The best for newbie is BTC ETH or some top altcoins, anybody going for any new listed altcoins may end up sinking unless one is extremely careful and study the market very well. I have been an old member and still list huge from projects so would be better for newbies to buy top coins to be safer.
Ethereum, Bitcoin, XRP in my opinion the safest for beginners, do not just buy altcoin, make sure the project fundamentals are good and have a large volume, then you will be safe
bitcoin is not altcoin but bitcoin is the main coin, for new traders I think it is more suitable if trading with altcoin which has cheap prices but also has very good potential such as XLM, XRP, Litecoin and BNB which in my opinion can benefit and can be used for trading long term or short term.

it's not only for newbies but even those who have been in cryptocurrency for a long time are always careful to determine altcoins, many of them do prefer investing in top altcoin, even though it's not 100% but at least they can minimize losses because new altcoins are mostly bullshit which can cause a lot of money loss
As right now Bitcoin is rising many members cannot afford to have this in this case best option is just go with some reputable and solid coins is never been bad because they are also doing good for some long time like Ethereum, Litecoin, BNB and XRP if someone will invest in these coins surely he will never feel bad about his investment because these can give good profit in long run.

I think as the market structure is, already majority of new comers are coming to the market with btc as their first purchase, i know i came like this, so i assume most of newbies are already safe but actually things get bad due to greed as some newbies just start chasing every shiny project or coin and end up losing their precious btc. I think new comers should realize that being greesdy will not help try to give time to the market first, learn how everything works and follow the seniors to analyse a new project and then you can make tour own wise decision.

The only safety i am very conversant with on the crypto currency trading and investment is doing it right.
How do you do it right?

You do your own research
You follow market trends
You unlearn to relearn facts you have researched
You determine when you enter the market and also project your profit margins.

And always remember, neither newbies, or professionals are favored when it comes to trading crypto currencies.

That's right if they are scared of losing their money in any blockchain startup but with top altcoins like Ethereum, Tron, and Binance. If any newbie invest into any of these coin and hold it for very long term it will definitely be worth it in the future unlike new coins that just dumps and never rises up again.

Newbies are safer with top altcoins until they start learning how to choose wisely, do better diggings on new project to avoid scams

Cov-19 have been used to scam many newbies and even Corona virus coins are built too which have no real use cases

Play safe and be willing to learn

Your points are valid, it's better for a newbie who just got into crypto to invest in top altcoins, BTC taking a lion share of the portfolio rather than running here and there looking for new coins to invest in. Imagine scammers taking advantage of COVID19 to prey on newbies, who are not so good with research. For those who are old in the space, it won't be difficult to spot scam projects but not for newbies.

Seek for more crypto knowledge before investing in new projects, it's not always that easy to choose, as a newbie it's better to stick with old top altcoins on coinmarketcap, why? Because many newbie are in rush to make fast returns, if you are this type pls go for better top coins, 90% of new coins aren't serious at all, they are here to steal money from investors and give fake promises in return

Your advice is good and will definitely be helpful to those who would yield to it, but it would have been good if you are more specific. Top altcoins are invariance and not many of them are able to sustain their position. That is why you see some of them go back to below 100th position and lose their prices. Investing in the top 5 could be more advisable and among the top 10 to 12, there are promising ones, particularly those that can go as far as above top 10. Also, if newbies are desirous to learn how to choose well and invest, before investing, they can still find good altcoins with low marketcap.

As in any endeavour, you need to learn the ropes to be able to stay safe and not burn your resources. It is not just dealing with top altcoins, you need to learn the fundamentals or you will panic during the storm

Beginners do have to start by investing in projects that have been running for quite a long time and of course it's good, they can invest in bitcoin or altcoin major like ethereum and others. But that does not guarantee 100% safe because basically cryptocurrency has a high risk.
If beginners invest in those projects which are already running more than 2-3 years, i mean which started in 2017 or 2018, than it can be a risky things for them. As most of the Foundation and team member's tokens are already unlocked, it can a game of pump-dump. So, it's better for everyone to invest in those old project which have real potentiality as well as use-cases for the upcoming days. But investing in Bitcoin or Ethereum isn't bad for long runs.

But nowadays, we need to remember that only a small fraction of the new projects are successful. An even smaller proportion gives good returns to the investors.
If Im going to rate it or at least says in percentage I think 90% of those new coins can survive or at least stay for 5years. Newbies shoulf understand that mostly these coins are created or even launched to gain profits in trading. From what I see, only existing coins are still alive and if you notice the market list, top 50 are those stable and just play on position on the ranking. Few only got listed then eventually stay for years. Give or take most coins are probably will died out 5years or out of 10 projects only 2 will be retain. The ratio is small but thats the truth.

Not only the newbies. I like to think top coins based on coinmarketcap ranking is safe for everyone's investment. Not just top Altcoins but top Altcoins that has stayed long in the space. A lot of new Altcoins made it to top 100 this year we cannot fully assertain if these are safe or not but I trust the ones that has stayed for years more than the new ones.
Of course, long-surviving coins can also be the right choice for investing. Altcoin which in top 20 is always make a lot of investors who invest there, of course that's because they feel safe with top 20 coins. So it's not only Newbi who feels safe with top coins, all investors also feel like that.
But you need this to monitor because as I have observed the last year, altcoins in the top 10 were now on the top 30. So maybe you could not able to store this in the long term. What I mean is altcoins are not potential for long term holding, maybe it is profitable if in the short term only and under your observation of course. Maybe the top 10 altcoins are considered as safe but not long term.

well most of the newbies come to crypto space hoping they will get rich by investing small portion of their money to altcoins.
Majority isn't interested in the tech they are only here for the next x100 coin. So for this sort of gains majority of time if you see the top gainers section on the CMC
some random shitcoin post such gains occasionally on  some random shit exchange.
The truth of the matter is no where is safe.. all the coins are just fluctuating due the volatile nature of cryptocurrencies. I will side with you on them going for the top coins due to their only ability to bounce back even if there is a massive dip.
Obviously, in terms of making a profit on a coin, it is better to choose the old coins rather than new coins or coins that are being developed, because the old coins have very strong foundations despite sudden price drops, but are still able to rise all of a sudden too.

yes it's true but greed is the primary motive here most of the newbies aren't interest in 5-10% gains they are looking for 3 digit gains.

Well.. with the current state of market, it will be really risky to invest in little known coins. The situation is different from the one we had back in 2017. Back then, those who invested in some of the new coins got up to 100x or 200x profit. But nowadays, we need to remember that only a small fraction of the new projects are successful. An even smaller proportion gives good returns to the investors.

I do agree with your statement and the only safe place was stable coin or crypto that backed by the commodity. Even bitcoin that for some people have already considered as the safest place is still making some newbies getting loses too. There was no safe place when it's coming to the speculation market.

Not just newbies, everyone would be better off with top coins, the most trusted is btc we already know that, investment should done with such caution because no one can predict what could happen in future, in my opinion, only btc should be long term, any other alts can be short to mid term, because lately you here cases of exit scam in a project,  or team dumping on holders, etc,
So btc still the safest investment and probably eth to diversify a bit.
