Adam here, new Director of Marketing at Vault of Satoshi! We've been having some internal discussions about adding new altcoin options to our exchange when we launch our new coin-to-coin trading system and we wanted to reach out to the public and get a feel for what coins they were most interested in seeing!

We all want to see Goldcoin (GLD) added!  Smiley

Buying Carpe Diem Coins

Carpe diem is an aphorism usually translated "seize the day"
From a poem written in the Odes in 23 BC by the Latin poet Horace

What does Carpe Diem have to do with virtual currencies?
Great question! Carpe Diem, seize the day, inspired this coin. By taking advantage of today instead of waiting for tomorrow, you will ensure yourself a stronger stake in the DIEM block chain. With block reward halvings every day and only 8 second blocks, DIEM aims to corner both the long-term investor market, as well as the merchant interest with extremely fast transactions and an ASIC backed network for added security

Won't 8 second blocks have tons of forks at launch?
We knew 8 second blocks were going to be what merchants needed, but it leaves us open to a launch full of miniforks, as many coins have done in the past. Those were also Scrypt, not SHA, and ASIC mining at launch brought another factor we had to use in our math. In the end, we chose a very fast difficulty retarget, active on launch to avoid instant mining, and set up the network a little different prior to launch

When setting up the initial seednodes, we actually mined 1 block per node (16 blocks) at 40,000 DIEM each instead of the standard 1,000,000, also using standard BTC diff retarget so it would stay at launch difficulty. This was our "safe guard" to ensure no mini forks on launch. After those first blocks were mined, we took the entire network down and forked the coin to properly reward 1,000,000 DIEM each, and implemented our difficulty retargeting. Essentially, we hard coded a hard fork to DIEM and launched with the post fork clients. This is why you won't see the fork in the code, but a block explorer will verify all of this

Anyway, why did we do these extra steps? Simple. When connecting to the network for the first time, your client had to go through either the seed nodes or proper, synced nodes, and "checkpoint" the first few blocks at different rewards. This way if someone got a minifork from block 1, they would not be able to continue due to no connections, which also stops that node from spreading any misinformation

As you have all seen, it worked flawlessly. Even with the huge hash rate fluctuations of the first day of a coin, we STILL were only 45 minutes ahead of schedule, thanks to our planning and difficulty retargeting

TL:DR; DIEM didn't fork once, even with ASIC mining and 8 second blocks and the difficulty is working perfectly. Flawless launch and difficulty adjustments

Translation
Carpe is the second-person singular present active imperative of carpō, "pick or pluck," used by Ovid to mean "enjoy, seize, use, make use of". Diem is the accusative case of the noun "dies", that means "day". A less literal translation of "Carpe diem" would thus be "enjoy the day" or "pluck the day [as it is ripe]"

Original usage from Odes 1.11, in Latin and English:
Tu ne quaesieris, scire nefas, quem mihi, quem tibi finem di dederint, Leuconoe, nec Babylonios temptaris numeros. ut melius, quidquid erit, pati. seu pluris hiemes seu tribuit Iuppiter ultimam, quae nunc oppositis debilitat pumicibus mare Tyrrhenum. Sapias, vina liques et spatio brevi spem longam reseces. dum loquimur, fugerit invida aetas: carpe diem, quam minimum credula postero.
---
Don't ask (it's forbidden to know) what end the gods have given me or you, Leuconoe. Don't play with Babylonian numerology either. How much better it is to endure whatever will be! Whether Jupiter has allotted you many more winters or this one, which even now wears out the Tyrrhenian sea on the opposing rocks, is the final one — be wise, be truthful, strain the wine, and scale back your long hopes to a short period. While we speak, envious time will have {already} fled: seize the day, trusting as little as possible in the next (day).

Carpe Diem concept
Perhaps the first written expression of the concept is the advice given by Siduri to Gilgamesh, telling him to forgo his mourning and embrace life although some scholars see it as simply urging Gilgamesh to abandon his mourning, "reversing the liminal rituals of mourning and returning to the normal and normative behaviors of Mesopotamian society."

Meaning
In Horace, the phrase is part of the longer Carpe diem quam minimum credula postero, which can be translated as "Seize the day, put very little trust in tomorrow (/the future)". The ode says that the future is unforeseen and that one should not leave to chance future happenings, but rather one should do all one can today to make one's future better. This phrase is usually understood against Horace's Epicurean background. It is important to note that the "Carpe diem" phrase is often misinterpreted and misused in contemporary popular culture, to justify reckless behaviour ("you only live once"). However, the meaning of Carpe diem is not to ignore the future, but rather not to trust that everything is going to fall into place for you and taking action for the future today.

