Thank you for this amazing advice which is absolutely right. Many newbies have actually been scammed with hypes from projects and paid users do best for any newbie is to rely on old useful coins not new hyped projects as it may ruin Thier lives and finance. Best choice is to pick top coins.

The rule "Newbies are safer with top altcoins" not always work. Here is my story:

Once I've bought Waves and hoped they will have a good financial future. I've expected to double my investments, specially when it was announced Waves will be the blockchain project with government support will be using. Waves were top15-20 that they.

Right now they are on 67 place. Half a year ago they were somewhere around top50. For me, the rule "being safe with top alts" doesnt work at all. Person is safe with an alt he made a research on and weighed all the consequences.

i think the best option for newbie is to focus on top coins and buy when the price drops then sell when it moons . But that does not erase the fact that they have to settle down and study the market before investing.
i noticed that some of the newbies think crypto is a get rich quick scheme therefore they expect to get 100% profit within 24 hours and when this does not happen they give up .
Do not forget even after buying a top coin like btc you may experience a dump in price and have to wait for weeks or months for it to moon so you can make profits.

The Coinmarketcap list will be updated by liquidity pool. Volume can be increased by fake or scam exchange help, for this effect any coin will be listed in the top like Tagz exchange. Not only newbies, we should all buy Bitcoin or top coin to protect our money.  I think that's how the market won't be meaningless statistics.

There was an article published in Coindesk a few months back. It dealt with service providers, who would manipulate the trade volumes for less known coins and tokens, for the exchange of a monetary reward. They use bots and fake users to achieve this objective. And in most cases, Coinmarketcap is unable to differentiate between the real and fake volumes for these coins.

Newbies are safer with bitcoin, and avoiding altcoins altogether.

Marketcap is a meaningless statistic. I could create a new token right now, print 1 billion of them, sell a single token to my friend for $10, and now my market cap is $10 billion and I'm the third "top" coin. Just because an altcoin is in the "top 10", means nothing. At least half the coins in the "top 10" are literal scams.

Top altcoins aren't 100% safe either since they aren't stable coins and also remember that projects that aren't scam can still fail because of other problems but new projects are 80% famous to be a hit and run projects

Not just newbie but every investor top altcoins are the best to invest if you want to have a secure investment.
Most new crypto are just scam so we should really avoid it or try to dig a little deeper to find out if they are worthy to invest in.
But if you couldn't do it or decide then just stick to the top altcoins.
I do not agree with that. I believe that most of the old altcoins are scammers, and new projects are really smart teams who want to bring something new to the world of cryptocurrencies. I especially  DEFI projects that appeared recently

Seek for more crypto knowledge before investing in new projects, it's not always that easy to choose, as a newbie it's better to stick with old top altcoins on coinmarketcap, why? Because many newbie are in rush to make fast returns, if you are this type pls go for better top coins, 90% of new coins aren't serious at all, they are here to steal money from investors and give fake promises in return

Newbies are safer with top altcoins until they start learning how to choose wisely, do better diggings on new project to avoid scams

Cov-19 have been used to scam many newbies and even Corona virus coins are built too which have no real use cases

Play safe and be willing to learn

You are all right, you have to be careful. But the point is not even in the current situation in the world, the fact is that fraud and losses were before, are now and will be further. In any business sphere and the sphere of finance there are problems and risks, which means that you must always be on the alert. Cryptocurrencies were successful in their time and still attract many newcomers to get quick profits. What is better for investing new or old altcoins? Personally, I work more with ETH and LTC and believe that they can show at least one more leap up. However, I also understand that I can lose, which means I always take risks into account. You also need to do, you can believe in success, but also remember that you can lose everything.

