Trofo, Medvedev straight set victory in the end haha so ouch for pairing that with the Thiem upset! No problems though, I actually still have a Djoko outright so maybe I won't end up being so disappointed.

Just catching up with the Osaka news too. Pretty disheartening to read about, though to be honest, I always thought media were a lot nicer to tennis people than other sports.

It's sad that Naomi Osaka has withdrawn from the tournament. I understand that attending press conferences is a part of the job, but the authorities haven't handled this at all well. Their initial response was aggressive and heavy-handed, where they all banded together to issue a statement saying that for players who don't attend, fines would escalate and they might even be kicked out of tournaments.

... and their response to Osaka pulling out was so ridiculous, the guy read from a prepared statement, and then refused to take any questions from the press! That really is a perfect way to utterly undermine your own argument.

Federer have a good start and begin with a break, i also don't think Federer can beat Djokovic.

For the next round Federer will meet Cilic, Cilic only won once when he became the US Open champion, but because this is Clay Federer does not seem to be able to beat Cilic easily, maybe just the opposite.

In my opinion, the advantage should lie with Federer, in the first game in a long time Federer convinced even if the opponent wasn't so strong. I think Federer and Cilic have never played against and there are no empirical values?

Today, Nadal and Djokovic's plays to move into the second round.

Fair play to Musetti, beating Goffin in straight sets. I liked him the first time I saw him play, he is a top 5 player in the making - potentially even higher than that.

Italy has 2 amazing talents in him and Sinner, if they remain healthy and focused they can dominate the next decade of tennis. Italy won only 1 Davis Cup, this might be their time. They have Berrettini as well.

_____________________

Regarding Čilić - I would not say his chances are low. Federer is 39 years old, he's still technically great but he might struggle physically. H2H is 9-1 to Federer though.

I just heard that Osaka has pulled out of the tournament, what to you all think of her
decisions to not participate in post match interviews?

Personally I think every player should have the choice of whether to do it or not.

She was struggling to get out from depression and she was brave enough to reveal the health mental she was dealing with, so this decision was the right decision rather than having to listen to journalists' questions which could actually damage her mentally.

Jannik Sinner did have a hard time against and needed 5 sets to dispose P. H. Herbert.

Disappointed on Sonego though, my parlay got destroyed with him not winning and worst losing in 3 sets again Harris.

Federer easy 3 sets win and Medvedev as well. Nadal is playing tomorrow, I reckon it will also be a 3 set win.
Jannik Sinner had a lot of problems in this match Herbert was pretty much pumped because he was playing at home and in one of the biggest tournaments.
For me its not suprising that Sonego lost Harris has moments when he plays good.Federer was really easy was playing with Istomin today.Nadal will probobly destroy his opponent

Same here, did not have a clear high stake bet but made a couple of multi bets and lost most of them. I thought Sinner will destroy Herbert, expected big problems for Medvedev, expected Korda and Sonego wins... Only Musseti, Monteiro and Cirstea matches went how I envisioned them.

I'm waiting for Federer's game today, but he's definitely not a favorite for the title. Tomorrow Nadal and Djokovic will play the first round, assume that the two will win easily and probably one of the two will win the tournament, even if there will probably be no final between the two, they will meet in the semifinals at the latest?

yeah, winner will be probably resolved in the semi-final between the two
Federer is out, he cannot beat Djokovic in quarter-final, if somehow manage to get there, which I clearly doubt

Nadal should be favorite, but he is also far from superb form as well, but should be able to reach semi-final with Djokovic (he has Sinner and Rublev on his way to Djokovic)

whoever comes into final from the lower draw part will be beaten in the final, maybe they will take set or two, but hardly can win over (my pick is on Tsitsipas to reach it)

Well Tsitsipas would be the strongest on that side of the draw so it would be expected
for him to reach the final. To win it presumably against Nadal, I would give him a chance.
There is a lot of tennis to be played.

Some very tough matches for seeds as Zverev and Nishikori struggled to win their matches but managed to step over the line. Thiem, who is considered a future French open champion(once Nadal retires)..turns out, he's not even getting past round 1. Such a disappointment and congrats to Andujar for showing the door to 4th seed in the tournament, which was the biggest upset of the day. Andujar is clay specialist but so is Thiem.