I also support noble coin.

The dedication and openness that the devs bring is a true breath of fresh air in this market and it has a very friendly and supportive community. They (successfully ;P) support charity through the water project and sponsor e-sport which is quite unique while being relevant to a lot of miners. They are always looking for ways to grow the coin and their market place gives excellent added value particularly with precious metals/bullion and merchants soon to be added.

Hey Adam,
that's great news! I believe VoS was badly in need of a good marketing Director, great exchange but marketing was lagging behind in my opinion Wink

Anyways, I vote for CryptogenicBullion (CGB)!
Its one of the few (if not the only one) that combines long term dev support with low inflation ( 2% pa), which makes it the ideal coin for traders and investors.
While many new coins get a big hype and trade volume, they will almost all be forgotten in the next month and be abandoned by there "devs", leaving behind a piece of garbage and clunking up the exchange(s).
I think its of great importance that before adding new coins, look at there long term potential! (long term potentila = Active dev team, low inflation rate and unique features)
As of now I only believe in 3 "coins" to have a long term potential, BTC, CGB, NXT and eMunie (eMunie: not released yet, though in development for the last year) and maybe dogee

Also I advise to take a look at this list from "Freetrade", who is known to be a great developer and respected community member, the list reviews some of the popular coins (including CGB) about there long term potential.
I found it quite informative: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/analysis-altcoin-investing-423000

Looks interesting, I think I'll check this one out in more detail.

In the past I've gone for the more traditional POW coins like BTC/LTC/DGC and SRC but this could be a nice diversification to investigate.

Definitely. The Proof of Stake minting process allows for people without powerful gaming GPUs to generate new coins through minting. This means everyone gets a chance to participate in new coin generation. A side effect is that this takes tons less electricity overall and it's friendlier for the environment. Good for responsibility and sustainability.

I too would like to voice my support for Mintcoin. I don't have much to add to what the previous posters have pointed out, but I would like to emphasize the Devs and the community. I think this coin has great potential, primarily for this reason. We are a vision oriented group, and I see the coin "going places" because of this.

I think Mintcoin would make an excellent addition!

I love Mintcoin think it should be added as well. It's got a great minting system in place now that pays out 20% in the first year, 15% in the second, 10% in the third, and 5% in the fourth and subsequent years. It has a great developer and a great community.

It is only a bit over a month old and it's main thread has almost 500 pages already. It's got tons of support. The first multipool for Mintcoin saw its hashrate go from 7MH/s to over 80MH/s in just two days. It's a fantastic coin that will an excellent volume of customers to the Vault of Satoshi. I strongly suggest you consider Mintcoin.

I'd like to voice my support for DGC, I've been following it since its inception and the dev behind it really cares about it. It was launched May last year with plenty of forewarning, no premine, and ascending block rewards from 0 prevented any instamine. After 10 months only ~10% of the total supply is in circulation, and the dev has updated the wallet multiple times to react to the environment. DGC has also kept a constant 5-10 BTC volume on cryptsy since they listed it. I trust my money with this coin.

I have to agree with the dissent against Quark and Feathercoin though, both were massively instamined. I'm paranoid their markets are just massive bagholders selling to each other which is why they have so much volume. SecureCoin is a much better version of Quark as it follows bitcoin's economic model; 5 coins minted every minute, and it's also under the same developer as DGC so you've got the reliability of its creator behind it (not sure if Quark's developer is around either, I know FTC's was unable to prevent a fork). It seems like it's a complicated matter to remove a coin after its been set up though.

In any case, thanks for your work in bringing crypto to the common folk, it won't be long yet Smiley

please look into adding myriad coin to this list, it's not a copy paste/premine/ipo/animal/country/shit coin, it's a geniune game changer, a coin that is asic resistant by embracing asics. what ? yes what I just wrote, this coin has 5 independent algorythms each with it's own difficulty (1 block re-target 2.5 minutes for each algo to get a block). the algos are sha256d scrypt skein qubit and groestl making the coin minable with any hardware you have asic gpu or even cpu. it doesn't get any fairer than this. I won't bore you with a long description other details can be found here: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/annxmy-myriad-multi-algo-fair-secure-483515 , read it, it's worth it this concept is too good to be ignored.
