I've never watched a women's football match, so don't know if there will be an interesting match for this sport, but for men's football it's for sure.

Normally, men's football in the Olympic Games is one of the less prominent sports. The players are not from the main teams, they are usually only under-23.
The female is a little different, having already the main players in the tournament.

Seems to me that maybe basketball is a bit different, right? I remember they used to have the best of the best players at one time but don't know if that changed. Hell even the USA team had stars and that's huge considering the NBA contracts.

some countries will have less participants due to various reasons
Economic reasons can be the main one, especially for poor countries, without a pandemic they are already limited with finances coupled with difficult times it will make it even more difficult for poor countries to get funds to finance their athletes to go to Japan to compete.

we have a good matches of game olympic for football , about six matches this wednesday, 21 july for women , and seven matchs for men those matchs will start next day after matches football of women or 22 july it remain some days for the start of football matches , i am sure that olympic games will be good and everyone will  fun , for who like football specially and for sure who like specifie sports too whatever swimming , athletic and all other sports

After covid cases started spreading fastly in Japan recently, Protest at Olympics emerged in response to contamined foreigner athletes and their delegations arriving in the country. About 200 people gathered in central Tokyo on Sunday to oppose the realization of the olympic games.
Quote
About 200 protesters gathered on Sunday outside Shinjuku station in central Tokyo, waving signs that read “No Olympics.” It was the latest in a series of small protests over the last few months targeting the Games.
Are these people really concerned about the potential infections the event could lead, or is it just another political agenda being pushed to take advantage of the chaos for their own good, like we often see in the western world?

Could the event be cancelled due to the new infections cases increasing and consequently affect the gambling industry?

we can't say the real motive here as we are not in their position. maybe, they are indeed concern about the potential increase in number of infections. however, as there are no more spectators allowed especially in tokyo area, the infections that may arise can be contained within the athletes and organisers only. but i believe, as day goes by, there will be more cases of this infection and it may turn out to be a mess. i just hope the organisers know how to contain it fast. otherwise, this olympics will go down in history as a chaotic one.

Not a Russian myself, nor do I care about any specific Russian athlete, but accusing Russia of systematic doping and not pointing a finger at other countries' systematic doping is just ridiculous. I guess the difference is state manipulated systematic doping versus the state knowing about doping and turning a blind eye. Honestly, it's equally bad.

The point is, these were caught... the others weren't.

Yes it is true that there is doping in other countries, but either it has not been detected yet or what has been caught are individual athletes, without government support or knowledge of the countries' federations.

In the case of Russia, the problem was discovering that the federations were involved in the problem. In other words, it was not the individual athletes but the institutions representing them that were involved.

yeah, you are right on that, it's just the fact that I mentioned, the institutions of other countries turning a blind eye on the athletes doping. It's just frustrating but as a wise man once said, it's not illegal to take drugs, it's illegal to get caught.

There is a reason for not allowing Russian athletes to represent the country, the state sponsored doping violation is the situation and they can compete as independent athletes, you need to accept the fact that the entire athletes were not banned from participating because when the new broke out about state manipulation of test and encouraging people to dope in a systematic manner i thought the entire athletes will be banned but everyone can participate as independent athletes and the only restriction is not to represent the country.

That is EXACTLY what the problem is all about. If a player in a nation ends up doping and then gets caught that nation itself punishes the player, let alone help them, so it is obvious that Russia is a lot different in that situation. Our nation for example have Olympics joining tournament, so whatever your platform is you end up fighting against others to win, and we spend over 50 million dollars for Olympic training in all of our nation, why would we want to send a person who just uses doping to comeback as humiliation? How can they help?

We just lost money and a chance to win "something" or even participating honestly and instead ended up being called a doping winner. Russia on the other hand ends up doping the participants themselves, they literally raise people with doping in order to win some medals, literally government itself does it, how is that any similar?

I particularly don't understand why they are doing these Olympic games even with this new variant, why didn't they postpone it to a date when at least 60% of the population was vaccinated and the virus was under control?

I don't agree. They already postponed it once. There is no point in postponing it further, since the next edition is supposed to take place in 2024. Olympics is the largest sporting event in the globe and it happens only once every four years. If it is postponed or cancelled, tens of thousands of athletes may never get a chance to compete at this level again (for many of the athletes, the peak performance lasts only for 4-5 years). The risk is there, but it is very low. All the athletes and the remaining members of the staff are vaccinated with two doses of the Pfizer vaccine. On top of that, they are not allowing any spectators. Any chance of someone getting infected with COVID at the venue is very low.

With so many matches in the Olympics, of course it will be interesting, but so far I'm only interested in the matches that are exposed in the media or at least become a trend among the public. I just hope that the Olympics will remain safe because we know this pandemic is not over yet so yes, at least this tournament will still be exciting in every match and not only in certain sports.

16 teams are taking part in the men's competition. I don't understand the qualification process. They allowed just two teams from the most powerful confederation (CONMEBOL), while allotted three slots each to the weakest confederations (AFC and CAF). Is there any logic behind this move? It is hugely disappointing that South American teams such as Chile and Colombia could not qualify. On the other hand useless teams such as Saudi Arabia and Egypt made it to the tournament. I expected at least 3 slots for CONMEBOL.

I'm going to use this thread to let off steam, my country's team of athletes doesn't even have minimum requirements to compete with other participants in these olympic games, they are simply traveling to japan to shame us. I don't know how I'm going to be able to see athletes from my country who are in these Olympic games lose in a humiliating way, it's going to be a terrible shame for my whole country.

Well this years olympic games arent anything special...

