People who are addicted to gambling have done crazy things as a result of their addiction. Nonetheless, I never imagined reading a story as unbelievable as this. It is the story of a woman who abandons her 4-year-old child after using him as collateral and sustaining huge losses. Firstly, I am shocked because it is the male gender who have been known to go to any lengths to satisfy their gambling addiction.  In addition, I wonder what would have moved the woman in this case to do this kind of thing. My assessment is that this is simply a case of irresponsible parenting and problem gambling. How do you think about this?

I read the article several times and I'm sure I didn't read any clear details about how that type of collateral is even possible.

Who's the one that takes the collateral? The owner of the said gambling establishment?

I'm sure that was against a law and no way the owners will accept that deal. If that woman has no money left but still wants to play, the supposed approach by the owners should be, they will ignore the woman and kick her out properly in the establishment. No money = no play, that was clear. There's no advantage for the casino owners in taking that child as collateral that's why I'm puzzled about how that deal became possible.

The woman is irresponsible and tired of the child but pretended to use the child as collateral. For the casino I guess they kept the child for safety as so many people are out there rich, but looking for children to help since they have none. She is a bad mother who is desperate of doing anything such woman should be arrested, she should also be deprived from seeing the child for a very long time to teach her some lessons .
Tired of her own child? I think that's a lame excuse that a parent can make. As a parent it was their obligation to take care of their children. I know it's hard to raise a child and sometimes parents get pissed off due to how the child behaves but they need to control their selves to not hurt their children because that's very wrong and they can go straight in the jail once other people find that out and report them to the police.

I think you are right that the casino owner just accepted the deal because they are also worried about the status of the child if the parent keep the child in their house. Maybe the parent will beat the child every time she goes home as a loser.

I think it's also the fault of the owner of that betting shop because why would they agree that a kid will be used as collateral? Sorry but they better be punished and close that shop because if not then there's a chance that they will do that again to other gambler or maybe they are also accepting drugs and illegal things there in exchange for a free bet. Now for the woman, you already answered your own question. What lead her to do it is irresponsible parenting/gambling.

This reminds me of the woman who leave her child inside the car only to play gambling at the betting shop nearby but it was worser than this because the child have died due to suffocation.

Based on the article, it's not yet confirmed that it's an actual collateral. It's like the bystanders were the ones to tell that to the reporter and police that the mother has left and likely made her son as a colletaral.

But the article says that, the mother just leave and left her son and it's just a rumor that the kid was a collateral. The policemen are still looking for some information about the woman and they're having hard time on gathering that because the kid can't talk.

My take on this is that the girl can't just accept the fact that she lost a lot and out of mind to leave her child.

You got a point there. Why would a casino accept a kid as collateral. That's a crime for both the casino and the parent.

A good mother don't normally leave a kid behind. So there must be something that pushes this woman.  Strange but it could be that the kid is not hers.
Also, a 4yr old kid but can't talk, its either the mother is really this crazy that she forgot to teach the kid?
That means that she's not responsible and is a bad parent. Oh, I've realized that too late, yeah a 4-year old and still barely talks. That's already late for talking and there's more of an alarming issue with the kid by having a late speech recognition.

Seems like this news is another sensationalized article to gather people interest.  I don't think that a license gambling establishment will allow such kind of thing.  I hate it when the writer put up this kind of news and making rumors as the base of their story.  No legal business will take people as a collateral especially those that are owned by the government.  This news is just a click bait, IMO.
It's a way to attract readers and many of us got hooked and those that are only reading the headline would end up having their thoughts already that why a casino/lottery allowed it.

Well, in a sense of the situation there, it's probably that the mother just left the kid without talking out of frustration with her losses.

If you read the news, the police and the journalist have not yet known what actually happened, if this is truly totally related to gambling or not.

Also it can remain the fact that only the woman can be able to answer the question.

