Quick question, how does a country qualify to play the Olympics? I really want to see my country play but they aren't even participating so I don't exactly get what is the requirements to do be part of Olympics, also who will be carrying the torch this time?
Every National Olympic Committee in every country is responsible for submitting the participating list and you can enroll 3 members for every event and then every Olympic year there will be a standard benchmark you need to meet if you want to get enrolled and for every Olympics these benchmark changes for every event.

I need to check all the athletes participating as i am not following majority of these events after the legend Usain Bolt retired.

I'm just curious how you guys feel about Sha'Carri Richardson being banned or suspended from the Olympics and then ultimately being left off the 4 x 100 sprinter relay team? Personally I fully understand why this happened and rules are rules so it is what it is but I think it's about time that marijuana is removed from the banned substance list.  Marijuana is NOT a performance enhancing drug and is a very helpful and safe way to treat inflammation, stress, pain etc.
International Olympic Committee needs to change this stupid rule as Marijuana is not a performance enhancing drug and in the US many states made it legal and it is time to remove this, enforce this rule during Olympic week but before that they need to give them a break as it is best for recovery and pain.

It's unfortunate timing. She got a tiny ban, due to the fact that whilst marijuana doesn't enhance performance, it's still illegal. It just so happens that the tiny ban covers the period of the olympics 100m. The rules are the rules, and there isn't really any room to manoeuvre, there has to be a ban of some sort. As for her not being in the relay team which comes a bit later and after the end of the ban... I think again they have little choice. They have to be seen as being consistent. It would be difficult to justify including a runner in one event who is banned from the individual version.

It's not a great situation, and it feels harsh on her, but the rules can't be bent... that would set a terrible precedent.

No sympathy for Sha'Carri. Athletes need to take great care while taking food, to make sure that they are not consuming any items containing prohibited substances. Even previously there have been cases of individual athletes getting bans for mistakenly consuming banned substances. And in case of Sha'Carri, she was already aware that weed was banned and still consumed it. Who should be blamed here? It is not possible to provide exemptions on an individual basis. If weed is permitted today, then tomorrow some people may ask for glass and crack.

It gives me some sadness for the athlete, because each human being faces the crisis in different ways, in this case the athlete fell into an eventual hard crisis where she lost her mother, she felt alone, but I would rather have used than to have attempted Against their lives, many cannot bear such pressures and commit suicide, their ban is 1 month, and obviously they miss all the Olympics, this must be hard for any athlete who takes so much time preparing so much.

Olympics-IOC's DeFrantz hails sprinter Richardson for coming clean on cannabis use

Quote
"I have great admiration for the U.S. athlete. She is extraordinary," DeFrantz told Politico here.

“With her integrity she said ‘yes, I did it. Here’s what happened, I was in a terrible position, there was no one there for me, I just learned from a stranger that my biological mother had passed away and so I went to the depths of despair and I did something I should not have.’

I hope she has enough strength to overcome this difficult stage that she had to live, I admire that she told the truth and they did not capture her in a test, maybe what happened is better.

I don't know about drugs so much but I've actually seen myself friends who take weed a lot and well, if there's anything that can be said about it, it's addictive, it makes them perform WAY less than they should, and while they're on it they're happy but without it they're just looking for ways to score more and everything else becomes less important.

Banning it for performance I disagree, but I think coaches would ban it for taking away focus:)

This thread will be so complicated thread since there are too many sports for the Olympics. Should we have a limit for the topic to discuss? Because I think we will have many different sports predictions. How if we have a limit the discussion about the prediction of country's achievement only or about the Olympic in general? So we will have no specific sports prediction here in this thread.
It won't be complicated, and this is the purpose of this thread, to discuss everything related to Olympics regardless of what is our favorite sports. And for sure this thread will be one of the most active as we approach the Olympics games. Well, you can post your sports prediction here and maybe someone will tail you. So everyone would understand and maybe those who are not familiar with a certain sports will definitely pisque his attention is he/she sees a sport that might interest other gamblers/sports lovers in the future.

I don't think it's necessary, because by the time the Olympics are taking place, the discussion will definitely focus more on well-known sports such as football, tennis, boxing, athletics, swimming, basketball, etc.
Maybe Op can add poll which country will get the most medals

There are no particular restrictions for any country to participate in the Olympic games as there are players from more than 200 countries participating in the Olympics but the only reason some countries don't take part in some competitions is that they don't have qualified players who possess that skill like if they don't have swimmers who can compete in that competition so they avoid that sports. The players cannot take part in every sports probably which is the reason for that.

As far as I know, there are no specific requirements that a country has to fulfil in order for its athletes to be allowed to participate in the Olympic Games. It all depends on the individual athlete, as there are certain standards for each sport that have to be achieved in order to qualify as a participant for the Olympic Games. For the 2021 Games, the main criterion for the first time is a world ranking list in which the five best results of an athlete are included and, in addition, the respective results are weighted according to the importance of the event. In addition, there is the qualification through the achievement of the standard as well as quota places. So the whole thing is quite complicated.

