It's over now, Hugo Gaston, won in the final set 6-0. Wawrinka lost steam, the game was suspended though in the third set at 2-2.
The last French man standing, now it will be Thiem vs Gaston. But with the way Thiem is playing I will not be surprised if he will stop Gaston in the next round.

I'd expect Thiem to win fairly comfortably. This was a huge win for Gaston, but often when a player achieves this sort of triumph, they find it difficult to sustain the same level in the following match. He may be the home favourite, but Thiem is one of the tournament favourites and should have a straightforward victory.

Did not watch Gaston yesterday but I sort of suspect that Wawrinka gifted a lot to him based on a lot if history with watching Wawrinka play. If somebody actually watched the match I would appreciate an objective review.

I watched Thiem against Ruud and he played unbelievably good. If he repeats that performance Gaston can have a home advantage but he will not take 6 games in the whole match let alone in one set Smiley

Edit: Of course Theim won 3:0 and I am not even that mad since Ruud played OK but Thiem was out of this world. He hit every single one of those low percentage shots when you are on the defense and can't run no more so you hit the ball as hard as you can and try to score winner. He also had luck on his side, every single ball that was near to the line managed to clip the line, quite unbelievable. If he manages to keep this level of tennis he is wining RG for sure.

and Wawrinka started well with Gaston, so the two will meet in the next round, which will be more than interesting to watch
do not know is Stan able to win over Thiem, but he can take one set for sure, and he has experience winning RG, with these three top players, at their top form, he was able to pull three different GS, and could take down Thiem this year as well, but set should be certain

edit: will put money on Cecchinato handicap this afternoon, probably on -5.5, Zverev did not play some good tennis until now
Be careful, the small left-handed Hugo Gaston(1m72, 67kg) won the second set 6-3 (vs Wawrinka)!
And now they are tied 2-2 in the third set...

It is actually an amazing result that Hugo Gaston has achieved in this tournament so far.
Absolutely no one seriously counted on him before the tournament and his ranking is very weak.
I wouldn’t say he has no chance against Thiem because he can play freely, without any pressure, unlike Thiem.

Ruud vs Thiem, this will be interesting match, I would say a highly contested one.

Sure hope so, I just played that Ruud is taking at least on set @2.0. That odds seem like an immense value for me and if this was played before RG I would be 100% sure it will come. However, Thiem has been excellent in RG so far while Ruud had a very strange match against Paul and that is probably the reason for odds like this.

Wawrinka also looked very good so far and I am thinking conditions in RG are favoring him and Thiem this year. RG is playing a lot later in the year, weather is colder and wetter, the balls are heavier and they are bouncing less. Even Nadal complained about it a bit which is understandable since big part of his clay game is top spin and high bounces. Could be more surprising results.

Thiem is in great shape but I still think that Nadal will win it again. I watched his match against McDonald and it was good old Nadal. If Thiem manages to win this year, than it is maybe the beginning of the end of the big 3?

If Wawvrinka manages to win against Gaston (he already won the 1st set), than we have a match to look forward at (against Thiem). Wawrinka has had a couple of difficult years due to injuries, but he sees to be in top shape again this year.

Lol, what a drama with the match of Bertens vs Errani, always fun to see  Grin. But I didn't think Bertens was faking anything.
See the video of how Bertens cried at the end of the match and screamed when her leg was lifted by the official, it is quite doubtful for her to play in the 3rd round.
I watched Tsitsipas match againts Cuevas, this time He playing well.
Today's match Ruud vs Thiem, Ruud a good player but Thiem still showed good stats in the previous two matches in RG.

I'll be interested to see how Stefanos Tsitsipas goes in his next match after that five set comeback from going down 2 sets to 0. He showed a lot of fight in that match and now I just hope he can go on with it. Zverev had a tough match and I just wonder how much this will take out of him as there hasn't been much break from the US Open final to the start of the French Open and I'm sure he and Thiem don't want to be having long matches like we just saw with Zverev.

