I dont think replacing those artic cooler fans is going to do anything for preventing those caps or VRMs from burning out. Maybe adding or reorienting case fans may help if those components are overheating (are they?)

HUGE DISCLAIMER  I'm going by pictures posted not my own eyeballs looking at the PCB's personally!

I am just guessing at a possibility, let me repeat, I am just guessing at a possibility.
(^^ this will not prevent a tangent but I tried ^^)

The latest pics show the explosion seems like it happened on a secton of bare PCB right next to a chipcap.
The component looks intact.

How could this happen?

A FEW of the possibilities are:
Loose metal on PCB.
Poor PCB etching. (why would it wait to explode if so?)

Metal contamination could also account for performance issues and failure seen by others.
The explosions might only be happening at locations where there is high current.
The performance issues might be happening in low current locations.

Where could the metal come from?

A problem with the solder paste or application process.
A solder reflow problem. (cold solder joints)
Metal dirt on case leftover from manufacture.
Metal dirt on heatsinks leftover from manufacture.
Self tapping case screws or standoffs might create metal shavings.
A serious mechanical problem with a machine that makes the PCB's.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND ANYONE OPEN THE CASE JUST TO LOOK
But if someone has a unit and already has the case open:
They could use very bright light and a magnifying glass to look.
Move the light to view with different light angles and shadows.
Look at the heatsink and edges of the case for metal shavings.

Up until I saw the last pics I was thinking faulty component issue or a programming quirk overloading good components. Now I'm not so sure. A spark away from components is usually caused by foreign objects.

Did I mention that I am just guessing?
I think I did mention that I am just guessing at a possibility at least once.

No, if you read the news update, they are giving BTC to the hosted customers that were delayed in getting their rigs up and running.  People received their devices on the 3rd / 4th have already made about 4.5 btc (at least thats about what i've made)

Order#12** "in progress" paid June 5th.  Are they giving btc to reg orders?  Meaning non-hosting customers?

Two things I noticed:

1. The miner does not support multiple pools by default, so you have to manually edit the /config/cgminer.conf and add 2-3 extra pools, I also added a line:
"failover-only" : true,

2. The miner does not have cron service installed, they rely on a service "monitordcdc" to frequently check the current for 8 VRMs on each board, if the current is too low they will restart the cgminer process. I'm not sure of the effectiveness of this approach, but my miner has been restarted by this service this morning

I highly appreciate 4 BTC offered by KnC as a compensation for late hosting (not for me - I don't use the hosting). It is very honest and makes customers loyal.
The late shipments (some by 6 days already) should be compensated similarly.

Where did you see them offer that??   I have two hosted day 1 units and have not heard anything except what they said in the news update.   I have received my day 1 shipped unit.   I've asked for a refund on the hosting or what my options were and on Friday they said that I can't get a refund and they are working on resolving the problem, but now we can directly associate loss of bitcoins to the delay especially since I have received my shipped unit prior to the others going online.

Thanks, I was starting at the latest post and moving backward and eventually saw the posting about the news...  If my 2 units get online today and they provide me 8 BTC,  that is fair.   Hope to see the machines running today!

Anyone with day2 shipping seen a sign of their orders in production yet?
And anyone here with confirmed hashing on wallet address given for hosting?

I have a June 4 order, paid June 5, supposed day 2 delivery, but still "paid". Order # in high 800's...

My day 2 order #82 went to "in progress" friday afternoon. called them about an hour ago. they said it would probably be built today, since she could see that my order was pretty high up on the list. and it wasnt in the local pick up batch they got over the weekend.
they started assembling day 2 orders today or yesterday i think.
a couple of guys on the irc channel just got an email about 30 minutes ago, saying they could pick up theirs localy today, they must have been in the weekend batch, not sure if they were day 1 or 2 though.

There are people in 20xx range with status "in progress" - I would start to worry in your case

Those VRMs made loud high pitch sound when first running at 0.9 firmware (and consumes considerably higher power), and after upgrading to new firmware, those sound disappeared. I doubt that those burned boards were running 0.9 firmware

Both burned boards were 0.92.

yeah I can confirm that users that experienced said they where using 0.92 (over kncminer channel @freeenode)
but someone else said that those units could be damaged by having use 0.90 for a few hours / day, it's only speculation thou.

Nice to see bitcointalk back up!
Horrible timing for the downtime.

agreed on both points

Heat rises. For those who plan to keep the lid on, perhaps tilt the end of the miner up 20 degrees and allow the heat to rise and flow out the back more naturually.

Air moves where you push it. It's better to keep the lid for the coordinated airflow.

*If* some thought went into airflow routing.  In this case, the exhaust from the front pair of coolers gets fed directly into the rear pair.  Taking the cover off helps.

so by this theory, saturns should inherently run cooler, right???

60C sounds quite good to me. Most of those VRMs should have no problem operating at 100C and more.

My point is that the asics themselves may be adequately cooled, so upgrading those fans wont help. But the VRMs may be overheating. On 5870 videocards it was also a lot more tricky to keep VRM temps under control than the GPU itself. Pointing a fan on them or gluing some heatsinks on them may help.

ANyway, that is if this is a heat problem, it could be overcurrent too. Can someone with a KNC measure the temperatures of those VRMs? Or carefully feel with your finger?

I touched them by finger, they are hot, more like 60c-70c degree or so, but that is when the case is open and in the room, now case is closed and moved to the outside, should be better at 16c degree outside
