Some Casinos are just plain fraudulent. So this woman visited a casino, play slot and won $43million. She took a selfie with the amount displayed on the machine. The casino saw it and told her to return the next day so they could talk about the winnings. Next day she returned. Story changed. She was told the machine had malfunctioned and therefore it was what was responsible for the winnings. They went ahead to offer her a complimentary steak dinner. I got so livid reading this story.

Isn't this just the stupidest reason not to give her her winnings?

this is pure fraud, the lady won for real and honesty but the casino owners don't want to pay a penny of the lady's winnings because they definitely don't have as much money as the lady won. supposedly for a country that legalizes gambling, this kind of thing can be reported to the police because all the evidence has been collected and there is no fraud that the woman is doing, the one who cheats is the owner of the casino.

Couldn't they have known that their so-called machine was faulty before letting gamblers use it?
How could they do this to her?

As I said, casino owners don't have that kind of money so they never have any intention of paying out the big winners. it's just their excuse that the machine is broken, fraudsters should be punished and their gambling business should be shut down.

If she goes to the court, then I am not sure whether she'll get any of the winnings. Is it even possible to win $43 million from a single slot machine?

Well, apparently, to this day, it has not.

Top 10 Biggest Slot Machine Wins Of All Time

The largest prize was $14.3 million.

BTW, this incident happened way back in 2017, in case no one has noticed it yet.

Well, I think the incident is shocking enough for us to discuss it.

Apart from that, I agree that the woman should be offered serious compensation, not a fucking steak, LMAO.

How did her body got numbed?

Does seem like she inhaled something or someone just injected her with a substance and then when she wakes up all excitement is gone. Life is indeed unfair for this woman. $43M is not something that a casino is willing to give. It's the worse that could happen to someone who almost got everything in this world and then in just a blink lost it all.

She doesn't have a companion at that moment who can take care of what she won too.

It was a fishy reason, and there is something behind the story. That is a huge amount, and no matter the slot malfunction, they should still have given her some sort of damage pay or a bigger amount on it as it is their duty to make sure the slot machine is working properly. That selfie could be proof of winning, so she should try to pursue it until she can get bigger than the amount that was given to her. If I were in her situation, for sure, I would ask the owner for a letter that was signed by both parties saying that you won it, but I need to go back the next day so that I can really hold them accountable.

If she goes to the court, then I am not sure whether she'll get any of the winnings. Is it even possible to win $43 million from a single slot machine? When we play in a casino, we are forced to abide by the terms and conditions. The casino can just argue that the win happened as a result of machine malfunction and they will go bankrupt if they give out such a large reward. In the end, the most probable thing going to happen is that the casino will settle matters out of the court with the winner. Katrina Bookman may end up with a few hundred thousand USD at the most and a sizable chunk will be eaten by her lawyer. So in case things go well for her, she may end up richer by around $100k.

BTW, this incident happened way back in 2017, in case no one has noticed it yet.

Completely heard-breaking, I could not sleep for days after such a negative experience.
Another reason why provably fair gambling should be the standard in the future, they basically turned this situation into a "word-against-word" one.

Have you ever noticed that when a machine malfunctions is usually for people who allegedly won millions of dollars to be given little bit or nothing at all?
It is never the opposite way. When would a resort in Las Vegas call a gambler to their room because the 10$ they won earlier were actually 100 million and invite them to go down the reception to receive their cash?  Roll Eyes

It's always the way to deceive customers, if the said woman lost 10k dollars as a result of the malfunctioned machine the casino won't say a thing about it. The market is quite managed by some dubious people who don't care about the feelings of others. Imagine quenching the happiness, the woman had in her after seeing such an amount, to a sad qualm. It'll be difficult for her to forget such an experience and the trauma may leave her to become fearful of going to casinos. Adding insult to her injury they offered her few dollars that's not humanly in any form. The managers of the Casino are ruthless for handling the dispute in such a disdained manner. They've got no respect for her and even the court shouldn't have kept the case pending till now. The woman and the casino are expected to reach out to an agreement and she get paid for the inconveniences. Not necessarily the jackpot, but something better than the piece of $2 written on the ticket. Finally, she needs a strong lawyer.

Of course this is nothing but a cheap way for the casino to avoid paying the jackpot price. And since the casino must have developed deep ties with the gambling commission, and probably with some money involved as well, and they're also up against an ordinary gambler, they were able to just took the player for a fool. How I wish the player sued the casino for this modus and see how the courts would decide the case.

This is a wake up call to gamblers. The casinos are just interested in taking away your money. The moment you are winning big, they have a hundred reasons not to pay you.

Isn't this just the stupidest reason not to give her her winnings?

If you pay close attention to the article, you will see that the casino followed the laws so much and that the new york gaming commission confirmed that the machine had problems, so the casino was not giving excuses for not paying, they complied with the elections, about the invitation what they did to the lady, I think they were just being nice to the lady in an attempt to show the lady that even though she hasn't won millions the casino still treats her well and that she can keep playing at the casino, these things don't happen all days of someone making money and discovering that the machine was having problems and canceling the gains

Couldn't they have known that their so-called machine was faulty before letting gamblers use it?

they couldn't do that, in physical casinos they have cameras that record everything and inspections and investigations are carried out, physical casinos follow very strict laws, unlike online casinos

How could they do this to her?

