Quite informative posts, OP. I've also been vegetarian for years and still feeling great!

Eating meat used to be relevant for us and made us evolve as humans because it was the most widely available complete source of proteins and other nutriments. Now, healthier and more human alternatives are so commonplace that there's few argument to support eating antibiotics-filled meat that comes from factory farming.

However, I do believe that an individuals genes play a role in this; some people are legitimately intolerant to vegetarian diets and lack energy if they don't eat meat. Others tolerate it very well. As a vegetarian, its important to keep that in mind before criticizing omnivorous diets.

I raised my own livestocks. I have my own fish pond. So those chemicals is not for me.

If everybody did that, eating meat would be no problem at all, other than on the individual level for ethical reasons.

this could get religious, but why did God create animals?

Grow up. No one created animals. They evolved out of other animals. This is the first time that I am hearing the argument, god created the animals to become food to the humans. Where is it said so?  Grin

From Bible:

Genesis 1:30

And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so.

Romans 14:1-23

As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions. One person believes he may eat anything, while the weak person eats only vegetables. Let not the one who eats despise the one who abstains, and let not the one who abstains pass judgment on the one who eats, for God has welcomed him. Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand. One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind.

Unless you've misquoted or taken it out of context neither of those say anything specifically about eating meat, but the bible does say something about having dominion over all animals or something.

Nothing wrong with eating meat. Eat too much and it'll hurt your body and you get insufficient fiber in your body. Unless you mean to get philosophical about killing animals, that is. Of course, most of our meat in the markets come from animals that have been abused, drugged and killed inhumanely in captivity. The meat we eat is filled with these drugs and will eventually have a negative impact on our body. The pens etc they are made to stay in are also extremely unhygienic and are hotbed for diseases like bird flu and swine flu. Heck, some strains are even resistant to the most powerful antibiotics we have. So,yeah, nothing wrong with eating meat as such, but our consumerist economy has fuddled the process up.

Confirmation bias?

It would be if I hadn't experienced both sides and found one that had exponentially improved my life over the other.

If you check out the other pages you can find a lot more information on the subject too.

Plus if you haven't tried both sides, researched ideas and concepts about the other side, and actually experienced what it was like, then maybe you should admit it's you who has a confirmation bias.

If you read some of my earlier posts, I tell stories of how I used to think every sick looking person was vegetarian / vegan. That all those big muscular guys were all heavy meat eaters. That you needed meat to become huge. That eating meat was the manly thing to do.

Even though the world's largest and strongest animals including giraffes, elephants, and gorillas are all vegetarian or even vegan.

This is what meat propaganda has you believing. That you need milk. That eggs are good for you. That meat has a lot of protein and nutrients. They also have pictures of happy animals on the cover of their products. In school it is fed, children eat it no questions asked, which included me and everyone else I knew.

Tell me who has confirmation bias: the guy with the open mind that has learned to think outside the box or the guy with the closed mind that continues to believe in cultural beliefs placed upon them without ever learning to question their beliefs or culture.

They were created to serve men, so they can be eaten (it's in the Bible somewhere), so Christians ate animals from the beginning, it's part of their culture.

Eating meat is not wrong. Mankind would have not evolve if not for eating meat. Just keep balance diet and regular exercise.

We used to cannibalise too. Is that not wrong then?

this could get religious, but why did God create animals?

He didn't.

How do you know that plants have no conscious and don't feel pain <.< were you a plant before ? hmm , also we eat animals that eat mostly plants, because animals that eat meat are unhealthy to us in general -.-, plants deserves more rights !

You're not being serious with this right? Hard to tell on the internet.

Just a tad sarcastic Cheesy but half serious as well, While I can understand and respect vegetarians dislike of meat, I really hate it when someone tells me eating meat is animal cruelty, Animal cruelty is torturing animals for the sake of having fun, that's cruelty that needs to be punished, as much as the guy who cut a tree or burn it that took hundreds of years to grow for the sake of having fun Smiley

Well which part were you sarcastic on?

OP it seems you were leading an unhealthy lifestyle and had a bad diet before. You said you ate at all the fast-food places. Maybe that's why you feel better and more energized now.

Let's see now. According to Consumer Trends, 83% of Americans (Vegans only make up .5% of the population) have to drink coffee every single morning just so they can wake up for the day.

Then in the afternoon they have to drink even more coffee. Then companies started coming out with energy drinks just so these guys can get through their day without feeling so tired and lethargic all the time. They came out with drinks like Monster and 5 Hour Energy filled with tons of crap that's not good for your health and people actually drink it (there are actually a lot of deaths attributed to Monster and 5 Hour Energy and other energy drinks).

