U have to learn how u will research in details about the project, the team, the potentiality and most importantly the use case and study the hype about the project

One more indicator: price chart show long downward trend, and price has been very stable at low range within recent months, with volume decreased, then stable too. Volume should be stable recent months, but there are significant volume to invest. Because there is stupid to invest in coins which have nearly zero volume per day. - Altcoins that are low priced with good marketcap

Everyone has their own opinion, but I would not invest in XRP in the long term, and instead of XRP I would invest in BNB and TRX.

It is not right to say that, because altcoins depends on bitcoin. If bitcoin can stay strong, altcoins will survive and grow. If bitcoin won't be able to do this, altcoins might collapse. In months to come till the end of this year, altcoins are good choices for investors, because we have not yet seen altcoin season. Nevertheless, bitcoin will still be a good option to invest, and hold till weeks closely to its halving time, next year.

Don't invest in anything, any crypto currrency if you don't accept risks at whatever levels at the beginning. Investment is a game, basically, with two sides: risks and opportunities. Sometimes, investors can take risks and get good returns back; but sometimes they take risks and get losses back. That's life and that's investment game. There is nothing, and no one can guarentee 100% that you will not get loss, and only get good returns with your investments.
Investment is always a risk , who does not risk, he does not earn. However, if you decide to invest in altcoins you need to be patient , because altcoin can fly to the moon a month after entering the stock exchange , and maybe a few years. I personally buy a silver coin every month and a few more altcoins appear in my portfolio.
Aside from Bitcoin you should invest on the fork created asset from Bitcoin. These are Bitcoin Cash, Bitcoin Gold, Bitcoin Private and Bitcoinz. Among these I would like to suggest you BTCP and Bitcoinz because these two are in very low price and soon to be market maker like Bitcoin gold and Bitcoin Cash. Also, I am suggesting you ETH and Ethereum classic.

Aside bitcoin, that should be altcoins then. You really need to make some good and serious research to find out some coins to invest on. First you should check the white paper for the project use case also the team behind the project, then find out about activeness of the their social handles.

even coins like that are also many pitfalls that can occur. do you know the last bitcoin pump was done? how bitcoin is pumping high and then down again. many traders are certainly stuck with this situation who thinks the market will continue to rise.

Presently I'm bagging ETH, TRX, ICX, XLM for long term. I've taken time to study those projects and decided to take calculated risk of holding for very long term. I understand crypto is volatile but I see great potentials in these projects. Hence the risk of holding those is lesser in my own opinion, do your own research.
Your next best option should be Ethereum if you are looking at very long term and a project that is not likely to fail in the long run. Don't just bag random alts because of hype, do proper due diligence. EOS, TRX, XLM, EOS are also great picks to do research on.
There is many options available in the market besides Bitcoin for long term investment. But in long term investment Bitcoin is most trusted. So whatever you do put most of your portfolio in Bitcoin. Rather than that you can put your money in high marketcap coins like cardano or ethereum or Nexo. This are good you also can invest in BNB in my opinion BNB is one of best hold for long time. And if you have some exctra money you can do some research and put some of the money in low cap coins. This kind of investment is risky but still worthy sometimes.
Besides bitcoin, Binance coin is the best choice for long term hold. Right now I am observing a big profit in Super Zero (SERO) coin too! But bitcoin should be the first choice always
Apart from bitcoin, if i would have to invest in altcoins then i will chose BNB and Ethereum beacuse both of these have large community which is continuously expanding and the chances of growth are very high.
If you want to put your money in long term investment then firstly I would suggest you Bitcoin. First put your 55-60% money in Bitcoin that the safest place to invest. Beside Bitcoin there is a lot of choices for long term investment. I would prefer put your money in some of the big cap coins in different categories. Put your money in some platform based token I would suggest ethereum Eos and cardano for that. You can chose some exchange based token like BNB or HT or BITMAX token. Other than than some mid cap coins like matic harmony also good to go. And put 10-15% of your money in low cap coins. And do some research on your own before investing.