That is Nigeria, people are frustrated in Nigeria with increasing poverty and low standard of living. We do not know what that woman is going through that led to that. People in a developed country may see it as another thing, but it may be lack of money and poverty that caused it. It is good to have money, but Nigeria is just one of the worst country that people are living below the poverty line.
Yes, that's true, we don't know what actually happened, but I also imagine that this may have an influence with gambling (even though it's not entirely clear in the published content), of course other variables could also have caused this as you said, for example the poverty that many countries suffer around the world, including Nigeria.

A woman has reportedly abandoned her 4-year-old son in a lottery shop in Enugu after incurring huge losses in gambling. The incident Sahara Reporters gathered happened at Moore House Street, Ogui in the state capital on Thursday. Residents of the area said the woman left her son in the Lotto shop after she incurred a huge loss she couldn’t offset. The little boy was later taken to Ogui police station when the wait for his mother was becoming endless. A police officer who confirmed the incident to SaharaReporters on Friday narrated how a little child was brought to the station by some persons who claimed his mother used him as collateral to play lotto.

This is a big shock to me and I have never thought this cam ever happen even though we become addicted to gambling to the extend of using all our funds to bet and losing it all. This is ridiculous and unacceptable with a big threat to the society seeing this kind of act among gamblers.
We need to be able to control our urge whenever we gamble because it do have effect on out lifestyle if we don't pay huge attention to  the way to participate in gambling. I still wonder why some persons are not able to control there gambling urge to the extend of using human to accomplish there bet urge to make winnings.

Firstly, I am shocked because it is the male gender who have been known to go to any lengths to satisfy their gambling addiction.

That's just a stereotype. Anyone can have an extreme level of gambling addiction whatever their gender is. It's even more dangerous sometimes when a female gets addicted because they can do things far more worse thaan a male that has gambling addiction also.

How do you think about this?

That women lost her sanity that she reached to a point that she used a child as a collateral. No one in the sane condition would do that to anyone. Authorities should arrest her and should be brought to a rehabilitating center to cure her gambling addiction. She might resort to do more worse things next tine if they still allow her to gamble.

Yes women don’t gamble as much as men which makes me wonder what desperate condition the lady must have found herself in. Like I said before, I don’t believe this is case of addiction. Unwanted babies are dropped at orphanages and doorsteps of churches everyday all over the world. There is still a lot of information missing from the story, where’s the father? Why has no one come to claim the child? Is the bet shop demanding for their money before releasing the child to his/her guardians.
The news is surprising, probably the woman is not longer with her husband, maybe they divorced or the husband is dead, because if the woman is with her husband then definitely the husband will ask for his son that's why I believe the woman might not be with her husband any longer. But what will those gambling shop do with the child? It's kind of funny will they continue keeping the child if anybody those not come for him? That's kind of funny, but like I said the woman should be arrested and the child should be collected from her and be taken to a orphanage house  I think he will be safe their because am sure something is wrong with the woman, she should be taken to Psychiatric hospital, maybe she is not mentally okay.
^One thing that comes up in my mind is the part that I bolded above and I am sure she is not mentally okay or being depressed about gambling.
There are a lot of people losing their minds because of gambling, because of the huge loss they cannot accept it and cannot move on. People like this should be in the rehabilitation center for further health assessment. A poor young child who has been the victim here, irresponsible parenting should have a sentence and could be in jail. That is why we should not chase losses in gambling and whatever happen don't let the urge in gambling eat your mind, you should always discipline yourself.

To be honest when I saw the post I was kind of shocked, seriously where I stay women don't really gamble, It rear to see woman gambling, but maybe they gamble with their mobile phone. I think this woman should be arrested and the child should be collected from her, I don't think she deserve to be a mother, how will a woman be careless or stupid to abondoned her son in a gambling shop, I don't know why people do crazy things just because they want to gamble, am not saying we shouldn't gamble but we should have limit, we shouldn't be really addicted to gambling, I can't just imagine how a woman in her right senses will abandon her son in a gambling shop.
There’s also a bad thinking in my culture if they saw women in the gambling table, and it’s bad to see them on this kind of situation where they failed to control their emotion and become more addict. This is an extreme addiction, I wonder what she is thinking but abandoning your own son just to compensate your debt is gambling is too inhuman. Gambling casinos should not allow this to happen again, they should anticipate a possible addiction and prevent it at all cost if they really care about the gamblers.

