Yeah, good luck recovering anything out of this even with a solid proof of depositing fiat money or cryptocurrencies there. How much information about the depositors do the authorities even possess? New Zealand being a Five Eyes member country wouldn't help either here.
It was actually required to deposit fiat money (not necessarily for AML reasons but to limit deposits made using stolen/phished credentials), don't remember whether it was necessary to complete a withdrawal. Accounts without KYC couldn't withdraw less than 100 BTC per day either, IIRC.
On top of all that, I have to wonder how many legitimate customers ever completed KYC -- it was not required -- and would also want to involve themselves in a Department of Justice victim claim.

I presume it's being treated as another Silk Road and all the money is automatically condemned as evil and kept to spend on training people to choke the innocent to death in a sneakier manner.

This is quite different than cases like the Mt. Gox liquidation. I don't believe there's much chance of recovery for customers. Regulators have asserted over and over that BTC-e was essentially a money laundering operation, implying its money was tainted. FinCEN also fined them for $110 Million, so the bulk of the money is already spoken for. I wonder if other regulators might follow suit after the Vinnik case is decided too.

There are no indicators of anyone of them having any violence inflicted upon their persons. One guy is alleged to have transferred money to FSB after being "persuaded" by them, and someone who lost money at wex is sending a lot of bomb threats, causing quite a ruckus:

I thought these scammers got take out by the hit on their heads last year in RUS after they ran the exit scam on BTC-E?

I don't think Vasilev has the keys of the wallets. Admin does, and he seems to have dissapeared form planet earth. I do think they can get Vasilev to talk, Italians know how to get people to talk...
sadly, i'm not sure this means much for the victims. to hear vasilev tell it last year, he had completely lost control over administration of the exchange. i doubt he even knows who controls the wallets. (or what's left of them)
The money is likely long gone, but there are suspicions he was spending way above his means and that the money he was spending came from btc-e/wex.
Wow. What was he thinking traveling outside Russia/Russia-aligned countries? Or he's already consulted lawyers who told him there isn't enough evidence for him to worry about.
incredible---the same exact mistake alexander vinnik made! vasilev should have known the stakes. regardless of what his lawyers may have said, it was a dumb move.
