probably this is due to the fact that bitcoin is constantly growing and everyone wants to make money on it and thanks to mass purchases the price is growing

I do think it is due to high demand in the market that causes bitcoin's price to grow even more. Bitcoins potential to grow is seen already that is why it hooked to many new comers that wanted to engage into bitcoin.
now the price of bitcoin is not so high. but this only now. I think we will see a price above 20000 in the future. bitcoin will definitely stabilizes and begin your climb to new heights. we just have to be patient. buy bitcoin now and wait.

Is price of bitcoin so high (compared to altcoins) because it is so much superior or is it just because it is THE coin - the original one.

Bitcoin is the basis of the entire market and despite the problems that are now easily solved in several altcoins, it is quite popular and has very good support. Therefore, even though it is expensive enough to invest in it, but it will bring in profit, if successful, much more of any altcoins and the risk seems to be justified. Demand and supply actually all comes down to this. People are willing to pay more than 8,000 dollars, so how much it costs.