Yep, we will have to see if already adjusted to the surface after that grueling five setter comeback, or if that match takes a physical toll on him. As much as possible, it should just be 3 setter to preserved their energy as the match gets tougher. On women side, Gauff is already out,.

And this, Sara Errani has serving meltdown, loses, shouts ‘f*** ***’, meanwhile Kiki Bertens leaves court in wheelchair.

Easy win for Tsitsipas, he won in 3 sets ( 6-1; 6-4; 6-2). His next opponent will be Bedene.

Yeah he sure did and to be honest that's what he should be doing coming up against un-seeded players but as we have seen in recent times Tsitsipas can sometimes struggle against lower ranked players so it was good to see him get a easy win and it looks like he is adjusting to the clay surface which doesn't really suite him but we'll see how far he can go.

Good, I thought that I will wake up seeing my boy Tsitsipas on the short end again. I agree with you mate, Tsitsipas should "exploit" his weak opponent and should be winning easily as to not used more energy and preserved it for the next tough matches if ever he reach the QF this year.

@Bertens - I agree as well, Bertens is really on a lot of pain, she will be facing Siniaková so I do hope she's fine and can continue to move on. Halep vs Anisimova, I think Halep can win this easy in 2 sets.

Ruud vs Thiem, this will be interesting match, I would say a highly contested one.

Watched almost a whole match between Ruud and Paul Tommy today and I must admit there was some good tennis played in this one but always just from one player. One of the strangest matches I ever watched, it ended with 6:1, 1:6, 6:3, 1:6, 6:3 for Ruud (bold). I am specifically targeting these players I see as "surprise winners" for hopes to cash in on some nice handicaps in the later stages of the tournament but so far the matches I have seen did not gave me much confidence.

I watched Tsitsi, Rublev and now Ruud all great clay players which could end up far in the tournamnet and all of them lost 2 sets in the match. I am expecting more from them, especially from Rublev who played some extraordinary tennis in Hamburg.

yeah, did not watch Ruud, but seems that he could pass easier, and with Thiem will be different story
no matter that, Thiem will probably pass-by Ruud, but i would be glad to see Wawrinka to face Thiem in the round after that one, IMO, it would be a great match to watch, and i would not count-out Wawrinka on that one, he played well today, had a two down-times in first and third set, but i could say that he routinely kicked-out Koepfer, that is actually in good form at the moment, having chop-out set from Djokovic, Agut, now Wawrinka and passed few rounds on all three tournaments before that
I agree with you Wawrinka against Thiem for the 4th round will be the main event of this open, unfortunately we'll have to wait till the next week (monday or tuesday) to watch that... Well if they beat Gaston and Ruud ofc

Serena Williams advance to second round, She only had a tough match in the first set against Ahn.

I am starting to think that she won't win another slam. She has stumbled quite a few times in the later stages of finals recently, and she is also showing uncharacteristic vulnerabilities as in the first round here. The second set was easy, but the first really was not. I think the problem is mainly mental, but obviously with each tournament the physical side becomes harder as she nears retirement.
Your analysis was right Cnut237.
Serena Williams just gave up this morning due to an injury to the achilles tendon according to her words.
Yes, weird timing. Perhaps she read my post and decided she needed to withdraw from the tournament Cheesy

That's right the odds are not fixed and the pool is shared for all bettors who placed a bet on Nadal. I believe early bettors earn more percentage of the pool but its not as much as to placing a fixed bet with one of the sportsbooks. I think the only danger to Nadal not winning is Djokovic and Thiem, I do have a small bet on Thiem like I do every year on the French Open.

Odds are indeed not fixed, but you get indeed a time weight multiplier, which makes it interesting. I just checked and the odds for Nadal to win are now @4.6. Just crazy!
Okay, the odd will probably drop a bit, but keep in mind that these bets will be closed before the quarter finals.