Seriously, you're really asking this question, we can't accuse the casino of anything, in the article it says well that the new york gaming commission confirmed that the machine has problems

It was probably simpler to tell her a lie about the machine malfunctioning than to disclose the truth because I picture the casino going out of business after giving the woman her earnings. How do you keep the machine going when you know full well that it is broken makes this story cringe-worthy.

I believe that the regulators ought to establish a team that visits physical casinos on a regular basis to look for machine malfunctions and to penalize operators that continue to use problematic machines.

I really can't fathom what the feeling of that lady when she was told that the machine malfunctioned, hence she will not get any of that juicy millions. Perhaps the best thing is to file complaint against the Jamaican gambling regulatory board for this mishap.

Yeah, in any case, maybe she learn her lessons and probably playing on some other casinos now because of her bad experience with Resorts World.

I guess it is in the ToS that if the machine malfunctioned, the winning is voided, but still that is huge money to won and it could really be a life changer.

Katrina Bookman was playing the slots at the Resorts World Casino in Jamaica, Queens when she secured what would have been the largest slot machine jackpot in US history - $42,949,672 (£35.4m). She took a selfie with the machine to mark the moment, and later said her whole body went 'numb' when she saw the life-changing figure. Bookman was told to come back the next day to discuss her winnings, but when she asked an employee what she'd be walking away with, he responded: "You didn't win nothing." The New York State Gaming Commission said Bookman’s machine had malfunctioned, and that she'd actually won just $2.25 (£1.86).The machine had a disclaimer stating 'malfunctions void all pays and plays', and as a result the commission said that they were required by law to give Bookman only what she'd actually won.

Was surprised by the response by one employee on her? I don't think that any machine in the floor is malfunction, if it did then the casino are not going to install it right away and fix it. Or if someone plays on that machine and notice that something is not right, maybe she/he can call any of the staff and tell that the machine is not right.

We have RW here and I've seen people winning huge jackpot and being paid. They are even given a free room so that they can be paid in private at their comfort and then they can go back and play again.

That's just pure bullshit.
If reverse was to be the case what would they have done? If it was a customer that played and lost his/her $42m to the machine would they have inspected the machine in question?

That's the problem with casinos that don't have enough resources but just want to keep running the company so that they can keep draining money from their customers or from gamblers that use their service.

At least they could have compensated her with some cash even if it's just $5000 from the $42m that would have been better.
it is what you said that matters here , how would they reacted if the players lose all their money while they can even took out that machine and bring to garage than letting it sit there letting players deposit and lose while denying when they won?

this means everything in gambling can happen in favor of the team and owner but against the players.

Was there anything concerning about malfunctioning machine on their ToS?
Maybe was there any means that shows she was told of the malfunctioning machine before she went ahead using the machine to gamble. Well I noticed indecency towards this casino company they should be labeled scammer, maybe they felt she knew not her left or right to fight against her right towards her winnings and I strongly believe, if she present her evidence they would definitely pay off those winnings accordingly.

Not just Katrina Bookman. Jerry Rape and Veronica Castillo had the same situation, casino says the machine malfunctioned after they hit the jackpot. The life-changing moment only lasted for minutes. The casino says the machine is only capable of a certain amount just like in Castillo's case the maximum jackpot is just $20k. Upon knowing these cases, I'm certain, I'm not gonna try to play even once on those machines in the future, in any place.

This alone tells me the casino can choose never to pay anyone on any jackpot win thanks to their fraudulent disclaimer and this is a casino to stay away from!! And how the hell does she leave the premises without a confirmation win from the casino to tie them down for what the owe the lady. Regardless, with a good lawyer she can definitely fight for her winnings or atleast a fat pay check as compensation if they settle outside court.
If i were the girl then i wont really be letting these things to be ending up on eating a stake dinner. It isnt really just worth for you to deal up on what they had said and believe on what they had claimed.

You could also able to fight or sue them out basing on the situation where they didnt really put up some any agreement or something before you do live on the vicinity.

The wrong part of the girl or woman had done is that she didnt ask for some words or write ups and she do let that it would be passing by a day where lots of things
that could be done on that time frame which is really a one big mistake.

Wow! What nonsense of an excuse is that,  if the so called machine had some kind of malfunction why didn't they put atside or correct it, now Someone has won such huge and lifechangig money thats when the nonsense about some errors came out.  Just imagine, what if the case was to be  vice versa  and that lady lost that £34.2m, would anyone here story about disclaimer malfunction no i supposed.  I just feel they weren't expecting anyone to win such funds  and now that it has happened they lack the funds to pay so instead they bow out with a really nasty excuse of a fault occurring in the machine.

If we look at that situation and they make that as a reason its not the problem of the woman winner why he win that amount its their problem why their machine got broken if it really is, so they still need to pay her winnings for sure its not written on their rules that once their machine break they not pay the winners. So this is total insane reason from the casino.
