Wow. Nadal won in a thriller. They fought for almost 5 hours and won 7-6 (7-5) in the final set. Nadal started slow, quite unexpected of him,  but bounce back later and it was not easy, he was almost upset by Thiem here. But as tennis fans, we appreciate this kind of epic battle and sportsmanship at the end. Nadal vs del Potro next for the semis.

We can see that Thiem is going to be a great player in the near future and start to see him winning Grand Slam tournaments. Credit goes to Nadal fighting back from 0-6 in the 1st set to come out as the winner. Nadal is mentally tough which is why he is so hard to beat, the only guy that can match it with Nadal in this is Djokovic. I was close to a nice payday with Thiem but its all good as he did try his hardest last night.

Nishikori is through to the semi-finals after beating Cilic in 5 sets, Nishikori could be the dark horse as we know he does play well at the Us Open.

And down goes my dark horse which is Cilic. Anyways Nishikori is no push over as well, its just that he also endured some injuries this year that's why his name is not in the contention. But winning a Cilic will be a big motivation and could be the dark horse to pull some upsets leading to the finals.

I always knew this would be a difficult match for both of them given the weather conditions, and the way we saw Roger exiting the tournament says a lot. I'll agree Nadal did had a slow start which got me concerned, but the way he fought back was marvellous.

These are the kind of matches that make you fall in love with this sport, I didn't realise where time flew but it was worth it. There was always an added incentive for Nadal, to beat Thiem as he was seeking revenge for the earlier defeat he had suffered at Theim hands.

I'm now waiting for the semi final showdown and my money is on Nadal winning it, I'm pretty sure he'll lift the cup if he continues to give performance like these.

It just shows how mentality tough Rafa 0-6 first set? That's unheard of. He is a fast starting, perhaps he just give up that first though and then focus on the succeeding sets. Yes, I would have to agree that its not easy and maybe the breaks in this game went on his way on the final set. But still, a win is a win. And I'm sure that Nadal vs Del Potro will be another fun games to watch.

The Nadal/Thiem match has been amazing so far and is going right down to the wire. Nadal has fought back well after going down in the 1st set 0-6 to win the next 2 sets. Then Thiem fought back to win the 4th set and take it into the 5th set where both Men are fighting it out for the win. I thought Nadal had Thiem in this set when it was 5-5 and Nadal was up 0-40 on Thiem's serve but he fought back to win the set. I'm hoping Thiem can come out on top.

Oh well, Just like what I have previously said, this heat will be affecting players and we can see upsets. Its just sad that Roger fell victim to the hot and humid weather and he was unable to overcome it and lost 55th-ranked John Millman at the U.S. Open. We have lost the chance to see Federer vs Djokovich again, anyways, Djovorich will remain the favorite now that Roger is out. Hope to see Nadal vs Djokovich in the Finals.

Yeah we saw what it was doing to Federer and a lot of people are saying that this is one of the biggest upsets of all time but I don't agree because we know now that Federer is getting older and will struggle in humid and hot conditions. It does takeits toll on the older players like Federer, its a shame that we won't see Federer and Djokovic play off once again. I'm more interested in tonight's match between Nadal and Thiem as like you all know I have a bet on Thiem to win the Us Open. Del Potro is also looking good and could be the main danger to Nadal and Djokovic.

US Open, ah. We haven't reached the big finals but we already see my favourite Fedex go out in a shock defeat to someone I'd actually never heard of... but of course we all live to experience these moments so let's see how the Aussie fares in the QF against my other favourite. Definitely worth his spot, to claw back from 2 sets down. 37 years old. You're still a legend, Fedex.

Djoko should make short work of Millman though...

In other not-so-shocking news, Sharapova's out in the QFs again. Her era ended a while ago though.

