I understand this is by bitcointalk member for bitcointalk. However, for longetivity for my images I'd likely stick to imgur, it ought to have less dependency on single point of failure.
I don't think you understand. The original post was specifically addressing the use of image hosting services for the Bitcointalk. Although Imgur is a well-known image hosting platform, it still entails relying on a single point of failure. How can you ensure the longevity of your images on their service?
Well, because it's popular, been online since years and is not managed by a single individual, this is what I meant by single point of failure. joker_josue manages TalkImg, what about site if something happens to him?
I think, joker just does what he loves and offers his service for free, he has also proven that he has taken care of similar service for more than a ten years. Personally, I support him and I'll use his service in future. By the way, you are right also, if you don't feel safe, don't use it. To my mind, some people here are extremely supportive towards something sometimes but I think that we don't need to discuss whether use joker's service or not, he offers it for free, has proven experience and its just personally up to you whether you want to use his free service or not.
I wouldn't mind making regular backups (rsync) of the data. Ideally, a few people should do that, and if joker_josue ever loses interest, the data could be restored on talkimg2.com. All we'd have to do is kindly ask theymos to replace the domain in the forum database and the images are back.
Great idea. Are you going to connect your VPS via FTP and download that way via 10gbit speed?
