cheesy

If you use that for Ethereum mining only, you can flash the 290 BIOS to the 290X cards to save some energy.

Phil, you still on Nano pool, saw you switched a while back and I know you are on top on the pools so just checking, running 660Mh now and been mostly on Nano pool but this weekend gave Etherite a try and been good so far, he's doing a zero fee promo and looks like good backend code and pretty nice front-end. Low latency to the pool also from NE.

Just seeing where its at these days....

I would uninstall msi

I would uninstall my amd drivers.

boot.

I would install my amd drivers

boot

I would install msi

boot

Takes 20 minutes should work

I did like this - now it is working

Thank you!

good glad to help.
I just reconfigured a rig a day or two ago and did the same .  it is why I knew how to fix it.

it is the by the book method works most of the time.

...

But I kept a rig and it just sat on a shelf doing nothing. I decided to bring it back to life.

Cost = zero usd.

Some details and photos to follow.

The rig is a sapphire hd7970 with a huge heat sink the biggest and baddest around .  I can not get my hd7970 to overheat.

a h77 mobo asrock----- I can get a second card on this board
a crucial ssd 500 gb----------- over kill
a seasonic bronze psu
2 sticks for 4gb ram  8gb total 1833 speed
an intel 2500t cpu low power draw
a cheap cpu intel cooler

...

Omg dude thank you so much. I feel way better now that I see all these new coins with different methods. I really though GPU mining was dead thank you for proving me wrong I'm gonna go do all my research and give it a go too. Thanks man !

There is some money to be made with this.
I got as high as 14 cards was mining at 330mh

I sold off some gear that the last 60 days of mining paid for.

So I am down to 240mh. 10 card and five rigs.
I am almost fully roi'd between the coins and the sale of some of the gear. I have mined about 60 days.

I did have a ton of parts in the house which is how I got to roi so quick.

yeah some cards needed small heatsinks to be added to ram/vrms when going with aftermarket coolers.

Yes and every card stood on its own.

I will say this a quality cooler does allow for better overclock but. Every gpu chip has a percent rating.

I think gpu-z shows it low number like 60 means the card is a good under clock

A high number like 80 mean the card is a good over clock.

ASIC rating comes to my mind on the chip rating but frankly I do not remember.

Just saw the R9 480 announcement...

480 just as good as 390 in terms of raw power and 150watts only, and it retails for $199 !!!

This is really good timing since we need powerful GPUs suitable for ETH mining, draws less power and recyclable for a decent gaming rig!

it will consume less, right now a 1070 has the same tdp and can do 27MH with only 100w

tdp is just the target the real consumption can be tweaked with the mv in play

buying nano right nano is a bit stupid with those gpu, i would wait

I have a Nano rig now in progress, 6 x Nano, 175.8MHs with 1100watts !

you can use the mod to have something along the line of 134MH with only 500-600w

I got to the -175mV mod today. I have not tried the ultimate -200mV ...

Not seen any power consumption difference between the 175 and 200 mv mods

how is that?  lower volts should drop power use.

Not so easy to reach the 175 mod, on my 3rd attempt now.
But on 150 mod, I managed to get a rig stable at 6xNano at 176MHs but drawing 1334watts.
I hope to get 175 or 200 mods working to get me 185Mhs with 1050watts.

how do you think you add a cooler?

you remove the old one. ie  a teardown of the  other shell and the  cooler.

Now it is clear - I thought it is some sort of outer shell for GPU Smiley

This is why I like to ask Phil!

Thank you!

My older hd7970 sapphires were easy to replace a fan my old xfx hd7970 were very difficult to do.
