You answered your own question. The difference is that they still lack the infrastructure around them, they have almost no merchants accepting them outside of the crypto-sphere.
You could say that Bitcoin is slowly losing its dominance, especially when you look at the market cap of Bitcoin vs altcoins (ETH), but that has more to do with speculation than anything else imo.
I believe it is because of its value, when bitcoin started it no one even bothered to think of it as an investment opportunity but now everyone is getting hype of getting atleast 1 bitcoin which makes it very popular specially this year 2017.
I think it's not just because the value of bitcoin but rather the volatility that make people want to take opportunity of making money from this. If it's about value, there's also some of altcoins that have price far above bitcoin but rarely known by people.

Bitcoin is the most popular crypto currency in the world for the simple reason that it appeared before others (in 2009), all other crypto-currencies appeared later and were created as an alternative to bitcoin.
It is the first cryptocurrency and has the highest value among all cryptocurrency. Many people only know bitcoin and generalize that only bitcoin is the digital currency. Those who don't do further research about it would generalize something like that but for those who do, they know that it is just one of the thousand of crypto and the most popular because of its price, there are so many supporters from its community and deep pocket investors. Most of the businesses also who accept digital currencies only accept bitcoin.
Many AltCoins aren't scams... They are just projects that failed, but I believe the intention of their creators wasn't to scam the adopters, they want to make their coins increase its price, they want to see people adopting it, they put some different features on their coins which make them a bit different from Bitcoin, but people don't buy it... It's not their fault at all.
But I must agree there are many other AltCoins that are created with the solely purpose to scam investors.

I think bitcoin is the most popular cryptocurrency because it is first digital currency..The value is high & it is still rising day by day.Bitcoin has given people to grow with financial support.

I agree with you it is the first ever crypto currency ever created and bitcoin presence in the marketing is getting stronger and the support of investors is getting bigger.

I would say because Bitcoin is the first cryptocurrency ever made, so Bitcoin had a head start from the others. And of course being the oldest means being the most known cryptocurrency, this is attracting more trust because we don't really know who is satoshi nakamoto and there is no proof that he is using his Bitcoin for couple of years.
