Let he who is without sin cast the first stone
Never mined ETH, wouldn't it have been cheaper given the costs and electric pull of the graphics cards  - to just buy the ETH?

I've not built and AMD-based machine in 10 years, ever since the Core2 Conroe CPUs came on the scene. However, this 4 x16 slot board has me thinking....

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16813128859

With a $70 mobo, a reasonable CPU ($75 or less?), and DDR3 memory (I have an abundance of this stuff), i think I may roll the dice and see how it goes.  Anyone care to talk me out of it for some reason I'm overlooking?  I know AMD CPUs run hot.  Not sure which CPU to even consider.

-EDIT-

Okay, dang... used CPUs can be had via ebay for ~$10!

The rosewill for 60 usd has eight slots. You need eight as a minimum .
But I do not know if the biostar z170 will line up correctly.
Rosewill has a ten slot. The Thor v2 for 99
That should work but it is more money.

I don't know if it is worth buying as I have a second fear and that is that the cards may overheat in a case.

We know they work great in open air.

Right now I am gear rich and coin short.

I ordered a third biostar z170 and will build a rig with four rx 470s.

I would really like to order the as rock mobo for 180 after rebate but newegg taxes me so it comes to 194 plus 99 for the rosewill Thor v2.

I have to talk with buysolar about moving at least one unit to the solar array.

I am going to order this case

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147053&cm_re=rosewill_thor_v2-_-11-147-053-_-Product

10$ off with this code  EMCEMEN36  10 pcie slots  I grabbed it with the code it was 96 usd after taxes

i like the setup of that one. on the 8 slot i have the same biostar board so ill see if the board lines up with the case... if not the unraid server could use an updated case

Or save a few more $ by going LINUX - once you get the first machine up and running, it's TRIVIAL to "clone" a working setup using DD to copy the working HD setup to another one, or if you make it small enough clone it to a USB flash drive.

I use Claymore Dual Miner and it has Linux version -- but I use Windoze purely for lower learning curve, OC & UV and driver support....

Back to the 4xGPU configuration _ I have asked Phil about getting a suitable chassis for it.

I'm planning to get my current open rigs to be "racked" or put into proper chassis for ISP hosting.

I'm paying too much for power and hosting my mini farm will be a viable choice.

Upon more investigation.... 4 x GPU config like Biostar and ASrock, will need a FULL TOWER chassis.

A full tower chassis is around 99-149$ USD -- full ATX tower, maxed for 4 GPU.

Mid towers seems fit only for 3xGPU Z170 ATX.

I am not even going to explore 6xGPU custom configs like Gray Matter type chassis - easily 300-400$USD each.

Even generic brand full tower or server rack style chassis is about 200-300 $ at AliExpress.

If anyone has some suggestions - appreciate it for discussions.

Thanks!

This case should fit 4 cards, each being 2x wide.  Not a bad price (~$60).

Have you looked into hosting a PC?  I guess I've never thought about it.  I have my S7s hosted at Oregon Mines.  I suppose I see no reason they would not host a PC.  It would need to come up and automatically mine upon startup.  Turn off automatic updates, if running windows.  Time to go linux?   Wink

i have a case coming in tuesday that is the same design as that one so ill be able to give a for sure if it will hold 4 2x cards

i was stepping into linux the other day the only problem i had was my network would time out on the system..

There are a few smaller cases that can handle 4x dual slot boards - but the lowest cost ones I've been able to find were $60 and up on Newegg, and tend to not have really great cooling setups, or were quite a bit MORE expensive to get one with a good cooling setup - and you NEED to add better fans even on the "good cooling setup" cases to get adaquate airflow for a 4xGPU machine which drives the price up a good bit more.

2 x 6 card rigs usually end up taking MORE total space than 3 x 4 card rigs CAN take, as the risers and their cables soak quite a bit of space.
They also tend to be a bigger pain to set up, and reliability isn't as good a lot of the time.

Often and often I think about hosting a rig somewhere - to do it one will need a professional open air frame

I'm opening a separate topic on it:

Please share you ideas, design and where to buy

I think as long as it's not a reference card (one fan, all boxed in) it should have an 8 pin but I could be wrong.

That what I though too - but it will be really pity to lose 5 days and realize that card still has just 6 pins

True that.. I guess we have to look for product images and reviews plus check on manufacturer's website.

The asrock has a $30 rebate now so it comes to 180, it also has 3 extra 1x slots if you want to switch to risers/ribbons and add more cards later you could go to 7 cards.
Aftermarket RX470/480 cards should run fine on plain ribbon cables cos they have the 8 pin pci-e connector.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157649&ignorebbr=1

the asrock looks promising  as an upgrade from the biostar  it does have a 4 pin added power to the mobo feature

the biostar also allows for  extra cards  but  I am going riser less and staying at 4 cards on purpose for three reasons

1)very compact build here
2)less heat
3)  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139119&cm_re=corsair_ax760-_-17-139-119-_-Product    89 bucks for the psu and it will work
as I am running  my first build for months with the ax760
3a) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151102&cm_re=seasonic_850watt-_-17-151-102-_-Product    second build psu

1) It is nice and compact, BUT 2x6 card rigs are more compact than 3x 4 card rigs for the same number of 12 cards. Unless you live in a 150sq ft tiny house I don't see a point in saving a few inches.. Smiley
2) It's actually more heat because for the same number of 12 cards you're running an extra rig, psu, cpu.
The more you maximze your cards per rig the more you increase the efficiency and reduce costs it seems.

Are any serial numbers or any other ways to spot the 8 pin power connection? 90% of cards do not have it written in their specs
