I'd like to suggest letting anyone post but have their first message (or first few messages) moderated.
I used this policy for my yahoo groups and never had any spam problems.

That's I think tough since it requires manual Moderator work. With a forum the size of BitCoinTalk...that may be problematic.

On the one hand I absolutely understand the need for newbie restrictions as a kind of idiot filter.

But it's hard to have to wait before I can ask bot-developers questions Sad
