In my thoughts are ethereum, dash and monero for now. Cryptocurrency are volatile. But any investment they are always risks involved.
Safest coin at this time of high uncertainty, its not any where close because what might be the best coin today might turn to scam coin or shitty coin tomorrow. The best is not to invest long term, set your target and guide it jealously except those coin that have been around for a while in which their leaving the space is not likely, then every other coin should be treated same way no matter the amount of hype its currently enoying.
Logic said that inside investment we need to be wise if we can set up our goals and we do ride with such rides I think for long term alts just hold ETH and Waves platform would be one of the best offer coming from such project, we will see this after some years and holding would be very profitable at all. 
i am not looking to make a huge profit, just modest gains and minimal chance of loss. Any altcoins?
Have you heard of AICOIN(XAI). Modest gains minimal losses attracted me to the project in the first place. Under the radar because it not listed on any major exchange. They still have a thread here on the forum. If you have any specific questions.

Before doing investment in altcoin do some time to research which one is good, still the speculation was always there on which altcoin much better to invest for the better future. Then therefore I strongly recommend you the ethereum it has a potential to gained more when you invest here its like bitcoin, ethereum its almost overtaking the price of bitcoin how much more in few years later.

These coins are nearly in the top 50. The safest coins are in the top 50 or 20 in the market. You can trust these coins with your heart because they have all the support from the people because it couldn't get here without the support.

I'll say ETH too. It will make you profit in the long term. A good reason to trust it is that most of the altcoins are based on Ethereum, which gives it a lot of value

Safest altcoin is nocoin. How about don't invest at all and limit yourself due to unable to understand risk. That's the super safest thing to do. Or better yet, put your money on a ponzi scheme since you want high return, "low-risk". Bit-co-neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeect!!!! lmao
At present it does not seems that any coin be risk free to invest in. There is a huge risk that does exists at present due to the huge price movement happening in btc either upwards or downward and could lead to huge gain/loss if invested in the altcoin and specific single altcoin rather than averaging it out by buying some multiple good altcoins.
Risky choice between safeness and profit is our bane. You can put money in ethereum and hope it to double in the next half of year, but at the same time some newcoin with 1000s% ROI will appear. Risk gives good reward, but can take your investment away as well. So don't invest more than you can afford to lose.
I like to trade and also I take part at different projects' bounties (signature and twitter) which seems interesting for me.
To clear something, you should know that there is no altcoin that is safe to invest and you should not be convinced by the people who are trying to sell their favorite altcoins because those are not safe because all of the altcoins have its own risk and you should know that. Do your own research to find the best coin to invest and that is how you will make the best investment.
Etherium is for sure the most safest altcoin to invest. At least because it's 2nd largest cryptocurrency and has huge backup.
my choice has been Monero and is has not failed me yet 
in my opinion is ETH, my estimate of eth in next year will rise rapidly. because of the many eth enthusiasts, and have a technology that can be underestimated

I think safest altcoin is DASH XMR.
ETH does not react at all to the latest news and keeps bbetween 290-330, i think is a good one.

ETH, of course. But in terms of a profitable investment I would recommend you to choose a new, but perspective coin and carefully wait and so you will be able to increase your investments by many times, for sure. Last good ones are OMG, KYC.
Today LTC, ETH, RIPPLE and NEO for the improvements made on the ETHEREUM blockchain seem to me to be the base from which we can bet on riskier projects like Monero for the anonymity it provides or SLR for invest in renewable energy.
