Yes. If there is no meaningful network maintenance, then bitcoin will be replaced by a more functionally viable platform. By "replaced," I mean a different platform will be more predominately used to engage in P2P transactions than the bitcoin platform.
You are right , but you need to see toward the nee nee things that is going daily improve in bitcoin will surely make it best then other , and no doubt that bitcoin is already more better and powerful than any other coin or altcoin is .
Here you can say every month new altcoins came and some of gone but here the bitcoin is in stable from the 2008 which is really a quality of king .
So here chances of replacing the bitcoin by another altcoin is only 1% or even less .

There was an attempt for the development but its just something that might just worsen the situation, there is a serious problem with the current version and those miners are pretty much wanting more of a decentralized system. They feel like they are being ignored which I think they are really. A little increase of blocksize I think won't hurt but instead they push the blockstream.
The fork can easily by FUD by individual who have some motives so we now know things are different these days than those before where users are only aiming to see bitcoin to be used by individuals. Today, the users are often aiming for profit.

Sooner it will be replaced.

Does it make sense to believe that Bitcoin could one day be replaced by another cryptocurrency, that is, a cryptocurrency that really does make Bitcoin obsolete?

Maybe, as we all know there are many alt coins that has different uses. Bitcoin is the first crypto currency thats why many are using it. Also, bitcoin has some problems that cant be resolve that other alternative coins can, and vice versa. We could not say as this moment .

I should have bought some altcoin back then, would have made quite a good ROI

At least I bought some now.

Since this debate is far from over, I guess the altcoin market has still a lot of headroom.
zimmah, seeing the lobster avatar by chance you know what happened to that zoidberg developer and his Louisd’or project?

In terms of what that bitcoin can be replace by the other cryptocurrency? is it if bitcoin will disappear or die is that what your trying to say? and if ever bitcoin will gonna die of course there must be a valid reason too. But if your asking not in how bitcoin will be gone, I don't think that bitcoin can be replace by another cryptocurrency because only bitcoin has the highest value in digital/virtual currency where the other cryptocurrency are no match for its price value. In short, that is not possible. Wink

There's no point to replace it.
I don't think that bitcoin can or should be the best crypto on all levels though. Let bitcoin do the one thing that it's best at.
Other coins will compete for the rest.

First thing it is called altcoin because it is not bitcoin.
Replacing it will bitcoin an altcoin?
Kind of hard to swallow and hard to imagine it. So example ETH will be the main crypto currency so what happens to bitcoin?
Just imagine it. Isnt it a little awkward?
I believe nothing can replace it. It made its grounds and it is to hard to break it.

There is a very very small chance by the current altcoins now in the market will replace bitcoins in future.Maybe future altcoins with good developers will make a altcoin that will eventually beat bitcoins in cryptocurrency world.
Majority of the alt coins who is having a good potential does have good developers and are having a good strong team and it is not a matter of building a stronger team or a better bitcoin,it is bringing in what is different in bitcoin and if you are successful in that you might have a good market share and volume, can bitcoin be replaced by another coin,it is highly doubtful.

I believe on the same thing. There are already so many resources invested on Bitcoin and there are many influential people willing to defend Bitcoin due to vested business interests...compared to any other cryptocurrency.  However, as in anything, nobody can really predict the future. One thing for sure is that this is a very competitive industry and any other altcoin is always ready to take the mantle leadership if there is a vacant one.

I don't think this will happen, at least not very soon. There are many attempts to compete with Bitcoin but with no success. ETH and Monero are not that bad but still without any chances to replace Bitcoin. The thing is that no other cryptocurrency hasn't succed to achieve such value and acceptance and to be useful in real world like Bitcoin.

Yes, of course, until now Bitocin still the main currency of cryptocurrency and it will not be possible there are other coins that will replace Bitcoin. Time ticking, business and innovation must continue to be done and it will be more interesting. Lest there where the saturation point will ruin everything.

at this rate it seems like t's already happening right now.

bitcoin is losing market share at a rapid rate.

I should have bought some altcoin back then, would have made quite a good ROI

To believe (e.g. to be certain) something like that does not make rational sense. To say that is a statistic probability makes much more sense. However, this has been discussed over and over again. In order for the cryptocurrency space to thrive, it would be most suitable if there were multiple coins at the top and not just one (as currently Bitcoin is). Nobody can say that either one will happen for sure; they would only be speculating.
Bitcoin for now is upgrading and its value increases dramatically so thinking that bitcoin would be replaced by other crypto-currencys thats imposibble for know. We all know that bitcoins value is depending to the support of people so many people continue to choose bitcoin than any other crypto-currency. That is the fact and when bitcoin becomes more popular many buisness will be open on accepting bitcoin so it may be the future ot bitcoin. It cant be replaced by any other. Because bitcoin is just starting to grow more.

Also because we are addicted of using bitcoin and use it rather than using any other currency we are unknown of.
This is the main factor bitcoin will not be replaced !

At some point, Bitcoin might be replaced by a similar currency, in terms of market capitalization. But Bitcoin has a huge user base and this is a big advantage.
Bitcoin is not ready to replace all forms of currencies and fiat money at the moment. The question perhaps is, will Bitcoin be replaced by a better version of it, or by something that is very different and revolutionary; Something that offers many additional features that Bitcoin lacks. There could be some new innovative currency that could have such properties, and that could replace Bitcoin

The empathized part is the key point here

It should be something really conceptually different and revolutionary. Just adding new features or fixing minor issues (and even not so minor) won't cut it. For example, Litecoin was the first altcoin out there so we had a pristine environment to evaluate its success and failure. It was basically the same Bitcoin only on juice. It confirms transactions 4 times as fast and has bigger block size at that (thus no transaction jams). So it should have overcome Bitcoin, but that didn't happen. It is obvious that being the first to appear comes bundled with great advantages which are hard to overcome

impossible in this century because when we take name of cryptocurrency then we talk about bitcoin first then we come to eth, doge and whatever and the best part is that we compare value of other crptocurrencies with bitcoin
The fact is you really cannot forecast a distant future but in the realm of things bitcoin cannot be replaced by another cryptocurrency, but you cannot really predict what the future holds for bitcoin twenty years from now.New currencies are coming but for the moment nothing will overtake bitcoin for a long time.

The answer is YES. Another trendy "e-currency" will arrise soon... Smiley
Some got the innovation power. I tend to belive knowing them all. Watched dozens. The key ingredients to dethrone Bitcoin include highest    throughput and some privacy concerns. However current mempool overloads seem to be orchestrated and there are mixing services available, accessible via TOR so this point doesn't really score.
At the end of 2017 I do exspect the scaling debacle to be resolved, just my feeling.