I don't know how a casino accepted a child as a collateral for the losses made in the casino, if it's a regulated casino then they couldn't do that if I am not wrong and the girl also has severe addiction which made the girl to do anything for the urge of betting. One who doesn't have money shouldn't be allowed to gamble at all and ofcourse these kind of rare incidents will not happen everyday.

In this article does not detail the story that happened before, why the woman could have a huge loss that she could not bear. and why the lottery shop could accept a toddler's guarantee, this is the question on my mind.
So from my point of view, in conclusion, the first fault lies with the lottery shop. however, Mother's actions are totally unacceptable. he had the heart to abandon his son just because of the desire to gamble and make the child as collateral.

This woman's actions are truly despicable, and have very bad morals. regardless of the addiction that causes him to be unable to think rationally.

Gambling is a legitimate business in Nigeria, the casinos and bet shops are very much patronized. I do not think the woman from the article has a gambling addiction. I believe she was trying to make some quick cash to pay her bills, and ended up incurring more debts. The lotto shop is not entirely innocent in this case, their mode of operation is unprofessional. How can they allow customers to stake games and not pay first or immediately. And accepting a child as collateral? It’s unheard of!

So everything is based on what people said to the police not the actual information which is yet to find so we can't conclude anything because we even can't be sure that kid is her child or someone's. But As I asked how the lottery or casino allowed someone to make bet before getting money from them or how they can accept the kid if the bettor refuse to pay or whatever, she should be reported to the casino police by the government itself before making any deals.

This reminds me of the thread about history of gambling where a situation like this also happen. I am quite curious as to how this person able to gamble in that gambling shop when that person is with her child. If I am the owner of that shop then I wouldn't let anyone gamble when they brought their child along in that place just to leave the child or used as collateral after huge losses. It is also too unfair for the child to be used as a collateral when the child has nothing to do with the huge losses.

Well there's no differentiate between male or female when it's about gambling, either male or female can get addicted same like they have lust. The child isn't used as collateral, but she just abandon him and that's make the casino think she will return to pick up her child. But actually the woman didn't return and she seems okay to let her child to be with the casino. It's a bad parenting from the woman, I feel bad for her child since he might have a tough life considering his mother can't control herself.
It's too unfair for the child to be involved in his mother's addiction and be used for her own that’s why there is a need to strengthen laws in family planning so only those responsible individual can start their family. When we start a family we must know our responsibilities and letting go our addiction is a top priority. If only people will be smart enough to be responsible in their actions there will be no abadoned child or children needing to work as young as they are or in the streets asking for foods.

I wonder what her intention was, maybe that the child should be held by the gambling shop to repay the equivalent of the money lost in labor.

If I'm to preempt the mind of the woman, she probably would be thinking it is just for a while that the child would be let free by either someone around to bring him back for her while she makes promise to pay the debt gradually. She could be shy and thinking the operator of the lotto stand won't take it lightly with her and so she has to act that way. I don't think she genuinely wanted to use the son for collateral, not that. This news I think from the link happened in enugu, Nigeria and Nigerian woman in her right senses won't use a baby for lotto collateral or the news fact is not properly disseminated, maybe the woman had a friend or someone close there that could bring the baby back to her before negotiation for payment would begin. So I don't believe the news of using the son for collateral on lotto gambling.

The fact that the woman thought of leaving her sone there just so she can make some payment arrangements first is nuts. If you don't have the money, you shouldn't gamble to begin with, but the woman still took her chance and that is the result. No matter the angle you view this news from, that woman is still wrong and she is not in her right mind. She deserves to get stripped off the custody of her son that's for sure, so as to serve as a hard lesson for her.

More females are actually falling into gambling addiction. Gambling addiction chooses no gender and it could happen if we will allow gambling to take control of our lives but the worse thing is, when we are risking our loved ones' lives. We should not put their lives at risk regardless of how badly we fall for gambling. The child might really have a tough life if his mother won't change.