Here is a poll on some Vegan forum about the amount of energy they had before and after:

Here are some quotes from the same thread about people who used to feel like crap before, but now they feel completely unstoppable throughout their day. My case isn't special by the way, a lot of other people experience this same exact thing that I describe myself:

More energy. Especially in the morning. It used to take me ages to wake up and get active in the mornings, now I have no trouble. I wake up and seem to bounce out of bed full of life. I also don't get so tired during the day either and can sleep better at night.

My stamina is off the scale now. Before going vegan I was getting fat and could barely run a mile. Now, a short two months later I'm jogging three, easily. I also require less sleep and get more rejuvination from what sleep I get.

I noticed (especially within the first couple of months of going vegan) that I had loads more energy! I am sure my new diet had a lot to do with me not feeling so tired and lethargic all the time. Also, I have found that I can generally operate well receiving approximately 7 hours sleep per night (with the occaisional sleep in). In my pre-vegan days, I used to require 9 hours sleep at night.

I was already pretty energetic before but now I still feel energetic but I dont have that typical "crash" around dinner-time. I can go all day and be productive. It also takes me less time to study. That means more time to run in circles!!

When I became a lacto ovo vegetarian, I didn't notice much of a change in my energy level. When I went vegan, my energy is sky high! It's amazing how much dairy can sap energy.

Sometimes I get maybe 3 hours sleep in a 24 hour period, and whereas that used to kill me, I don't feel half bad. I rarely have to reach for the caffiene, and my brain at work seems more alert than before.

My energy has gone up after switching to vegan! My two friends who just recently switched said theirs went up too.

Even if it wasn't an ethical necessity - I'd still be vegan simply because of the extra energy it gives me - I do manual labour & look after my four kids so I need all the energy I can get...

I am on the verge of 85 and still work as hard as ever. I have lived quite long enough and am trying to die; but I simply cannot do it. A single beef-steak would finish me; but I cannot bring myself to swallow it. I am oppressed with a dread of living forever. That is the only disadvantage of vegetarianism

i used to get tired after playing a 4 hour gig on drums with a band. nowadays, and at 48 years old, i am still drumming like i was 20 years old, and i owe it to the combination of yoga and a vegan diet, plus trying to eat as raw as possible.

The other day I went out...I arrived at the club at 11:30 (btw I hadn't had much sleep the previous night) ....people who arrived a few hours later had given up dancing waaaay before I did....I didnt stop until nearly 5 am. When asked HOW ON EARTH I did it..I yelled "VEGANISM"

If you don't believe yet, it makes us feel unstoppable and filled with energy, plus we rarely get sick, and we are a lot smarter and stronger than before. We don't even miss out on eating 'meat' because that tastes terrible compared to the foods we eat now.

Most people would rather drink coffee every morning, screw up their thinking process, feel a crash in the afternoon, drink more coffee, screw up their body and brains further, rather than just eating healthier food that would literally solve all of their problems.

But you are lucky to see this kind of information online. I would never have become Vegan had I not seen another person talking about its benefits in another website and exposed me to this kind of information. Most people will never even meet a Vegan in their entire life let alone ever know that such a diet that will boost their energy to last throughout days, cure diseases without pills, and make them better overall exists.

The best diet is the scratch diet, as in cook your food from scratch with raw ingredients.

Nice, I think I`m going to take up on this.

Its so motivating to see other people who are physically in shape and still be vegan.

Nice dude, yeah Vegans have possibly the healthiest diet out there.

Let me help you get started with some tips for beginners and even though it's long, it saves you a lot of trouble so be sure to read everything!:

1) The easiest way to get started eating a Vegan diet is to eat meat substitutes. They taste nearly identically to meat if not better but they also provide more nutritional benefit for you and are cheaper. If you literally take all the meat you have been eating, replace them with Vegan meat substitutes, then you can call yourself a vegan even though you eat basically the same food as before.

If you go to your local grocery store you'll be able to find a lot of vegan meat products all mashed into one pile somewhere. This one has been my favorite meat substitute, literally costs $12 at Costco and can last you a week or more even if you eat one or two daily:

But you might like other Vegan meat substitutes as well:

Most of these foods are fortified with nutrients that come from animals too and more, like Vitamin B12, so it's like you were eating meat the entire time except healthier, less calories and no cholesterol.

The easiest way to tell if a food on the shelf is vegan or not is if it has cholesterol. If it has cholesterol, it means there is an animal product involved, therefore it is not vegan. If it doesn't have cholesterol, check the ingredients for milk or eggs. If no milk or eggs, it's Vegan! Most foods are vegan by the way, so it's not like you are limiting yourself in any way.

