I don't think it's related to gambling or commercial, India has a history to avoid follow- on numerous times be it home or away test matches. The only logical argument in this test match, Virat can give is net practice for Indian batsmen and resting Seamers.

  • 275 vs NZ Ahmedabad 1999  S. Tendulkar
  • 231 vs Aus SCG 2003/04       Sourav Ganguly
  • 319 vs Eng Oval 2007           Rahul Dravid
  • 258 vs NZ Indore 2016         Virat
  • 309 vs SL Galle 2017            Virat
  • 299 vs Ban Hyderabad 2017  Virat
  • 292 vs Aus MCG 2018/19      Virat
  • 299 vs WI Kingston 2019 *    Virat
Out of 8, Virat didn't ask for follow on 5 times, well, I think he always wants to bat and have some scored besides his name  Cheesy so that he can get enough chance to chase S. Tendulkar.
I was expecting a follow on yesterday when WI was 79/7.

And then you wake up from the dream and see India won by 300+ Runs.  Smiley
There is no Ben strokes in WI team who can do this miracle.

ROFL...

If wishes were horses, beggars would ride.
If turnips were bayonets, I'd wear one by my side.
. (William Camden 1551–1623).

There is no Ben Stokes in the West Indies team, but they had players such as Russel and Pollard. But unfortunately they are more interested participating the T20 leagues around the world than representing the national side. So for now, West Indies can humbly take whatever thrashing they receive from India and use the TV revenues from this series to build grass-roots cricket.

But as I can see, things didn't played out as planned. India struggling at 9/1 after 6 overs. Mayank Agarwal trapped in front of the wickets by Kemar Roach for just 4 runs.
I pray for a batting disaster :-P

India all out under 79 runs
Target for WI is 378 runs to win. WI lost their 8th wicket to manage 278 runs but Roach played a phenomenal innings and WI won the match by only one wicket.

How about that? :-D

India could wrap up WI again very easily and could have an inning in hand. :-(
Okay, what could be his explanation here?

Well... let me guess. One possible explanation here:

You do not take the follow-on and a lot of gamblers lose their money.  Wink

Another one here:

So Kohli is using this opportunity to enhance his batting stats, for himself as well as for the other team members.
It is going to be good for the TV broadcasters as well.

But as I can see, things didn't played out as planned. India struggling at 9/1 after 6 overs. Mayank Agarwal trapped in front of the wickets by Kemar Roach for just 4 runs. Roach, with that 5 kg gold chain around his neck is literally frying the Indian batsmen. Rahul almost dragged one back to his stumps.

Why not follow on? Kohli chose to again bat but hope he doesn't bat till tomorrow and ends it today only. It was seriously not needed as they already had runs in hand. 100 more runs should be enough to declare now.

What the...
Come on Kohli! Really!!
India could wrap up WI again very easily and could have an inning in hand. :-(

Okay, what could be his explanation here?

Explanation is very simple. Now it is assured that India will win this test match. It doesn't matter whether they win the match with an innings to spare or not. So Kohli is using this opportunity to enhance his batting stats, for himself as well as for the other team members. Let the boys have some fun. They worked really hard in the humid West Indian weather. It is going to be good for the TV broadcasters as well.

This is surprise decision  becuase India could have won by innings and some runs and now since they have started batting they will just win by some runs . Though this match is just now formality and India will win this series by 2-0 .

Cricket is a commercial game and what you see is not what is actually going on.  Let me explain here.

Many gamblers and bookies must have put a lot of money that India will enforce the follow on. Also there is no reason for India to bat again when they can easily finish the match in next two sessions.

You do not take the follow-on and a lot of gamblers lose their money.  Wink

I was also thinking the same but hell, once again India is coming to bat. It would probably be easily won with a margin of innings, if not, still India could get the match won. What the fuck is blowing in Kohli's mind?

One yorker or well directive bouncer can finish roach's inning, and on another hand, Jahmar Hamilton is in the mood of setting camp Cheesy 3 runs with 56 balls, his defense is good though.
No enough, he is gone :-P
One more wicket to take and WI are surely going to trail by more than 250 runs. Despite the batting practice and all these things you are talking about, I think Kohli will ask WI to follow on. Winning by an innings is much more prestigious than winning by other margin and India have a good chance for it in this Test.

Edit: WI booked by 117 runs LOL.

Come of Kohli! Follow on!

WI will most likely reach 150 in the first innings but if they get more, India may choose to put more 100 runs o the board so that even if WI reach 250+ runs, India would calmly win the match and series. I wonder who will they choose as the man of the match/series this time in case the match ends tomorrow.

Looking at the scoreboard it's obvious that WI will follow on and I think India will have an inning in hand LOL

Comparatively WI is batting well today. I was offline yesterday but watching the match, I did not expect them to score 100+ runs in this innings when they lost 7 wickets for 78 runs. The resistance we are seeing now from Roach is temporary.

I want to see follow on as well, but Virat is unpredictable with his decisions, who knows if he opts to bat again and say to everyone that their batsmen can use some batting practice.   Undecided

Ishant has been performing exceedingly well with both bat and ball so far in this series and now the selectors will be a worried lot. There are too few slots and too many talented bowlers. In the West Indian pitches they can go with three pacers - Ishant, Bumrah and Shami. But one of them needs to be dropped for the sub-continental matches.

I would go with Sharma and Bumrah as both are the best bowlers India has had but I still doubt if Sharma can perform the same way against other teams as earlier he was known for giving away too many runs and wides due to his height. Just hope his talent is not limited only to weak teams like WI.
Well, both were good bowlers for India, and today bumrah has performed big in bowling. In the past the tail end wickets of India used to fall easier. These days slowly bowlers too performing good, Sharma is an example for the same. Earlier he will not withstand wickets for more than five balls. In bowling Sharma used to perform tremendous in a match and by the next match there won't be big contributions. He needs to maintain a steady performance against each and every team.

But still they managed 416 without Jadeja, all thanks to Vihari's 100+ runs. Yes, I was not expecting Sharma to score the runs buthe did lol. He batted like Ashwin used to with Dhoni. I was only holding on Jadeja-Vihari's partnership which did not last long.

The way WI are playing, the first innings will get over before lunch and the second after lunch Cheesy
