Neptunes are still very much in the preliminary design phase.

a bit smelly to get this information just one day after the last batch sold out..

I hope they don't go for to much perfection with the Neptunes...  This still is an arms race and difficulty

rising exponentially is still a big part of mining.  no..?

bottleneck with controller boards Huh that's the simplest component of the whole miner.  Could you

please explain Orama..?  I'm not sure I'm believing this unless you/KNC can explain with more detail.  KNC have

pulled miracles in the past with bigger volumes and now there's a bottleneck.  I'm sure another PCB

manufacturers that can make it happen if existing manufacturer is busy.

Also. didn't KNC tell us to keep BTC handy for these Jupiters.  What's changed..?  Fear of Neptune refunds..?

by the way they sold out this shouldn't be the case.

Come on, we're all men here.. spill the beans even if some will get upset I'm sure we'll get over it.

I'm guessing the BBB (BeagleBoneBlack) could be a bottleneck.

Cointerra is using them too, and probably many others, because of the 'powerfulness' of a BBB compared to a raspberryPi.

BeagleBone is a US (non-profit)company/foundation, and rPi is from the UK:
Hopefully Cointerra (US company) didn't sign an exclusive deal with BBB, for a certain amount of time/products.

If I don't get more solid information in the next week, I'm refunding my Neptune order. Especially if no new jupiters will be released. So annoying

See folks, as some of us said before.. Q2 is a strong likelihood.. Not next month like some folks were thinking, for some doped-up reason.
And those certain folks took it quite quite badly when it was pointed out how self deluded they were acting. Still, it's Easy2SaySorry  Wink

I now think WELL INTO Q2 is the more realistic date. I was giving knc the benefit of the doubt that they could possibly tape out before the end of January and maybe deliver, at best, April:

KNC Technical Update: As you can tell by our silence, we are presently still working on Neptune chip design. If it all goes well and we manage to finish it by the end of January, we might be able to deliver neptune by April 2014 (Q2). There or there abouts.

If it isn't finished by start of February (i.e. in time for 2 weeks of new year holidays in China), we will not be answering any phonecalls/emails until June 2014. We will, however, be offering Bitcoinorama as a human sacrifice to angry customers. Just no refunds.

But did you read this:

Neptunes are still very much in the preliminary design phase.

What a bombshell! If this is really the situation, (which it must be or else he wouldn't admit it, knowing it will mean people go elsewhere for hardware), then you gotta be realistic and conclude knc are going to deliver knobtune (you know you love it Wink ) more likely in Q2/Q3.

Early December last year I was saying, because knc have 100% success at delivering late, that the Q2 could easily become Q3 i.e. July/August 2014 delivery.

Which started to look silly when they said they were working over Xmas period, which gave the impression they were somewhere close to completing a satisfactory design. But they are today, mid January, still in preliminary design phase? That really is unbelievable.

It's a pretty sneaky tactic from knc - they stay completely silent, give the impression they are making good progress, wait for their product to sell out and then announce they are in the still in preliminary design phase.

I wonder how knc expect people *not* to ask for refunds when they've now spelled out they don't expect to ship until much later than most estimated? I guess they know the first 10k batch is safe, the last 10k batch didn't have a refund option in the sales terms, so they are screwed. So they really only have to worry about the batch of 13k machines in the middle asking for refunds.

Fun times.

-snip overblown waffle-
... The Neptune project whilst adhering to aspects of the aforementioned must focus upon power consumption as it's primary trait if customers (you guys) will be able to compete successfully over a longer period....
-snip overblown waffle-

I won't even mention how much bs this is. To compete successfully over a longer period? Higher hashrate is the only way to achieve that, not power consumption  Cheesy Unless knc realise that knobtune will be mining next to nothing out of the gate and just hope people will be satisfied to mine for 12 months to slowly get a roi? Hmm. That is only valid if the difficulty stops rising, which orama claimed last year and was no where near accurate.

You'll notice that does not say "increasing hashing power". Anyone who dreamed that knobtunes 3TH might turn into 5TH by delivery must now realise that, due to power concerns - not gonna happen. If the primary concern is power consumption, it's probably going to be closer to 3TH than anyone thought.

So the big question is - will anyone make good on knobtunes? You gotta imagine the "customer loyality" 10k rigs are the only option likely to do okay. But that's totally down to knc getting it right first time and not shipping a bunch of lemons, like they did to a lot of us in October. At that time, they were doing something (28nm) that had been done before, just quicker. Now they are doing something not done before, just as quick  Shocked

The only thing for certain - the guys who pre-ordered knobtunes are going to get a few grey hairs this summer Grin

With respect to the speculation above we sold out of Neptune's last night.

Can you post how many Neptunes are sold in all batches? Just trying to calculate PHs when they eventually come online.

If each batch is 1200 would that be about 1.5 billion difficulty added for all 3 shipped is that right?

Yes, that's about right, (in THs):
https://www.google.rs/search?q=1200+*+3+*+3

10,800 THs = 1,508,742,620 difficulty. That's in case each Neptune is 3 THs, add expected overclocking %.

Edit:
Waiting for Bitcoinorama confirmation there are 3 X 1200 Neptunes sold.
So if they were to ship:

$10k 1200 start of may
$13k 1200 end of may
$10k 1200 batch 2 - june
1200 every month till dec 2014

If they were to ship a batch every month like cointerra plan on doing we would have just the neptunes adding roughly 4.5 billion difficulty by end of 2014. Each batch upping difficulty by 500 million?. wow

edit:
Please note those numbers are extreme speculation don't base any purchases or refunds or any decision on anything I say Cheesy

Has the latest batch of Neptunes sold out yet?

Go to the Knc website, enter 1000 miners in your cart, and it will tell you how many are left (228 right now).

Neptune sales have definitely slowed down, and unless Knc releases some really good Neptune development news or the price of BTC goes up significantly, I doubt they will sell many more for a while.

10k is a lot to pay to be at the end of the Neptune line.

What will be truly insane is the price that people on e-Bay will pay for them when they roll out.

Why would they pay a premium? Because when Jups were released the bitcoin price shot up to a grand? Not gonna happen this time, people can buy them from KNC still...why wouldn't they if they want one?
Different game this time round. Probably why they haven't sold out.

Anyone worked the running cost of a Nep out yet, given rough figures ? About 300 quid a month here if it's 2.5kw, or a BTC for 3 months mining roughly. I hope they get them out quick to those who are waiting.

Well, it would certainly be *nice* if the price shot up to $10k by the time the Neptunes come out Smiley

...but please tell me you will at least have room in the case for standard ATX power supplies.  The tangle of wires on the outside of the machine is really quite ridiculous.  It was understandable on the Jupiters due to the time constraints but there is really no excuse for it on the Neptunes.

Perhaps, but the reduced footprint brought shipping costs down significantly. I'll pass the concern on though.

If you are going to pass that please pass on also the opposite concern. I am baffled to see people with the most ridiculous aesthetic concerns here, dangerous concerns detrimental to performance. I'm quite positive the vast majority of KNC customers, usuals and new, are very happy with external PSU's that don't increase design time,  heat at the case nor the risk of damage while in transit.

Thank you for all the updates and also looking forward for an official tape out announcement.

Thanks for the update,

Will Jupiters or Upgrade modules be available soon?

I believe it's more likely to be upgrade module, there appears to be a bottleneck on acquiring controller boards.

Man what a downer. I have about 20btc stashed away to order more jupiters, held off on ordering 2 more neptunes. Seems like the gamble to wait for jups didnt pay off. Oohh well

I saved money to order more Jupiters, but now i'm sorry i didn't ordered one Neptune. QQ!
