I am OK with speed of 1.5.0, but on my Ubuntu rigs (RX 470) stability is OK, but not great comparing with EWBF miner on 1060, albeit on a single card (NVIdia). Nvidia miner is like a rock and 1.5.0 dumps core every 48-72 hr.
Some prior builds were more stable, for example 0.6.0 and 1.3.2.

First you need to extract the GPU BIOS and keep a back up file, I use atiwinflash but its a windows application, dunno in linux.
Then with a BIOS editor, you change straps and save save as name.rom, again the ones I use are windows base and not linux.
Once you are done you need to flash the new modified BIOS into the GPU and reboot.
Make sure you save the original bios tho

The fact that you said "bat file" says it all. The post you quoted is running linux, not Windows. Optiminer even says in his README that the best performance for the RX series is obtained on linux, because the Windows AMD driver doesn't provide some of the extensions he needs to get the best optimization, at this point. Claymore is in the same boat, although he isn't fond of linux, so ...


How do you change straps to 1500? On ubuntu 16.04 with amdgpu 16.50 I am getting 290 S/s with RX480-8G on stock cards.

First you need to extract the GPU BIOS and keep a back up file, I use atiwinflash but its a windows application, dunno in linux.

Just switched over from Claymore's and getting much better performance.  But I saw a mention of fan control in the messages here on Bitcointalk.   Do I need to be worried about my fan speeds or am I ok to just let the fans run where they are?    With Claymore's I never needed to worry about them and it always displayed what they were running at.  I'm running R9 380 Tonga cards on Linux 14.04

Optiminer doesn't touch the fans, so they stay at whatever the fan speed is when it starts. You can use aticonfig or atitweak (what I use) to set fan speed.


So the GPU itself won't increase the fan speed as it gets hotter?   I thought Claymore's fan control was to just override the GPUs control and run the fans faster to cool it more.

Claymore does the active fan control, if you set that option, otherwise it doesn't change it. I set all mine to 100% at boot time and forget about it.

So what would be a max temp a GPU should run?   obviously cooler is better but what should a max be for a card that is continuously mining?

Depends on the GPU model. On Nanos, the card will not allow temps above 84C. If it can't adjust the power level down far enough to keep it at or below 84C, the card will shut down. Generally, you'd like to keep GPUs at 80C or under, although some GPUs, e.g. 290x (I think), can run fine up to 90C - that's how it was designed to run.


I had heard that some cards had a history of starting on fire.  was it a particular card or series?  Just curious what card models they were.

I have ASUS R9 380 Strix and XFX R9 380x cards.  They pretty consistantly run 67-69 degrees and the fans are about 35% (very quiet) so that makes me feel better.  I haven't been pushing them too hard but now with optiminer kicking claymore's ass in hash rate I'm getting a little hungry and going to try taking a card out and putting in windows to undervolt it slightly and then play with overclocking on the linux side.  They are a marginal card for mining but I got a heck of a deal on them and couldn't justify going to 480s at the time.  Going from Claymore's 11.1 to Optiminer's 1.5 I gained about 15-17% which is better but still not great.

Two of my 6xMSI R9 390 rigs work fine with stock .rom and Ubuntu 12.04/Cataalyst 15.12. The third one 6xMSI R9 390 with custom rom (made based on https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/one-way-to-undervolt-r9-300-series-cards-by-bios-mod-1465128) does not work at all on optiminer 1.5(either Ubuntu or Win7. Stops at once after the first card is initiated. Lower intensity does not help) but works fine on Claymore 11.1 and 1.4.

What can be the reason of that? Can you please give any suggestions how to troubleshoot this?

There is not that much change between 1.4 and 1.5 so this surprises me. The number of computations done has been reduced, so it memory is probably stressed more which could interfere with your custom rom tuning.

1.5 miner works only with card with stock rom. I tried to set intensity to 1 for all cards but without success, only one card is working.

It worked, well sort of.
I had to put intensity at 6 instead of 8 and now its hashing properly, but because intensity is lower I mine less then what I do with version 1.4 Sad

I did what you said, I uninstalled the amd 16.50 and put the 16.40.
Still not mining on flypool  with 1.5
If i switch to ver 1.4 works like a charm
Miner starts but the s/s is like 0.5 per card and it all get rejected of course.

Not to discount your problem, but as another data point, I mined on flypool yesterday with v1.5 and all my rigs were running fine, as they usually do. I'm using the SSL port, for what that's worth. Have you tried a lower intensity? If the intensity is too high, you will see erratic behavior. The kernels did change between v1.4 and v1.5, so an intensity setting that worked well on v1.4 may not on v1.5. Just a thought ...

I had to put intensity at 6 instead of 8 and now its hashing properly, but because intensity is lower I mine less then what I do with version 1.4 Sad
