anything that goes out of control and starts to be a problem in your life can become an addiction
but usually people in balance who have good emotional networks, exercise, eat and sleep well don't become addicted
so it's a matter of taking care and always being alert
People who falls into addiction are yes mentally unstable. Sometimes they treat gambling as they way out to their stress but in fact if they will not process it well it can only be a stressor to them and can make their state worsen. We just need to gamble when we are okay, well rested and fine because it can do a lot of things and affect us so much on our gameplay.

Yes, you're right, that's why we have to control ourselves when playing gambling because when we get out of control it will certainly make us fall into high curiosity so that we become addicts faster, the ambition to earn a lot of income and money is the main factor that people can be an addict,

I think by changing the mindset that is intending to gamble happily maybe it can prevent us from being addicted because we gamble not making money as our main goal so when you lose it won't be a big problem, that's why it's always difficult for me to control myself when gambling, I realized that one way is to change our mindset.

I'll give you a little extra advice.
it would be better to avoid the mindset of winning big or making big money from gambling. in simple terms, if someone is too ambitious to get a win, all they have in mind is wanting to win, but when they get defeated, it will definitely be difficult to avoid emotions.
almost all gambling addicts must have started with a lot of money.
usually thinking like gambling is the best way to make big money is the beginning of gambling addiction, when it continues to grow then their ambition will begin to damage their awareness in making decisions

so it needs self-reflection to be able to prevent whether oneself has entered the addiction stage or not. do not let you commit criminal acts such as stealing, robbing and even killing just for gambling and the craziest thing is suicide because of gambling debts and so on

the main thing is to control emotions. as I said before that even professional gamblers will sometimes lose against their emotions and will end up losing which makes it difficult for gamblers to avoid emotions.
all of that just depends on the situation at that time, I mean if you gamble in a calm situation without any problems I think you can control your emotions but if when you gamble you have other problems of course it will be more emotional and difficult to control.

Any addiction will eventually drive a person into a corner from which it may seem impossible to escape, this is why there are some people that take the most irreversible decision that a human being can take, which is to end their own lives, however there is always a solution to the problems people have created for themselves due to their gambling addiction, it is just there is no way to solve them quickly, as those which are addicted spend years or even decades in that condition and they cannot hope that everything is going to fix itself overnight.
Addiction is a very dangerous act that can destroy ones life as I can testify to this because it nearly destroyed my own life , I started gambling at a very tender age and it sinked into my blood when I was in secondary school and even during my stay in the tertiary institution. I often gamble away my school fees and it was like a poison that was rapidly running in my veins until this habit was getting out of hand and I had to take a very difficult decision which involved me disconnecting myself with every thing that has to do with gambling and I didn't do this on my own as I was aided with multiple counselling sessions and all this was what contributed to my successful retreat from this dangerous act although some times I do predict but now its different as I do it only for fun and no strings attached.
While I have not suffered any sort of addiction, for what I can tell from the testimonies of those which did this is a complete nightmare they do not wish even to their worst enemy, so it is nice to see you made a whole recovery but it seem you went through some dark places before you did so, which is understandable as once people get addicted to gambling it can be very hard to admit this is the case and then take the necessary steps to recover your life and everything you lost during the process.

This is why I really pity those people that are addicted. They seem to lose control over their life and becomes dependent and taken by the things they like or love to do.

Why? In life, we have freedom of choice, and the results of every choice we make are what we should be able to handle because, in the first place, no one made those choices for us, but we really did make them for ourselves, and the thing there is that they themselves (real addicts) are not even complaining of their gambling lifestyle unless they are tired of it, and if they really are, it's a choice they made for themselves, and they should be able to stop with self-discipline, just as the user DaNNy said, he was once addicted but still had to stop it. That's why it's said that "too much of everything is not good." One is not supposed to even have let themselves become so addicted to the extent that it becomes a problem to stop what they start based on their own choice.

Yep, addicts can be pretty dangerous, look at the story in OP, an aged person kidnaps his own grandchild only to get some money for his gambling addiction, and I still find this act not to be too evil since he probably didn't harm her but people can go to any extent only to get people threatened so that they pay them ransom money.

A simple and decent person can become an evil individual if they become addicted to something like gambling and they will start doing unusual things only to get money for their gambling activities once the urge hits them hard.
People who have become addicted to gambling will not think twice about committing crimes, even kidnapping their grandchildren, hoping to get the ransom money. That person had lost his mind to have to do such a thing. And that's because he was already a gambling addict, so he didn't think that what he was doing was already a crime. That is why we must be careful not to become addicted to gambling and always try to control ourselves when playing gambling. Never underestimate offers that can make us forget ourselves so that we even get too deep into gambling.

Gambling addiction also makes people do very bad things when they spend everything that they have but their urge continues tickling them to gamble more and that is when they decide to get money from somewhere by doing anything.
They are not thinking of anything but just to keep playing and satisfying their lust in gambling. I see your point and that's the valid one when there's already an addiction inside the persons minds. You can't measure how far an addicted person can go with the wild things that will comes to their minds when they already lost all their money.

They can do bad things to the point that they will harm someone to get the money out from other people's pockets.

It is a real experience that can be a reminder to yourself how dangerous it is when gambling makes someone addicted. In fact, you start gambling at a fairly young age and are still in school. But when you've gone through all of that, of course you already have guidelines on how not to become an addict, you start to learn to manage your emotions, not to make gambling your main income, but only as entertainment. Control your emotions and not focus too much on gambling alone will give you control over yourself
I'll give you a little extra advice.