It is not practical to set up separate threads to discuss each of the sport, since there are a total of 50 disciplines and 33 sports being offered this time. I think we can discuss both the medal tally and the individual sports in this thread, as setting up separate threads for all these will dilute the discussion. After all, all these topics are related to each other. If the moderators can keep the thread away from the spammers and shit posters, then it will be easy to navigate between the different sports and sub-topics.

what's done is done. she smoked marijuana perfectly knowing the consequences. do I feel bad about her? yeah, she lost her mother so I know how hard it is. do I feel bad about her being suspended? yeah, but, I still agree about the decision made by the Olympic committee.

but I think it's about time that marijuana is removed from the banned substance list.
I doubt it'll happen anytime soon(I might be wrong) since the USA isn't the only country that is part of its committee.

There are increases and outcomes are not assessed fully. The Euro ended a few days ago and you will have to wait about one month to see what will happen in European nations.

The general vaccination progresses in the Europe are better than in many of Asian nations and other parts of the world. The Olympics will be the event for the whole world, so it will bring more risk of infections, spreads and mutations during and after the Olympics.

There is already a spike in some of the cities where the Euro 2021 tournament was conducted (London, St Petersburg.etc). But as you have mentioned, we may need to wait for a couple of weeks to assess the full damage. In UK, they allowed the crowd because of the high levels of vaccination. But they forgot the fact that the vaccines have a low efficacy against the Delta strain, which is now very prevalent in the UK. In the other countries (especially in Russia), the vaccination rates were low, and still they went for the tournament. I hope that the Japanese won't make the same mistake.

The Olympic Games will be a success, of course many things have happened to reach that level, also at some point they wondered if they could actually do the games, in fact COVID-19 has been one of the biggest challenges for the organizers , for the athletes and for the people who will attend, I think that if the Olympic games are successful they will be an example for the world, this article talks about it:

Tokyo Olympic Games: When are they and will they go ahead despite Covid?

Quote
International athletes and support staff will be tested before departure and on arrival in Japan.

UK athletes will be required to stay within their Team GB bubble for at least the first three days in the country. They will be tested every day.

Athletes don't have to be vaccinated, though International Olympic Committee (IOC) officials expect around 80% will be.

Two members of the Ugandan delegation have tested positive in Japan, including boxing coach Patrick Lihanda.

Some areas in Japan are already in the state of emergency especially Tokyo.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-57760883

So no spectators are allowed, which is not a very lively one.
Let us see if they can contain even if no to limited spectators are allowed.
And just be content to watch them on your screen for this time being.
This will be remembered in the Olympics history for being a silent one.
Lots of things have been prepared and delayed in Japan for the Olympics and the career lifespan of athletics is short so I think the Olympics will be hold one way or another like Euro 2020.

Athletics and Japan will feel happy if the Olympics will be hold in the closed stadiums rather than cancel it at all.

Risks are there but Japanese governments and IOC (International Olympic Committee) have to make decisions with as least risk as possible from their assessment.

Dont worry about pandemic. There were alredy IIHC 2021 and Euro football 2020. There spectatora on the stadions and it wasnt announced that number of covid cases increased during these events.

It just turns out that Japan is not satisfied with the level of risk of an increase in morbidity, which is undoubtedly present during such large competitions.

We must understand that no matter what measures are taken, but when there is a movement of such a large number of people across the border, there will undoubtedly be a risk in any case, especially if not only athletes, but also spectators are still allowed. When holding EURO 2020, UEFA insisted on the presence of a certain number of spectators at the stadium and those who did not agree were deprived of the opportunity to hold it. It just turns out that Japan is not satisfied with the level of risk of an increase in morbidity, which is undoubtedly present during such large competitions. And the IOC does not have as much influence on the organizers as UEFA, and therefore we have what we have, that is, potentially holding the Olympics without any spectators at all.

Slava Ukraini!
It will be strange Olympics without spectators, but still better than no Olympics at all. Though, here in Europe it time of events will be not best to watch as most of events will be early in the morning.
Guys, what events will be most interesting for you? For me personally it's athletics, swimming and basketball. And events where athletes from my country have good chances to win medals Cheesy.
About basketball tournament, I expect that USA will not win gold. They have good squad this year, but results in friendly games shows that they're vulnerable. It's only pity that my country will not play in Olympics for the first time ever because we lost to Luka Doncic and his Slovenia in qualifying tournament.
I know that for Athletics events, each event has a qualifying standard. Each country is able to enter up to 3 athletes for each event, provided that they have met the qualifying criterion - for the men's 100m as an example, this is 10.05 seconds. If your country has 10 runners who have met the standard, you can enter your choice of 3 of them. If no-one from your country meets the standard, you are still permitted to enter one participant.
Yeah, countries can send their athletes even if they haven't reached qualifying requirements. I remember in previous Olympics in running or swimming events there were athletes from quite exotic countries and their best times were so far away from qualifying criteria.
