We're in the process of finalising a design for this - the tough thing is making sure the fabricated prototype works without buying a whole setup. We're getting there!
With the potential of selling several hundred...... maybe you should get 1 backplane to build off of?

I take it if I get the 4 GPU version that it is not as large as the 8 GPU version? The picture just makes it seem so big and I only currently have 3 GPUs but am looking to get a 4th one very soon.

Yes - the 8 GPU is pictured, the 4 GPU unit is not as wide, just over half of the 8 GPU unit. Should've made that clear somewhere, sorry about that:)

For the FPGA and ASIC Bitcoin miners out there, we'd love to hear what your requirements are for frames. What equipment are you using that you'd like to house in an OpenRigs frame?
I don't think there are any asics that fit in aluminium frames, except for the now obsolete blades
