I'd sue the casino for telling me that. They should just give her winnings as they've acknowledged her win during that particular moment. But then again, maybe that casino doesn't have much money left which I doubt so they're declining her winnings.
It's certainly stupid to say that she did win nothing and just had given a steak as a consolation. I'd even decline anything they offer except the actual amount or near to that amount less taxes.

Katrina Bookman was playing the slots at the Resorts World Casino in Jamaica, Queens when she secured what would have been the largest slot machine jackpot in US history - $42,949,672 (£35.4m). She took a selfie with the machine to mark the moment, and later said her whole body went 'numb' when she saw the life-changing figure. Bookman was told to come back the next day to discuss her winnings, but when she asked an employee what she'd be walking away with, he responded: "You didn't win nothing." The New York State Gaming Commission said Bookman’s machine had malfunctioned, and that she'd actually won just $2.25 (£1.86).The machine had a disclaimer stating 'malfunctions void all pays and plays', and as a result the commission said that they were required by law to give Bookman only what she'd actually won.

Some Casinos are just plain fraudulent. So this woman visited a casino, play slot and won $43million. She took a selfie with the amount displayed on the machine. The casino saw it and told her to return the next day so they could talk about the winnings. Next day she returned. Story changed. She was told the machine had malfunctioned and therefore it was what was responsible for the winnings. They went ahead to offer her a complimentary steak dinner. I got so livid reading this story.

Isn't this just the stupidest reason not to give her her winnings?
Couldn't they have known that their so-called machine was faulty before letting gamblers use it?
How could they do this to her?
It is a scam obviously, any casino that knew that one or several of their slot machines were not working correctly will simply not allow anyone to play with them and will begin the process of figuring out what is wrong with them, they are just using this as an excuse to not pay the legitimate winnings of this woman, in this forum we remind people all the time to only gamble at online casinos with good reputations so this does not happen to them, but such advice should also be applied to regular casinos, and this is the perfect example of why that is the case.
We know that it does really give out that overall different experience when we do play a slot machine physically compared when you do just simply deal with those online slots which its not still an assurance that you

would be get paid off with huge winnings even if you do deal up with online but its true that it would really be just sensible that you would be sticking into those known or reputable sites which is really that understandable or something that normal for a person to do so.

It is really scam obviously, if the machine is broken or doesnt function well then why they do let that women do play freely? They arent making some complaints since they are the ones who do
make money but on the time where huge hit happens then this is where their reasoning would come out.

This is very annoying for this kind of treatment to the woman because it's just irrational for this to be generally accepted. Although I can blame the casino too because it look obvious that the machine had malfunctioned for the woman to win such a big amount of money that is unbelievable to happen on a normal ground. Since it's just a machine and it do not have a concrete evidence to back it up in order to fill the case to court.
This shouldn't have been accepted but I am still thinking possible it could be for someone to win a big amount of money if the machine does not malfunctioned.
Whether the casino was honest or not then there's nothing we can do since they had made out their negotiations in between the women and the company itself. If she had just dealt up with on the claims that it was broken then it is really just sad that she had just spiked and mind off about change of her life since shes already a millionaire but ending up that it was really just a dream given on this circumstances.
Companies shouldn't allow broken machines if ever this was true and not really some excuse just not to pay up that huge win.

This is fucked up. I am just sensing racism on the casino winning issue. Probably because the lady came Africa (black) woman that was why she was denied to collect her winning. A casino machine never malfunction to a gambler. If a casino machine malfunction like that then how many gamblers have loss and won casino slot games that have complained. I have not heard any complain from gamblers like this one before. But all is well.

All i can say is that What the f*ck is that kind of reasoning? If it was broken in the first place then they should not play someone into that machine. This is rather just a bullsh*t reason or alibi because they dont
want to pay up that amount to the winner. The wrong thing on which that woman had done is that she had agreed to leave the vicinity and comeback for another day.She could really be able to contest it out
if the machine is broken or not.It is really just sad that $35M goes to nothing or a buck or couple which i cant really just believe such situation to happen but well im not surprised that Gaming commission
does really receive some bribe. Cheesy

In any serious country, such a case would certainly cause the casino to permanently close its doors.
Whether due to the obligation to pay the prize (without having the money) or fines and lawsuits filed against the casino by the person who won and also by local authorities.

It is simply unacceptable to refuse to pay the premium on the basis of such a response.
Did anyone other than the casino itself testify that the machine was out of order? Was this done in front of the woman who won, in front of some authority or someone "neutral" to this situation?
Obviously not.

We know that in most illegal casinos these machines really have a problem, but usually the problem is intentionally implanted to rob people.
Then, when there is a "problem with the problem" of stealing money, they still deny it.

Unfortunate!

I hope that this woman does not give up her rights and that the authorities give the case the attention it deserves.

The mechince being faulty is non of the woman's problem, since the machine already displayed that she won and she is having evidence, then they should pay her the money, next time they should always make sure they carry out maintenance on their machine frequently. The woman shouldn't accept the dinner, she shouldn't take it easy with them, she should make sure she collect her money.

The casino is just very stupid, how will someone win that kind of money and the only thing you can use to compensate the person is steak dinner, I think they should just plead with the woman and maybe give her half of her win or reasonable amount of money if she will accept their offer, but the only thing the can offer is just steak dinner.
The problem is with her actually because she didn't observe her surroundings first if there is a sign or what but he just play the game directly. I think this can be the same to those who gamble online blindly where they will experience a problem later on.

