  • Social distancing should not lead to social isolation, so talk to your friends and peers and discuss your gambling problem with them. Having support can make a big difference.
This one is particularly important, as for the past year many people have stayed isolated and, while some may prefer it and even see it as a benefit, for many people, it's been stress they were not prepared for.

It's a common belief, that gambling is triggered by greed and too much excitement over such games, but the reality is that a large portion of gamblers is doing it out of boredom, loneliness, and a sense of isolation. Gambling serves them as entertainment and a distraction from the problems and such people are more likely to become addicted, due to this consolation they seek in gambling.

Even years ago it's been common knowledge, there's an interesting study, which was conducted back in 1998 when people used to gamble with EGM, that shows that among problem gamblers are more likely to experience boredom and loneliness as compared to non-gamblers or non-problematic gamblers.
I'm sorry but I don't think it's specific to gambling, many other activities could be done alone without friends, like video gaming, reading, watching TV, cooking, running, etc so I think it's big bullshit to say that "a large portion of gamblers is doing it out of boredom, loneliness, and a sense of isolation". I don't think this portion is larger than other lonely activities, it's just some anti-gambling propaganda, gamblers mostly gamble to try to earn big money, that's it.

and not many people who are in isolation are gamblers or has the capability to gamble. maybe just one factor for those who are already gamblers even before pandemic. their gambling habits just got worse during this pandemic. but for those that are not gamblers, only few of them went to gambling owed to this situation.

Online gambling is more convenient than traditional gambling for several reasons, but it creates one big problem that many people don't think about. We no longer notice how the money decreases because we don't have it in our hands. We can't see how our our stash depletes because we are only looking at the digits on computer screens. The money loses its value that way. If you have five $10 bills in your pocket, you feel the difference if you are only down to 1 or 2. But the digits on the screen don't feel that important. Whether it's 0, 5, or 20, it's not tangible.

That's interesting; I hadn't considered that. Is this one of the reasons why some countries want to go all-digital with their currencies?

Maybe that's true and the prime reason for countries to keep them high on going completely digital. In my country these days we can see more and more number of online gambling sites and applications promoted through different sources. End of the advertisement they used to say in a faster note, it is subject to financial risk you're responsible for your own. What is the use of mentioning it.

  • When you are tempted to gamble online, use that to motivate you to go for a walk or exercise instead.
  • If you decide to gamble, you should keep a record of how much money and time you spend on gambling daily. Studies show that gamblers lose track of how much time and money they spend on gambling.

I tried these two but it never worked for me I don't know about the others who tried this, I walked thinking that I will forget to gamble, and when I got tired from walking I got home and tried to find something to relax me from that walk, and I ended up gambling because I find it relaxing, and on tracking how much you lose, it's not going to work too, gamblers only think of their winnings and always motivate to gamble again because they believe they can regain their past losses[/list]

Well, it would only be different if you struggle financially during the lockdown, and if you are not a regular gambler.

True that we are more vulnerable now as usually stay at home to prevent from getting infected, therefore it's necessary to understand the risk whatever we do in gambling, but at the end of the day, it still depends per individual on how to manage himself to prevent himself from being addicted, in the first place, we need to be responsible to avoid all problems.
Yes, we're supposed to stay home and go outside only for emergency needs. This way it is possible to break the chain, and this has been proven during the first wave of covid-19. By the time if governments provide with relief fund it'll help them overcome the financial problems during the pandemic. When the government fails people look for ways and lands on gambling. With gambling staying within the limits is really a hard task when you're into it for money making.

These are actually good guidelines to follow for every gambler, regardless of whether or not the gambler is addicted.

Even more importantly, be realistic in your expectations. We already know the great risks of compulsive gambling. And there's another risk that's rarely mentioned: how the compulsion to gamble can warp your perception of reality. There are so many times that I've found myself betting big when I shouldn't have been because I went into it all in, with the idea that I could beat the house. In reality, this rarely happens.

Good guidelines for every gambler? Really? Could you explain us how do you apply such advice then "When you are tempted to gamble online, use that to motivate you to go for a walk or exercise instead"? When do you gamble if you have to go away each time you are tempted to gamble?
That's pure anti-gambling propaganda from losers for other losers IMO

That's one unnoticeable thing in online gambling. You suddenly realize you ran out of balance, and that's because of the things you have mentioned.
Seeing only numbers on your monitor doesn't feel like your holding an actual money denominations like the ones you mentioned, thus lossing in gambling doesn't really feel like a huge loss when you're lossing with an actual cash.

Its just a matter of self discipline and good control when it comes to your mental awareness.
That's it but not everyone can discipline themselves. There has been some stories that they cannot control themselves anymore and they've became severe in gambling.
And that also brings them out to have a worse control in their mental awareness. They're aware that they are on the side which things might go into worse but they cannot help themselves because it's already hard for them to solve it alone. If that times comes, seeking for professional help will do.

