@thefix Your hardware is entirely adequate. At the moment all that is needed is 1 core and 8GB+ of RAM. The important thing when setting it up is to make sure you: 1) compile for low memory mode, and 2) remove all unnecessary plugins especially account_history. If you don't do that memory usage is much higher.

As far as another account that is a matter of preference. Some people use their regular account. I prefer not to have any of my regular account keys hot (witness needs a hot signing key to sign blocks and most use a feed script to automatically update the STEEM price feed, in which case you need a hot active key as well).

Hmmm, tried to register but it keeps saying my phone number cannot be confirmed...

Try a different phone number or you can PM me. I give free accounts to ranked-up bitcointalk members (without phone number)

Why is steem wallet down on bittrex?  Huh Sad

They are probably updating for the hard fork scheduled for today. If you are running your own wallet/node, you will need to update as well:

https://github.com/steemit/steem/releases/tag/v0.18.1

More info on the feature changes (don't use these updates though, use 0.18.1 instead):

https://github.com/steemit/steem/releases/tag/v0.17.0
https://github.com/steemit/steem/releases/tag/v0.18.0

Do you have any recommendations as far as hardware for setting up a witness. I have a xeon 1231v3 with ssd and 32gb of memory I was looking at using.

It seems to me that creating a second account for the witness would make sense, just curious about your thoughts on that. I am looking for the most current documentation for setting up a witness as it seems I am using older info.

Theoretical physicist Michael Goldhopper wrote this article back in WIRED 1997 issue: https://www.wired.com/1997/12/es-attention/     - STEEM is currency backed by attention.

2 other interesting articles to get your brain going:

The stated premine in the announcement on bitshares forum clearly stated they reserved 80% of the original coins, not all coins, it's far less now, less than 5-10%, unlike most ICOs.  And they are not keeping them, but giving them away as stated and using them to push project forward. https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php?topic=22125.0 To make steem worth something, they actually have to improve it, and they did - e.g. forking away 95% of inflation and power down time, website updates. and you can even make your own interface to the steem blockchain, don't have any need for steemit.com

Steem is also the 2nd most used blockchain after btc, more steem gets more use than all eth apps and currency and all other crypto combined except btc because it's actually useful. It's also fastest crypto in the world by thousand times and higher.

Steem went up almost 30 times before it went down, but people new to crypto probably have no idea that there's more than polo exchange, because they only buy tops after polo adds coins.

Who are these children calling this a scam. It's pathetic, must be those inbred yobit traders or onecoin/ethereum scum who know zero about crypto.

Except that Steem will have other layers of application soon, that will give value to Steem, so the inflation will be overtaken by the demand for the currency.

The price could go up or become stable at a certain level pretty soon.

Well, good luck to you. I'm not interested in Steem now though.

Steem is great ! You can learn a whole lot of knowledge and share your opinion and thoughts and then get paid to do so.
Write up a few good articles and have enough steem to support them and you can stand to make a fair amount. Steem is also alot cheaper then it was when it came out. Early investors lost out unless they went viral. Then again there is more volume so you do need more streem so I guess it evens out.

Not posting this meaning it to be spam just many users are starting to join in on this so i figured it was significant news.

https://steemit.com/powerupchallenge/@thedegensloth/the-one-month-steemit-power-up-challenge

dan's on power down, and in 5 days there will be millions of steem flooding the market. good fucking luck with locking away steem

You are wrong, he has fixed his power down to comply with the agreement ned made with the community. His power down has been greatly reduced. Also just because an individual is powering down does not necessarily mean they will dump it all. A person is free to move their money about as they please on Steemit/STEEM blockchain.