Altcoins are probably the safetiest way to start with crypto. Starting with the known coin like Bitcoin, Ethereum, litecoinand Bitcoin cash could cost a fortune. It's a safer way for newbie to start. It has lots of advantages attached. I started with altcoins too and I has really paid off. But I must be sincere having other known coins like Bitcoin is really a fortune. A opportunity of a lifetime.
This is very funny if you consider Bitcoin as Altcoin, Grin it seems like you have to learn even more in terms of grouping coins and tokens and learn which tokens are included in the Altcoin category, and one more thing you have to understand is that not all Altcoin is becoming the safest way to start with crypto, even though newbies start with the famous Altcoin, they still have a big risk.

It's a good advice though. As a newbie in crypto investment, it's a good advice to look for projects that are already established in the market, for example those in the top 10 on coin market capitalization.  Without some experience and ability to do some research, it's very risky investing in the new projects as a newbie to avoid huge loss.

There are many cheap altcoins in this market such as ADA, TRON, XLM ... these are the best altcoins that people should buy and hold. Do not waste money on new projects in this market, they will need a lot of time to develop and prices can be reduced many times after being listed at exchanges.

You are labelling them as cheap, because they have fallen by as much as 99% from the ATH levels. For example, Cardano reached an exchange rate of $1.23 per coin almost two years ago, but then crashed to $0.02 in 2020. Now once again it is undergoing a bull run and the current exchange rate is $0.10 per coin. Almost 500% increase from the levels that we saw 4 months back, but still 90% down from the ATH.
Obviously, it is too cheap compared to ATH in 2017. Most altcoins in the top 100 have dropped more than 20 times compared to ATH, so you can completely buy and hold them in the long term to get profit.

I disagree. If they have fallen by 95% or more, then the reason is that the investors don't believe in their potential. We all know that what happened in 2017 was a bubble. Many of the relatively unknown coins went to have multi-billion market cap. And even worse, the spike was only a result of pure speculation rather than due to an increase in usage or adoption.

Top coins are not always safe, and coins at the top have a very high chance of falling, so stop thinking "that it will be safe to play on top crypto". Regarding knowledge, I often find it difficult to learn and deepen knowledge in cryptocurrency, because we do not easily find the information we need and need extra patience to understand information in a news (due to countless FUDs) Cryptocurrency that is decentral is equal to full risk.
I think it can be considered as a safe zone based on the liquidity that owned by the major coins. Remember this when people wanna decrease their loss and they need a lot of liquidity to make them all can dump their portfolios at once. This can also give them more guarantee to get a small loses compared when trying to use the crap coin with no liquidity

Newbies are always in rush to make profits, advising them to go for top altcoins is safer but they won't listen, not until they make few mistakes, top altcoins are safer for those who are new to crypto but as learning and experience goes on they will be open up to trying out new risks and that's the way it should be
Our task as those who already know is to give good advice and explanations, the case they do not listen to suggestions or explanations from those who already have experience, it is not our business, maybe they are better prepared with a high risk in crypto.

Well in my opinion, it really depends on what kind of investment a newcomer to cryptocurrency is willing to undergo and experience. We know that newcomers to Bitcoin and cryptocurrency has little to no experience to this technology and how it works and all, so it is not safe to say that they have good financial knowledge at this point so they need to be very careful so that they would not make any rash decisions that would affect their financial well being. As many have pointed out, not all in the top ten or even top twenty are good coins to invest.

I can't agree more, you have rightly pointed out the need for newbies to stick to already popular alt coins with verified history of reliability.

There are countless of alt coins out there, many are fraud, and some are managed by incompetent team. so for newbies who are hoping to climb the trading ladder, it would be a disaster investing in the wrong cryptocurrency.

With this pandemic, things have gotten worse when it comes to picking alt coins, even for pro traders, however, emphasis is placed on newbies because they need to be safe from fake coins, so they wouldn't suffer huge loss.

If someone buys tokens or coins just because they see ATH in 2017, then they will feel disappointed at that decision, because ATH like in 2017 will be difficult to return, because the demand and supply of tokens in the crypto market always changes every year.
Nothing is impossible, if bitcoin can return $ 20k then I believe that altcoin will grow and return to ATH. But it only happens to the top altcoins in this market