One person should learn how to discipline himself to break the chain of gambling addiction. Focusing on other hobbies even during this pandemic would be a big help. Saving instead of spending is necessary to suring this crisis. Let's just be practical and learn how to control ourselves especially in times where we're being tempted to gamble.

For normal people who rely on their income or job to make a living then doing gambling may not be in their option now since they should focus more on the food they need to prepare or savings as some we're losing their job. However things were different those who are  financially unstable are the one's who keep doing gambling even Pandemic as they are testing their fortune and hoping to win, there are many gambling games popping online that entice them thinking they will be able to win somehow.

This is a very common reason why some of those not regular gambler has been stopped for a while while in gambling activity while it is lockdown due to lack of financial support and I even experienced this.

Any time of exposure in public places, there could be a chance that you will I guess expose for possible infecting the coronavirus which is we must avoid.

Overall suggestions of OP were right and if we know those stuff we can possibly avoid being infected and why not we need to go outside when there is only gambling that all you need have. Everything now can do in online as long as you have strong connectivity to the internet.

I think we all have forgotten meditation. If a gambler meditates at least once a day, he will be able to control his mind instead of his mind controlling him while gambling because a small loss is good but losing big to recover the old small loss is stupidity and is caused by greed. Gambler needs a very healthy mind to stop himself of thinking about recovering loss, and do something else while leaving gambling for that day thinking it was not his day.

To leave a bad habit (addiction), a gambler must adopt a good habit in their life.

Nicely put. As bad habits generally provide some sort of benefit to your life, it is hard to simply eliminate them. You need to replace a bad habit with a new one that provides a similar benefit.

The worst thing would be to replace one bad habit with another, equally bad or even worse.

Does any of these methods work for you? How do you keep a rein on your gambling habits?

Thank you FatFork for sharing such valuable information.
Yes, I already use one of these methods to stop myself from giving too much time to gambling. I don't like people's company too much, so I read books online and offline. While pouring knowledge in me, these books are my best friends that stop me from losing control while gambling. I do not gamble often these days and read books in between the sessions I play during weekends. To leave a bad habit (addiction), a gambler must adopt a good habit in their life.
There are lots of things that we could do for us to distract our mind on playing gambling and just like myself i was really tending to deal up with things like playing video games

and doing some physical sports in my backyard like basketball and other things or even just cleaning my house. If you are really serious on not to deal with
gambling because you do seem you would really get addicted then you can really make it if you wanted to.

Its just a matter of self discipline and good control when it comes to your mental awareness.

Finding other mental stimulation to keep your mind busy can be very helpful in suppressing thoughts of gambling. If you need to be online then seek out online activities that help you to overcome the urge to gamble.

I think that is the way that can work for me to distract my mind not to think about gambling because that really helps me so far. I can think and work about the other things so I do not play gambling and I can reduce my time in gambling and of course, that helps me save my money for the other things.

But when you feel tempt and addicted to gambling, you need to tell people around you and ask for help from them so they can directly help you without waiting too long. They can know your problem so they can find out the way to solve the problem. Maybe they will ask you to go to a psychiatrist and asking for a solution.
Its really up to someones discipline when it comes to these kind of sort of things because we do have our own will on how we gonna handle up ourselves on a particular situation.

We are indeed prone on addiction on online gambling since we are most likely been exposed on this specially that we are almost online on a single day.If you are aware on things
then you would eventually find out and tell that risk of addiction is high when you do get involved with it. Its not bad for first few tries or just simply for the
sake of entertainment but if you do already get past beyond that then its an another story.

  • When you are tempted to gamble online, use that to motivate you to go for a walk or exercise instead.
There is another alternative whenever you're tempted to gamble. And that is to play some computer games or by watching videos and movies to spend your time that should be for gambling.

Actually, there are other activities that you can revert your attention if you want to avoid to gamble or you can no longer control yourself and you're looking for some ways to avoid it.

We all know that if anyone is addicted to gambling, he will not like to play games other than gambling. In gambling there is a chance of winning real money which is not available in other PC games. Also some mid-aged gamblers feel shy in playing video games as they say that they are not young to play such childish games.
It's about divertion your attention when you're tempted.

Just because you want to gamble, you really want to gamble and you can't do things aside from gambling. You can still play games and it's for helping yourself to avoid gambling when you're tempted.

No doubt, but the first option has additional benefits. Aside from distracting you from gambling, exercise can improve your health and physical condition.
Researchers have discovered that exercising releases endorphins which improve your mood. This can have a positive effect on gamblers because it makes it easier for them to abstain from gambling.