Is anyone interested in Olympic skateboarding talks? I will be covering that here so if anyone wants to chime in with predictions beforehand, let's do it! Some huge names are gonna show off their skills, but I can't really think of any situation where the US will not dominate.

Four medal events will be held:

Women & Men
Park
Street

to keep this skateboarding thread alive, here is the ruleset.

• Street
This competition is held on a straight ‘street-like’ course featuring stairs, handrails, curbs, benches, walls and slopes. Each skateboarder performs individually and uses each section to demonstrate a range of skills, or ‘tricks’. Judging takes into account factors such as the degree of difficulty of the tricks, height, speed, originality, execution and the composition of moves, in order to award an overall mark.

Skateboarders often ‘slide’ the wooden deck of their skateboards and ‘grind’ the metal trucks (components which connect the wheels and bearings to the deck of the skateboard) directly along the course's curbs and handrails.

When riding along the course and in order to get their skateboards on top of or over the rails and curbs, competitors often perform an ‘ollie’, a trick whereby the rider and board leap into the air without the use of the rider's hands. Skilled skateboarders make this difficult trick appear easy.

The side-on position taken by riders of surfboards and skateboards is known as their ‘stance’. A position with the left leg facing the direction in which the skateboarder wishes to move is known as ‘regular stance’, while some prefer to position their right leg facing the direction in which they wish to move, which is known as ‘goofy foot’. A skateboarder's usual stance is called their ‘main stance’; when changing the position of the front leg during competition, this is known as ‘switch stance’. The marks awarded for tricks performed with the main stance differ from those performed with switch stance, as the degree of difficulty is increased with the latter.

A common trick for skateboarders is to ollie and then flip the deck of the skateboard in various ways under their feet, miraculously bringing the board back to their feet before landing. An added variation to flipping the board is to also rotate the body at the same time. When performed well, after the board is flipped, the skateboarder can make it appear as if the board reattaches to the feet by magnet. Parallel, length-wise and other dynamic, multi-dimensional flips all require a high level of technique.

• Park
Park competitions take place on a hollowed-out course featuring a series of complicated curves — some resembling large dishes and dome-shaped bowls. From the bottom of the cavity, the curved surfaces rise steeply, with the upper part of the incline either vertical or almost vertical. Among the attractions of park competitions are the immense heights achieved by climbing the curves at speed and performing amazing mid-air tricks.

The variety of tricks available to a skateboarder increases with the height gained launching out of the park’s curves. The degree of difficulty can depend on whether the deck of the skateboard is grabbed with a hand when performing mid-air tricks, which part of the deck is grabbed, which hand is used to grab the deck and the posture of the rider while grabbing the deck.

Difficulty and originality also increase if the deck is rotated in mid-air, flipped or if the competitor is able to rotate their body while in mid-air. Other tricks include variations of balancing (stalls), grinds and slide tricks on the ‘lip’ of the ramp.

No God or Kings, only BITCOIN.
Any day a fanatical man who wants to win at all costs, but does not have physical conditions pays to win against other men, has an operation and enters the women's category, to say that he is the winner!
Shame!
I feel you and I'm hoping they still have time to alter that since it hasn't started yet and they have still time to carry on with the scheduling of the games for every athletes. I don't really much know the reason why they agreed about this but if the woman is dominant on that category just because she is dominant and can compete with the guys that doesn't mean she belongs to compete with the men's category. If she dominates the game then let it be, the one who dominates win, it's Olympics.

It is a shame that my country (Russia) will compete without a flag, but I think Russian athletes will win a lot of medals at these Olympics! Russia has always been famous for many good athletes or gymnasts...
I don't know if that was expected for Russia but I say good luck to them as well to all the countries involved in this momentous event.

This is probably going to be first unfair olympics in history of olympic games, some countries are banned, ridiculous rules, probably no public and fans, man competing in woman category, and who knows what else are we going to see...

Why are you saying this, is there any news link that there are countries banned from participating in this Olympics, I really don't know about this.
The above user was right with what he/she said because the orgainzer involved in the olympic are scared of the virus than it capacity and if you following this Olympic game closely you will know that it the most restricted tournament in the history of sport ever since the pandemic issue have happened with no prize or ranking point.

This is the reason why Tennis star like Serena Williams, Murray, Rafael Nadal, Thiem etc pulled out of the tournament.

Who is your favorite athlete who will still go to Olympics in football? I think for the squad even though there is an age limit of 23, they do allow each country to send 3 (if I'm not mistaken) athletes who are overaged, but I don't know if there's a limit for THAT.

Would be so cool to see Messi try and win it again for Argentina;)
Honestly, I don't care much about football in Olympics. Probably I'm going to watch only final of tournament. Until your post I didn't even knew who will play there. Now I checked squads of teams, lot of no names for me, but Spain squad looks impressive.

I guess Olympics isn't for everyone, but I do like seeing all the other sports in between football. Sometimes it's the only chance you get to watch like good badminton and good track events (who doesn't like to see sprinters and jumpers right I do!).

Check out Italian squad too, a lot of EURO veterans might be playing there:) and Copa squads too!

I don't discuss about sports here.

I am worrying about the pandemic and progresses of vaccination globally. I wish best for the world, every nation, includes sport athletics. I wish that there will be no more deadly and more productive spreading mutated viruses on the world.

The Olympics can be a potential source for mutation of the Sars-Cov-2 virus. Of course I do hope it won't happen because if it happens, it will get rid of vaccination progresses so far.

We have witness Euro 2021 and Wimbledon 2021in this month with full crowds in side the stadium. There was currently no big impact of covid-19 cases due to this and therefore, i think that Olympics event will also be played safely.

These are the signs that we are coming back to the normal life after pandemic.
