Regarding Olympics, the Japanese have said that they plan to host a full event and all the planning has not stopped, neither the preparations. They are adjusting it a lot though and yes, the Japanese are meticulous to a point. They will do everything and use and show off all their tech to make sure they have clean and sterile environments if necessary with VR gear for all spectators I bet;)

But, as I remember, I heard on the news last week that Olympics will be held or canceled. They won't postpone it.

Where did you hear this? They happen every 4 years and are a pinnacle in the career of most athletes around the world.
I seriously doubt they would cancel them completely, it's just too much negatives if they go that way.

Maybe having them the same year as the Winter ones would be a possible solution - but then again, that is a whole 2-year delay.

Some tough choices are going to have to be made, postponing the EURO is a far simpler decision to make.

I really can't remember where did I hear that. I think it was on the radio. The radio host was talking about an online article which stated that Olympics definitely won't be postponed and that it can be either held like it's scheduled or canceled.

I know what Olympic games mean to every athlete in the World. It's by far the most significant competition and I'm sure every athlete would rather cancel all other competitions than Olympics. That's why I hope they will find some kind of a solution. After all, they are Japanese. If they can't find a solution, no one can Grin

Unrelated to UEFA but...Man, what's with the japanese and the Olympic commitee not wanting to postpone the whole thing? We all know there's A LOT of money involved but this is embarrassing.

They are probably not as concerned. Japan has less than 1000 cases and the virus is under control, if they introduce heavy quarantine controls they might even make it.
It would be better to postpone ofc, but logistically it's a nightmare.

They should be concerned because there's no way they will be able to isolate all fans that are contagious. True, some say that COVID-19 will die out before summer but no one probably knows because it's not an ordinary flue.

I read several times that Japanese still insist to keep Olympics as scheduled and no clear answer was given AFAIK..
Regarding the current situation in Japan, they can hold it since the situation is +/- under control and the timing isn't bad (end of July), however nothings guarantee that other countries could control the virus by July...

Don't think so.
In this case, problems will be competitions for 2021 since sports like athletics games has their own Mondial on 2021 2023 2025, etc.

Yep, they all have different competition schedules, which makes it harder to transfer than one competition like football.

I do not see anything on UEFA but I can see the Wikipedia pages are already calling it EURO 2021;) So threat title changed!
UEFA released an official statement: https://www.uefa.com/insideuefa/mediaservices/mediareleases/newsid=2641071.html

Well, Olympics might present a bigger challenge to postpone than the EURO. We'll see how it goes but I have a feeling Olympic Games will be held in 2020.

The Euro is now officially postponed, soon the Olympics games will be postponed too IMHO.

Next week they will have a meeting and they probably delay the EURO to winter or more likely to summer 2021.
Leagues as Serie A and probably more asked to EUFA a dealy to be able to play games in summer cause the current Virus Situation.

I think we have 0% chances at the moment to see the EURO 2020 in July.

OP is definitely on the ball, I just noticed the thread title has changed already from 2020 to 2021 Cheesy
In all seriousness the move by UEFA was sensible & works out the best for everybody. Now we get football in 2021 summer & the World Cup the summer after Wink
Every sporting event is either cancelled, postponed or delayed. The world has no answer to the coronavirus and that is very strange. With the Euro 2020 delayed, it means that in 2021 we will have both Euro and Copa America. We have to wait for an year to see our favorite players and teams in action.
And we risk to have the longest and the most boring summer ever if this Corona virus will continue spreading like this.
We will have this summer another championship about the most infected countries...

Because the situation is not possible right so that this delay is longer to feel safer if it is held in 2021 and I think in that year the situation of the country will return conducive and the corona virus will soon disappear.

Indeed, we have to be a little patient to wait for the match to start because some European leagues are also experiencing delays and this also does not know whether in April will be sterile from this outbreak because the current pademic is still ongoing.

Slava Ukraini!
It was difficult to imagine other scenario. It's right and logical decision by UEFA. It was also confirmed that Copa America will be moved to 2021.
And what will happen with the matches for the World cup 2022 qualifications? Those matches were supposed to play after the EURO2020 and the whole next year, weren't they? I know this is maybe a little offtopic but I'm really curious what will happen with those matches. I'm guessing that national teams will have really tight schedule for the next year.
Well, obviously they will have to make changes in schedule. Football players will have very bussy time and intensive schedule.

I think it was the best decision from UEFA judging the situations in the world now.We have to make a sacrifice, the players too and everyone else in this difficult time in order to enjoy a 2021 full of football events.I think the national teams can handle a really tight schedule and also offer a really good show to watch. We have to stay united in distance in order to pass this dark time we are facing now.

I couldn't agree with you more. This really are tough times. But I remember that some players were complaining in the past about the tight schedule. I just hope they won't evade playing for the national teams because of that. That would really ruin the championship.

@buwaytress  oi! i think this deserved a new thread title  Smiley

Oi toma damn me but yes, thanks for the tag. It hasn't always worked for me somehow but today it pinged angrily at me several times haha.

But damn, so this means Euro is next year, it means (to my logic) all the leagues have a chance to resume and finish late. Maybe they should be cancelling one tournament anyway that hasn't started or just push everything back, why not?

With no major tournaments in the summer (the other big one is the 'Copa America 2020' but it's very likely it'll get postponed too), I think the domestic leagues have a good chance of resuming around May/June.

@buwaytress  oi! i think this deserved a new thread title  Smiley

This is the best decision uefa can get, because it takes every nations mind off the tournament until next year June, and definitely gives opportunity to european league competitions to conclude their season without any worries at all, The present champions league and europa league will also be concluded seamlessly.

The remaining issue i think resolved, is the issue regarding players who would be free agents by June, would they play on if the league ends beyond june ? how would the summer break work out for the players too ?
