If you are simply looking for the safest investment in cryptocurrency, then I would say bitcoin is the best, but if that's simply an altcoin, then it should be ETH. These won't give you the highest gains though, but looks the safest.

ICO platforms doesn't seem very safe for me in the short-to-medium term with SEC expected to come down on ICOs.
IOTA seems pretty stable. I wouldn't mind if I have to hold it for years.

you can go for ETHER,NEO,RIPPLE.Lets go for first Ether because Ethereum is an open software platform based on blockchain technology that enables developers to build and deploy decentralized applications.Second is NEO because  NEO uses a unique blockchain algorithm that improves upon Ethereum’s model.NEO has made some outstanding progress in both value and market capitalization. And the third one is RIPPLE because Ripple is a very popular network, many banks across the world use it as the basis for their own settlement infrastructure and also their developer team is good.

We all want huge profits and that's quite difficult nowadays.
I would invest in Bitcoin mostly, but since your question is about Altcoins, then i would say look into investing in Ethereum since its stable enough and there are less chances of loss.
It goes without say, you need to do research and look into any coin your investing in.

ETH is the least risky, followed by LTC. Other alts I'd look into are: NEO, Ark, LISK, REQ, Zcash, OmiseGo, Golem and Tezos. But do your research first.

i am not looking to make a huge profit, just modest gains and minimal chance of loss. Any altcoins?
I think if you want to have a safe investment you must go with the long term investment such as those actions with a roadmap.

Ether is a good one for safest investment.
Deep Onion is good too.
But do your own research before investing.
I always look for Ethereum and Waves because investing in these two would probably giving a high chance to earn huge profit. Yes the best thing to do is check first the altcoins to invest in to get rid of losing our funds.

I would definitely recommend OMG.

They are a legit company established since 2013 (so they have experience in the industry) which provides online payment solution already used by thousands of customers and has lots of big strategic partnerships in Japan and Thailand where their current target market is Asia which is a good sign. They are very ambitious looking at their roadmap as their main goal is to build their own blockchain. Year 2018 will be a great year for OMG as there are many milestones to be met such as the white label wallet SDK introducing the programming framework which would lower entry barrier for developers looking into blockchain technology, Proof of stake which gives incentive for token holders (will gain a % of transaction fees on the OMG network), first project to implement PLASMA technology which would greatly improve scability which allows the network to handle high volume transaction at an amazing speed which makes it's network efficiency comparable to VISA.

Check out Propthereum.io. They are an asset backed cryptocurrency on the blockchain and are expecting a 1566% coin appreciation in a short period of time. Proceeds raised from their ICO will be used to purchase A-grade property worldwide that will generate a rental income and underlying value for the PTC token holder. The great thing about this concept is that the coin will always increase in value, lowering the risk. I highly recommend checking out this coin!

Safest would have to be ethereum. Over the last couple months the price has fluctuated between $290 usd to about $350 usd. So looks like it has a solid foundation and I can't see it plummeting to nothing. There are too many erc20 tokens that are built from the ethereum blockchain that would prevent it from dropping too far. As it moves to POS there might be a bit more of a fluctuation but that is still about a year off.

I think ethereum is the safest altcoin. If you see the price before when they started last 2 years ago the price is 0.001 only or less and if you see the price now its 0.05 more thats awesome. I bought ethereum coin when the price is cheap and Im happy because If I sell that today I will earn a lot of profit but I decided to hold it. So its better if you buy ether now if you want a lot of profit. Many projects and partnership are in ether so this coin are very promising.

Plenty of topics here in bitcoin forum may probably help you in choosing an altcoin to invest just do some research. I choose ethereum because so far it’s the best alternative coin. In the past few days ethereum pump and surely it gives high profit to many holder who wait a long time for their investment. Litecoin and dogecoin is also good but it did not pump much maybe in a long run you just have to be patience when waiting for the right time.

I think there's nothing safe in this crazy crypto-world! Almost every coin/token has huge volatility and so you can lose high amount of money investing in it. It's a very risky market.
Yet there are coins which look more stable than others, for example ETH. Also you can look at Minexcoin (https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/minexcoin-a-new-era-of-payments-1847292) since this project has its main goal to have low volatility and gradual growth over the long term.

Diversify between ETH, XMR, and LTC if you want safe

Not sure which of the 3 is the best, I'd pick monero though