I know Djokovic wasn't playing anyone high ranking however he does look in fine form and will be hard to beat. If Federer wins later tonight, then the two must face off in the quarter finals, right now both players are playing some great tennis so I think it will be an epic match. Cilic won in straight sets, Goffin was no match for him and now he must face Nishikori in the quarter finals, another match that will be great to see. Its good to see all the top seeds on the Men's side make it through to the quarter finals as the matches are more interesting to watch.

Kyrgios was simply outclassed today, Federer put on a show that even Kyrgios was impressed with. Federer played the shot of the tournament so far which Kyrgios was shocked and his reaction was OMG!.

I thought that the match will be close, at least a 4 set header because I'm assuming that there will be drama because of the previous umpire incident and Federer criticizing it. I agree, Federer put on a clinic and nothing Kyrgios can do.

Alexander Zverev is having a tough match against Philipp Kohlschreiber down 2-1, Kohlschreiber is looking the goods right now to win the match. Djokovic is up against Gasquet who isn't easy when in form.

Philipp Kohlschreiber overcome Zverev, 6-7 (1-7) 6-4 6-1 6-3. Zverev made a lot of unforced efforts, so another top seed falls.

Yeah I was thinking that the match would also be a lot closer between Kyrgios and Federer but Federer was just too good on the day.

Its been a great day so far with Nadal and Thiem going through to the quarter-finals where the two must play each other. For me I'm going for Thiem to win because I got a bet on him to win the US open before it started at good odds. It will be a great match and this time can Thiem turn the tables on the world number #1 after losing to Nadal in the Frech open final, I'm hoping so. Inser is also though after a 5 set match against Raonic.

Never seen an umpire given a pep-talk to a player. What the umpire did is admirable, but he crossed the line.
In my eyes the umpire will get sanctionized.

I agree that he did crossed the line but the unfortunately, he will not get a sanctions.

Quote
The US Open said a "comprehensive review" by multiple tournament officials found that Mohamed Lahyani's chat with the Australian player went "beyond protocol".

However, spokesman Chris Widmaier said the umpire would not be sanctioned on account of his "exemplary track record as an international tennis official".

That's really bizarre and I don't know if we have seen that before. Kyrgios was down and everything was not going his way. Then suddenly, their "pep-talk" somewhat re-ignite him and breeze through the next set and win the match. I'm not really sure though if the umpire has violated some protocol here. He has been criticized but I don't know if US Tennis Association will penalized him or something.

Any tennis pundits around who can chime about the incident?

Roger Federer is one star who already voice out his opinion against this so called pep-talk. So its going to be interesting when both of them play together on the next match.

Yeah its a tough situation and I'm not sure how it will end, Yeah Federer did voice his opinion which is interesting as the two now must play each other tomorrow so I wonder how that match will go as Kyrgios says that the umpire shouldn't get in trouble over the pep talk.

Nadal had a tough encounter with Khachanov winning in 4 sets after coming from 1 set down. I say tough as the last 2 sets went into tie breaks. Thiem also came from 1 set down to win in 4 and even Anderson had a tough match eventually winning in 5 sets.

For me, the umpire has cross the line definitely. Why the hell he needed to go and talk to Nick. To be fair with Kyrgios, he didn't asked for it. But it looks like his small talk is seen as somewhat coaching him. If Kyrgios needed medical attention, I'm sure that he will call for it, but he didn't and the umpire move is seen like urging and pushing Nick to show more which he eventually did and won the match.

@Kemarit

Yes I was thinking the same before the tournament but I guess he felt that he could play.

Something interesting happened today in the Kyrgios match, he lost the 1st set and was down 0-3 in the 2nd set when at the break the chair umpire came down and gave Kyrgios a pep talk which work wonders as he came out and won the 2nd set and went on to win the match in 4 sets. He actually won easy in the 3rd and 4th sets. I have never seen this happen in tennis before so what ever he said must of sparked Kyrgios. Now he must go on and face Federer in the 3rd round so we'll see how well he goes. Djokovic plays soon, hopefully he can get through as well.
