NXT is a coin and project with great potential but ended up in the “Second Plan” due to the launch of ARDOR and IGNIS. It's an interesting ecosystem that deserves more attention. I hope they can proceed with these releases!

Yes! Still alive and theres still forger (miners). Not much activity or development compare to its upgraded version which is Ardor.

I haven't tried forging. You need to open your node all the time in the network just like mining POW Chains.

Is there any active development going on here? No reason to assume this is beyond a historical relic at this point if the answer is "no."
Does this thing have smart contract capability?
This is actually a good question and the answer is "yes" but they are not interoperable with other blockchains.
I traded NXT on Bittrex in 2014, that was back when Richie Lai handled customer service.
It was a great, new idea (introduced "assets", aka "tokens", along with smart contracts and DEXs) but was quickly overshadowed by the rise of Ethereum.

Why?
I remember this coin was worth more than $ 2 ... All the value went to ARDR and IGNIS. The whole team quarreled among themselves. POS never leads to good.
