I think it's silly that people get excited because 'Starbucks is accepting Crypto'?
Who cares? The potential of crypto is far beyond buying coffee, and the future and big money won't be coming from people
buying coffee!
There are very interesting blockchain-based projects, that might actually change global industries entirely.
Either crypto succeeds and is adopted everywhere, not one 'brandname' at a time, or it fails.
There's already been cases of companies adopting crypto payments, bitcoin payments specifically, and then removing it.
This is just marketing for Starbucks to a surge of customers.
Adopt crypto, and then every crypto holder suddenly needs a cup of coffee..
what a news, i cant wait especially for the apps. Lets hope it wont just apply in starbucks on the US only. But im pretty sure they will release it for every starbucks around the world, evenless in a country with a large cryptocurrency community. Blockchain now will go spread all around the world guys
Yes it will be worldwide but it's not just Starbucks tons of other brands as well
Check out their site
https://www.zeex.me/Buying gift cards with crypto? I honestly fail to see the importance of this.
If all that came from crypto is
an alternative payment method, then we failed with one of the greatest technological inventions.
LOL so what do you see cryptocurrency as? Maybe 'currency' has a different definition where you come from but as far as I'm aware its a medium of exchange for goods and services. If you are discussing Blockchain then that is a different matter.
You're right about that, but what I'm talking about is how every time some company mentions adopting crypto as a payment method, everyone goes like "wow".
it's just the company gaining media attention, do you think people
wouldn't buy coffee from Starbucks if they
didn't take crypto?
What I'm saying is just that there's too much focus on individual companies adopting crypto, because that's not going to work out long term. Things like this post is basically just giving the company what they want, more media attention. They run a business and they are talking about crypto to get publicity, just as any other company talking about crypto in any way which leads to their stocks going up.
Crypto payments needs to become an important medium, based on aspects such as being
trustless, cheap, fast, global, no central entity and so on, not because it just allows people to buy coffee with money they put in Coinbase, because what difference does it make then? do you want crypto because you can use it to buy coffee or because of
what it stands for?
That's what I'm trying to say. Yes, certainly, there's nothing bad coming from Starbucks adding this, but I think this announcement receives too much focus, considering what it is.
They're doing it because they can possibly get more customers from it, and because it gives them publicity, which you can see in tons of other companies talking about crypto = company valuation goes up.
It's not about having some big companies accept crypto as a payment, there's plenty of mediums and gateways and alternatives that are faster, could be anonymous, could be cheaper (in transaction fees).
Crypto(in this discussion, say Bitcoin) to me is either it's all in or nothing, or do you only see Bitcoin as something you can use to buy coffee with, nothing more? If so, I understand your excitement, but in my book, it's far more than one new currency, if anything, it's the new currency - and the reason for that isn't because of individual companies adding the payment method, the reason is the nature of crypto, which is made possible by the blockchain. What reason do you have to use crypto if you don't do it based on the blockchain? As made clear by this post, crypto is not a popular payment method for companies, since it's big news if a company adds it. So if you only care about getting the end product with some type of currency, there's better alternatives.
To summarize, [company name] adding crypto as a payment method is minor sidegoals in comparison to what we should hope to achieve, and it's not negative, but neither is it something that is worth talking about. They are doing it for their gain, why is that interesting? Do you doubt the potential of crypto, and therefore this is interesting?
Or why would this bring in more people to crypto? Are they going to say, look they accept crypto of which I know nothing, now I'll turn my fiat into crypto so I can buy coffee?