I know for some, they will blame the owner of the slot machine because why the heck they do this instead of replacing the whole thing? But, maybe that wasn't really their priority. Maybe they have other business (can be a restaurant) since it is said that the woman is offered by a dinner. The only put a slot machine there for their customers to have something to pass the time while waiting for their orders. If we are serious of making cash then we should go on a real casino, since they have more benefits there and we are sure that the machines are working fine or they are legit/fair.

The casino should lose their license in this scenario, if the regulator actually had any teeth and were capable of doing their job properly. There should be no "get out" clause like that or they can literally say that any single jackpot that a machine shows up is null and void, thus defeating the whole point of playing towards a jackpot from the customer perspective. It's not only the casino at fault here, it is the government enforcement agency that are clearly powerless to do anything against fraudulent actions of a casino. By letting them get away with it once, it will just be easier for them to get away with it again in future and might even be abused more in future.

Unfortunately, this happens a lot more than we know. Casinos don't mind taking your money, but as soon as you win big, there's all kinds of excuses. There was a man that took one of the big three to court in the UK over a multi million pound bet, I believe it was a sport bet. They refused to pay initially. I do believe he won in court though.

I can't imagine what it feels like to see that you've won some big money, legitimately, and then get rejected the withdrawal. If you take them to court, you'll likely win. However, it's the hassle of that, and I suppose they're hoping you take the easier route, and likely will attempt to settle outside of the court for much less than the actual winnings.

It doesn't make sense that the slot machine didn't work while the woman won with the proof in the photo meaning it was an obvious win but the land casinos confirmed under the pretext the machine didn't work and it was like there was a problem being hidden with the reason the machine was off.

To me this is clearly cheating with the option of offering a steak dinner, no compensation whatsoever, even if it is half of the winnings, do they not want to lose big?
Does that mean that after the steak dinner, the woman didn't get any money after that?

We can't just conclude it all because it's just a mere story, if that there were video for it then we would justified all every. I think something more, do we know either the company have up to that amount to pay her?
Yes, there where similar story over a man in Lagos, Nigeria that won LOTTO but wasn't able to pay him it happens that they offer him some peanuts out from his winning but he refused and sue them to court.
So let us compare it to this lady's case as well. But the painful thing is that they knew about this machine why did they leave it over there to allow customers to use the machine.
I know this could be very hard for her, but she still had all evidence if she would like to further claim about her winning or sue them to court with all her evidence.

If it was settled properly on the court then it means the casino really did prove that the machine malfunctioned. Although the complete details and information weren't detailed, being able to settle it in court then they really showed strong proof for that. Aside from that, the ticket was printed out with the correct winning amount therefore what is stated on the screen is where the fault and error happened.

I doubt a luxury casino such as Resorts World Casino in Jamaica, Queens will ruin their reputation just for that case.

Although my assumption will depend if the court settle the case properly without an under-the-table agreement or any related to corruption just to win the case in favor of the women. Because for me, if that casino is not true to its word, they should bribe the women instead as offering a dinner will make them seem to do dirty plays in the public.

I'm not buying that thing if they would have told me there's a disclaimer if I don't see it on the machine then I am claiming my winnings plus a photograph from her phone should be enough as evidence that she won. They better turn that thing off or pay the winning prize and not just a one meal for a day. That's a total bullshit on their part!

What else could be these casino be doing to someone who wins the jackpot? I'm sure it's not the first time this was happened but we can't do anything about it. That would stress me for life if they did that to me knowing that I've win a jackpot but unfortunately I am not.  Grin

I am not surprised by the level of such type of casinos. That is why when playing in an offline casino it is always a good idea to be prepared well and got to play only on the capital of gambling,in Las Vegas.I am sure there are not that many stories,in fact I don't know any in Vegas that can cheat you like this by looking you in the eye.It was the error of the woman who agreed to come tomorrow, she should have insisted I want my money now or at least to ask for a contractual agreement before leaving the casino. When you win that huge amount it is only natural to ask about such signing by a notary.

In these plain fraudulent casinos only the law can make them pay in any way.

Now this is just a fraudulent scheme devised by the gambling company in order to evade liability of paying her. Good thing the woman has a photo of her winning the slot machine as a solid proof for her efforts in winning. I do think that it must be illegal for the gambling company to claim that a slot machine malfunctioned that caused someone to win on it. Regardless, she still won and she must be entitled to the prize.

Personally, I very much feel outraged by this news. I do hope the woman sues the hell out of this gambling company. Not only is she entitled to her prize but also for damages for this scheme made by the gambling company.

This is pure BS. How can a person prove that a machine malfunctioned? Isn't that the responsibility of the gambling company to maintain these machines regularly? They should be estopped on claiming that it malfunctioned AFTER someone won the jackpot prize.

It's easy for the house to claim that the apparent win is a mistake or a malfunction on the machine's part. But if the roles were to be switched, the woman would be extremely persecuted by the casino, they may even press charges against her. In that regard, I think the woman should file a case against the casino to force them one way or another to pay her the supposed winnings or damage fees if ever. Casinos have become very confident these days especially live ones in taking advantage of their customers' already weak stance, thus situations like these are more common. What an insult by the way, to tell her that she only one 2 euros and then offer her a dinner instead of actually giving her the winnings.

Casinos can come up with all kinds of reasons to prevent winners from getting their big money wins and we know they really can do it. It is the casinos' fault for not checking the slot machines that someone wins big money but the casinos don't even acknowledge it.

The woman also couldn't do much even though she had a selfie photo in front of the slot machine and her winnings earlier. The courts should be able to support the woman because there is real evidence of the woman's selfies, but we also need to know that casinos can bribe people in court to support casinos.
