Hungarian Open already on it's way and Cilic chooses to enter as wild card but he is rank number 1 in the tournament. What do you guys think? Will it bring good outcome as lately he has been struggling and is out of the top ten already. For me it looks like he is looking at this tournament he rally gauge his physically and see if he can still continue or need to take a break. Or maybe take this opportunity to bring his form back. He is already through to he next round of 16 and will be facing Cuevas.
Cilic has only played 9 official matches this year and he has a negative record of 5-4. I don't know what to say about his form coming into this tournament since he's been in a poor form the whole year. He is facing Cuevas and I don't thi k he will have an easy match here especially because Cuevas won a tournament last week even though it was only a challenger but this will motivate him and it seems like he doing well on clay surfaces lately. Will be interesting to see what happens.

The only reason why I can see Cilic entering this tournament is that he most likely needs match fitness to get himself match fit for the French Open. Hopefully he does well but as we have seen, he has been in poor form so far this year. This could be his best chance to find some form and win this tournament before the French Open so lets see how he goes.

Yes, this is also what I thought. I read reports that he is somewhat nursing some injury that's why his form is very poor to say the least this year, but entering this tournament will probably give him some confidence. He is currently playing Cuevas, and it was a tough battle, winning the first set 7-5 and leading the second 5-4 with Cuevas serving. Coric on the other hand already won his match in 3 sets against Haase, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, he is the second rank in this tournament.

Hmm I guess Cilic still isn't fit as he ended up losing the match against Cuevas. I'm not sure if he will be right to go for the French Open which is a shame as he is a great player and we always like to see the great players playing in Grand Slam tournaments.

Potentially the last match between Nadal v Ferrer today Sad Feels sad to realise we won't be able to see Ferrer in near future on court.  His athleticism has always inspired me .
As far as todays match is concerned I guess Nadal will win in straight sets.

Cilic has those form swings throughout his whole career. He will probably get his clay form going in time for RG but I am not expecting big results from him in tournaments leading to RG. That being said he always can rely on his serve and solid ground strokes to win against lower ranked players so he could do well in Budapest.

Fognini is one of those players where talent was never in question but his work rate and mind certainly were. He is actually one of the players which will get better and better as they age simply because with age comes wisdom/maturity. His marriage to Flavia Penetta probably helped as well, she managed to win RG and probably nobody would call her a very talented or top player. She certanly had some advice to give him on the topic of maximizing his playing potential.

Yeah, I totally forgot that he married another Italian tennis player, Penetta. Good double players during her prime and I'm sure Fabio having a family did something good for him. Fognini was not shy, attacking umpires, and had several meltdowns in the court himself, he also had some bad things to say about the young generations of players specially when organizers gives them preferential treatment. Anyways, that is past already and we do hope he already change and be another name in the clay tournament.

It's official, Fognini won beating Lajovic 6-3,6-4.  It was his first Masters title and this win put into in to the top 12. I think he was the first Italian to win in years. Lajovic didn't do bad but he was outclass and even though Fognini needed  a medical timeout after the fifth game of the second set, it didn't deter him from winning. Congrats to Fognini!!!
I think it was almost impossible for Fognini to lose the final after what he done to Nadal in the last match. His level of confidence was very high and his shots were just falling every time in the right places. Ive seen this kind of scenarios in the past where inferior players have a great week and their level of playing is just to high for anyone to beat them.
I think it happened to Stefanos Tsitsipas, when he beat a lot of top 10 players leading to a tournament victory if I'm not mistaken. It was a dream come true for Fognini after defeating the greatest clay court player, he know has won a masters trophy. So let's see if he can continue to win another clay court tournament this year.

Yes its been a great all round performance by Fognini in this tournament and he looks in good form ready for the French Open which starts in just over a month from now. If he can maintain this form in the next tournaments then he can be a real chance to win this years French Open.
The sad thing is that we've seen this scenario before where a player has a great performance and wins a tournament beating some of the best players but after that he gets back to his old form. Fognini is definitely one of the best in the world but the inconsistency during the season is stopping him from maintaining himself as a top 10 player. Let's see what he does at the next tournaments

Let's give him the benefit of the doubt for now. He just won a big tournament and betting Nadal, so he is probably enjoying it right now with his family. I agree that there are players who suddenly fell off the radar after winning a trophy, other's say they are giant killers. But I think it's more on a mentality though if they succumb to the pressures of winning again. Classic example is Naomi Osaka now, it seems she started this year very bad and can't even past QF if I'm not mistaken. As for Fognini, let's see how he does in French, this is the biggest stage and a big test for him psychologically.

I do agree with you and I also agree with MakeMoneyBtc because as we saw around the same time last year with Thiem when he beat Nadal in a tournament final on clay. We thought that this could be the start of something and it almost did as Thiem made the French Open final but it looked like the pressure got too much for him as Nadal won easy. Until we see this change in GS tournaments, I won't be getting my hopes up on Fognini but lets hope he can continue on with this good form he is in.

Fognini won it in straight sets as well. I think he was riding high from yesterdays win and probably got much confidence in beating the king of clay and so it dribbled into this match.
It was about time he won a finals because as I said before he beat nadal twice before in the past year. Smiley

Nadal's reign at the Monte Carlo Masters comes to an end with Fognini winning in straight sets. Nadal has been so dominate at this lead up tournament to the French Open but maybe it is time for a change for once and I'm hoping we see another player win the French Open this year. Fognini should win the Monte Carlo Masters as he is in top form but I wouldn't be betting on it as we could see an upset win from Lajovic.

No joke. Nadal lost the first set to fognini and looks like he is going to lose the game the way he is playing right now. Undecided
Fognini beat him before in another tournament so it looks like he will be beating him again to take him out of monte carlo this year. Embarrassed