In contrast to Thiem, Zverev has improved after the first two sets, with the many inherent mistakes Thiem lost his game and after he lost the 4th set I no longer believed that he could still turn the last set, Thiem is in this year not in his best form and hope he comes out of the depth of form.

I'm really surprised that Thiem dropped out of the tournament so early.
The last few years Thiem has been the closest to stopping Nadal’s magnificent winning streak in this tournament and I thought this could finally be his year.
I don't think Djokovic can beat Nadal in Paris and we will see Nadal's new title here again and Djokovic will probably fight back at Wimbledon.
The race for the greatest tennis player of all time continues  Grin

It surprised me too, but Thiem hasn't found his form this year and hasn't played well in the last few games either. With a normal course without injuries, the victory should go back over Nadal in Paris.

Federer, Nadal, Djokovic next, we will see how this top seed will do.

I predict that Djokovic will win fairly easily, then keep winning easily until he comes up against someone good - probably Nadal.
At that point he will start losing some points, then when it looks like the match is getting away from him, he'll suffer an "injury" that will disrupt the flow, and allow him time to regroup. He'll then start playing better, immediately moving without any restrictions, almost as if the "injury" wasn't real at all... not that he's ever done this before of course... Cheesy

Easy call for the Thiem upset, Andujar also upset Federer right? and couple with that Thiem's injury and it seems he haven't recovered from it.

Federer, Nadal, Djokovic next, we will see how this top seed will do.

Watch out for Schwartzman, he might fold early as well,  Grin. Another player that I love to bet against with specially if he is the favourite.

Lot of good players in this tournament that can really pull some surprises early.

As for Thiem, wasn't expected for him to exit this early, but we all know how poor he has been showing lately, so good call by @ Trofo. I haven't put any bet yet, but I'm going to parlay, which I think will be the best option are there are a lot of matches.

Finally RG started and I am looking forward to watching some good tennis. Unfortunately not many interesting matches in first rounds as usual.

My pick of the day is Andujar +9.5 against Thiem @1.6. I believe this is almost free money since Andujar is solid clay player and granted he lost last 3 matches against Thiem but they were always with max one break per set. That means this handicap should be good bet even with Thiem in form and we all know he is far away from his best performances. I am expecting Thiem to win in the end but I would not be surprised if he loses a set or even two.

Edit: Match going exactly like predicted. Love when first bet of the tournament turns out well since it often sets the tone for whole thing, at least for me. Now I just hope nobody forfeits this one and voids my already won bet  Grin Even paid for Eurosport player this morning so I can watch all the matches I want and not be dependent on TV provider choice.
Very nice pick indeed, I managed to bet on Andujar @12.5 during the first sets but only because I thought there was some value in those odds, I didn't really expect it could win actually. So it has been a pretty nice surprise at the end.

Yes, it's kinda boring, what Nadal is still dominant as far as clay surface, and no one can even gets closer to his performance, not even the young generations, and it will be very hard to topple his record in clay.
I will consider Swiatek the favourite, she is the defending champion after all, and she is improving a lot since she last won. Osaka hasn't had a good performance, so I will bet against her as the game progresses specially if she is up against Paula Badosa in round of 16.
I just check, Barty and Swiatek are in the same bracket, so we won't see them in the finals.
On the one hand, it is boring, on the other hand, it is impossible not to watch with admiration how one undoubtedly brilliant player turned one type of coverage into almost personal and took one Grand Slam tournament into personal ownership for a decade and a half. No wonder the organizers of Roland Garros put up a monument to him and I sincerely hope that Rafa will not be proud of this and turn an unlucky 13 into 14 and surpass the number of Grand Slam titles no less than the great Federer Wink As for the women's part of the tournament, I personally find it difficult to single out anyone simply because of the fact that when a seemingly clear favorite loses his almost won match purely due to female psychology. The only thing I hope I'm more or less sure of is that Serena Williams is unlikely to win the singles tournament.