If you follow every advice here and exercise daily with all the extra energy you will be having, example I don't even feel tired after exercising anymore, you will be pretty much be set for life but make sure you educate yourself by reading everything now so you don't have trouble later on as there are important Vegan guidelines to follow.

---

2) Being a vegan means you are free to eat anything you want, but consciously choose to avoid meat and animal products. This means you don't have to be so strict and can be lenient sometimes and eat foods that contain egg or milk in them. You can even eat meat again if you want to try it out. You can say you are vegan if you are just trying these foods for a short time or to experiment, just make sure you avoid it at all costs otherwise. Just don't say that you are a vegan when you drink dairy milk or eat chicken all the time.

One time I tried to eat meat again after being Vegan for a while and I didn't like it at all... It didn't taste good in my mouth. It felt like chewing on a heated ragged piece of dirty brown clothing and then swallowing.

Similar to Mike Tyson: "Nah. I ate, like, the tiniest piece of meat, and I woke up violently sick. It was vicious pain. I was throwing up. And I realized meat's become a poison for me now."

---

3) Because this is a major lifestyle change for anybody, at first it will feel completely different from the way you were living before. You'll experience many different challenges that every Vegan had to face when getting started such as avoiding all meat and animal products, dealing with how your friends and family will react to you becoming a vegan, knowing what kinds of foods are available to you, learning to cook in a new style with new recipes, and other challenges that might be unique only to you.

Stick with it though and you'll really be rewarded with all the benefits of the Vegan diet. You will feel more energized, you will feel better everyday, you will feel like you are smarter than before, and you will rarely get sick.

You reminded me. I honestly don't even remember the last time I got sick. My friends and family members get sick every now and then and here I am, running laps around them. Some of them take pills, some of them take drugs, they are losing their hair, and they have all kinds of illnesses.

As a vegan, you basically don't have to worry about any of that. Just remember to eat healthy and stay physically fit as well.

---

4) Make sure you take a multivitamin everyday. Also add ground flaxseed to your diet.
This part is important. Most researches say multivitamins do nothing, while that might be true, I like to take comfort in the fact that multivitamins provide Vitamin B12, which is a nutrient you will need that you will not find in plants. It will just make you feel more energized if you decide to take one everyday.

Flaxseed is also important. Flaxseed is the food that contains the most Omega-3 Fatty Acids, way more than Fish oil. This is just as essential as the Vitamin B12 you need daily.

If you buy whole flaxseed and eat it, it will most likely pass through your system. Ground flaxseed is much more easily absorbed by your stomach so I suggest you buy them pre-grounded or grind them yourself at home in a blender. With this you can sprinkle it on your food whenever you want, and it adds a subtle peanut-like taste to your foods.

---

5) Do your research and educate yourself. I've come to find that for every kind of sickness there is, the Vegan diet, as long as you follow the guidelines correctly like I said above like take a multivitamin daily and eat grounded flaxseed, it will help you reverse any sickness or illness you currently have.

Don't stop educating yourself on this diet. Look for new foods to try out, read about why some foods are better than others, educate yourself. Be part of a Vegan community, talk to others for inspiration and information sharing, etc.

Here are some good videos I recommend watching all the way through. Each one of these videos gives you vital information every second that passes by and it will be life changing for you. I can't stress enough how important it is to watch every single one of these videos to the end:

Food That Kills - M.D. goes over why meat is so unhealthy to eat and why it should be completely avoided. The speaker is a male and used to think you needed meat for muscles and protein, but everything is explained there on why it's all a myth and why Vegans thrive.

Uprooting the Leading Causes of Death - M.D. goes how a Vegan diet reverses the top 20 leading causes of death in the US including heart disease, cancer, etc.

Forks over Knives - More evidence that eating meat is one of the worst things you can do, like smoking cigarettes. If you have Netflix you can look for this movie there.

Food, Inc - Really interesting movie about the truth of where meat products come from. You can also watch this on Netflix.

---

Hmm I think that about covers everything you need to know. Just make sure you read all the advice given here, follow them thoroughly, and be sure watch the movies and videos that are about an hour long each. You can watch them whenever you want, just be sure to watch them. Most of all, don't give up.

It was really easy for me, like I didn't have to think about "Omg I want to eat this meat so much!!" because after I had educated myself through those videos and other sources, and after I felt the results for myself, considering I feel much better than I ever have in the past, it was honestly so easy for me never to go back.

If you ever crave meat again, just eat the subtitute meat. It has the same taste if not better, the same nutrients plus more, and it's cheaper overall.

So anyway, have fun with this new diet.