It does seem crazy, to end your life because of gambling. If you are already addicted to gambling it has become a dangerous tendency. not doing gambling for a second will bother them. there are many bad effects of gambling addiction, but the most fatal impact is when you decide to commit suicide because you don't have the money to do gambling. this has become an acute addiction. It takes a lot of support from the closest people so that the addiction that is already heavy does not lead to ending life or action.

You've come through adversity. Those who get into gambling at a young age are more likely to become addicted. Because the thinking power of those gamblers cannot be developed. They cannot understand what is good and what is bad. They just focus on their gambling. Moreover, gaming addiction is not only for children. It can happen to people of every level. This requires proper education. If a gambler does not know about the things that need to be followed, it will not be possible to easily recover from the addiction. If we don't dream big from gambling then addiction is less likely to happen.
When you are young and you are really that prone into these things then you would likely be making yourself as a gambler on early age and would might really be that get addicted overtime. This is why as a parent or guardian then it would really be just that right that we should really be watching out on our kids in regarding to this on which letting them or tolerating them would really be giving that negative impact into their lives.
Its better to be able to monitor out on what are the things that they've been doing  and able to stop out if ever there's something not  good along the way.
Getting addicted on gambling is really that possible specially if you are a type of person who cant really be able to stop that gambling urge and greed which you can potentially be able to mess up your life onwards.
You would really be doing all sorts of things which is the result of such addiction. Getting away from its shackles is never been simple.

Wow, it's good you are being honest; that's what most people here will not agree to. Gambling addiction is just a general thing for many people, especially if you are not doing any other job that is keeping you busy or taking more of your attention than the gambling.

I have seen cases of gambling addiction; my friend in school was a chronic addict who used his school fee to gamble, sold his phone to gamble, and even picked pockets to gamble. The worst of all is that he stole from his parents to gamble. Gambling is manipulative; the more one gambles, the more the person's attention is drawn to it.

I can't say I really got addicted to gambling, but I gambled a lot in the past, but now I gamble less.

Having gambling addiction is really a difficult battle. It involves a lot of challenges to the addicted gambler himself and to the people around him.

If you are not a responsible gambler, there may be a numerous negative implications to you than the benefits of it because in the first place, if you don't have self-control, discipline, and the ability to distinguish whether to push through or just stop will place you in a disadvantaged position that could possibly have chain reactions. If you no longer take control of your emotions and your gambling habits, the chances of you stealing and lying from someone you know is high because of the desperateness to sustain your gambling lifestyle.

This is why I really pity those people that are addicted. They seem to lose control over their life and becomes dependent and taken by the things they like or love to do. Gambling addiction can in fact be prevented, only if you know your boundaries right from the start and implements it overall and consistently along your gambling journey. It's good to know that you've lessened gambling interaction for your own good, and I do hope that your friend way back in school recovered.

Sometimes I keep thinking if anything like gambling addiction could ever end. We keep seeing people getting addicted to gambling because they consistently keep doing it without the conspicuousness of what could be the adverse effect. Ending gambling addiction is not something we could easily stooped but it all involves all round awareness and help from other people to put it to an end. People who are addicted to gambling always have the problem of no quitting because they can easily control there emotions as a gambler.

It takes time to stop from what we have been addicted. The only key to stop from being gambling addiction was coming from ourselves. The feel to play it will come anytime and that depends on the user itself whether he was able to control it or not.
Just try to take it for the entertainment purpose only and that's it. They can control it but they must be forcing themselves to make it happen.

I saw that so many people who have become addicted can play normally without even getting disturbed by their addiction. The only key whether you have intention to do that or not.
People need to take care of themselves. Only theirs can stop themselves.

Good thing that you manage to escape or manage to control as you mentioned is like a poison inside you that controlled you from time to time, who might taught that you will be able to use your school fees just to satisfy your addictions, something that really being manipulated by the addiction that conquer your mindset.

You are fully occupied to the point that there's nothing inside you aside from playing and spending both your time and money.

It seems to me that you know the answer to your question in advance - anywhere in the world where there is gambling, there will always be a gambling addict and more than one. People gamble for completely different reasons - someone plays for fun, someone goes to the casino to show off to friends, someone thinks that he must be lucky, and winning can change his life, someone just heard about the Martingale strategy and wants to try it out for himself. Each of us pursues our goals, but if we forget about self-control, then any of us can become gambling addicts. But in a casino it is very difficult to control oneself.

That's why I said it was a mistake if someone committed suicide because of his problem. They have to be able to get up and not give up and try to finish well and realize that it was a mistake they had made.

I have felt that pain, but I can still think that committing suicide is a wrong action and should be avoided. In addition, suicide is also prohibited in any religion. But some people cannot survive and get up after experiencing bankruptcy in gambling and eventually die of recurrent heart disease.

Indeed it is a mistake to take owns life, but coward people wanted the easy way out without thinking the people they left behind will be the one to suffer.  Not only coward but also inconsiderate and selfish.
They only think of using a shortcut to end everything. They lost even when they became addicted to gambling before finally taking their own lives, thinking that was the best they could do without ever thinking there was anything they could do. If they think long and hard about trying to change everything they do, it looks like there is still a way, but of course, it requires the support of everyone around them. Without the support of the people around them, they are alone and without any strength to get up and realize their mistakes.

Brecht says that nothings should look like it is impossible to change.

Taking our own lives is a permanent solution for temporary problems
this too shall pass is something that is useful to remember in moments of pain
