I found this interesting.  In a released paper, the NSA was interested in anonymous electronic cash as early as 1996, back when the Internet first began to explode as a consumer tool.

http://groups.csail.mit.edu/mac/classes/6.805/articles/money/nsamint/nsamint.htm

They explicitly define electronic cash as needing to be untraceable, because a cash-to-cash transaction is inherently untraceable.

In this paper they make reference to "the bank" several times as the one who verifies all transactions because at the time it was either unknown or unreleased how to successfully create a system where a trusted third party wouldn't be necessary.

To this end, I think their dream has finally been realized as of 2014.  Monero is, in fact, the first true electronic cash.  Bitcoin may have been revolutionary, but it was not "electronic cash" due to its public ledger.

It makes much more sense to refer to Bitcoin as the first trustless electronic ledger, and Monero as the first trustless electronic cash.  In fact, as we go forward I think this is something we should highlight and make reference to.  A bold product needs bold (and accurate) claims, and I think that's what we have here.

I know this topic has been covered before, but I'm asking the Monero community to please consider changing the name to something more descriptive of what the coin does.

Many of the most recognisable brands in the world don't have descriptive names, and are awash in a sea of competition. "Apple" makes computers, "Nike" makes sportswear, "Amazon" sells stuff online, "Ford" makes cars, "Verizon" is mobile phone service provider. Even amongst software projects "Firefox" is a browser, "Skype" is for video calling, "Dash" is for offline software development documentation search, "Eclipse" is an IDE.

If everything had a descriptive brand name you'd use your "SlickComputers" laptop to buy a pair of "AwesomeSneakers" shoes from "OnlineRetailer" before hopping in my "AmericanCars" truck and making a call using the "LargePhoneNetwork" network. Then when I'm on my computer I can fire up "OpenSourceBrowser" before using "VideoCaller" to check-in with my wife, all while the convenient "DarkDocumentation" system helps me code in "CodeWriterEnvironment".

Zombie comment, but I just came across it.

Ironically enough, any brand name that actually seems descriptive implies poor quality in current society.

Knowing nothing else, who would you rather build your custom high-end gaming rig: QualityGamingComputers Inc or Raptor Inc?  I just made both of those up, but for some reason the random dinosaur name seems to be the most trustworthy because they are "too important" to take time to pander to you.

Psychology is a weird thing.

So we should probably change Monero's name, but to something actually *less* descriptive.

Fuck it, let's call it Raptor.

You could always go on IRC and ask him any questions, #monero-dev.

Yes and if you don't have an IRC client you can use the web UI: https://webchat.freenode.net

Andreas A. is asked about bitcoin's fungibility : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ak1iojpiHpM&feature=youtu.be&t=33m9s

He thinks it is an issue worth addressing. Perhaps it is more important than "The Block Size" debate.

There's no need to wait for official 0.9 binaries if you're developing something, you can go to Github and compile the latest yourself, its quite stable for me.

+1

I've been running moneroblocks.eu with the database version since this was still in tewinget's branch. And the new Master is running in two other PCs without a problem.

yeah, honestly I'd be interested if anyone in the active circle of Monero is running release binaries.

ROLL CALL!

I am running compiled source, built ~3 days ago.

Hi people!

I can't see Fluffypony's posts here for a quite long time. Each monent I ask, somebody gives me a proof links to github, that Monero developing is being undergone significant progress. Many people report they have built Monero with new mmap database and it works quite fine...

But...

It is still beta, I mean new Monero 0.9. When it will be released officially? If it is almost ready, what's the "tiny" problem that lasts for several months?

The main thing that is being worked on now is adding the code for the hard fork (for improved privacy as discussed in MRL-0004) that will occur in six months. There are a few minor issues that have been reported but nothing that would hold up a release candidate build.

Fluffypony does post regularly on reddit and sometimes on forum.getmonero.org. I think he's just pretty burned out with the trolling and other bullshit on here (can't say I blame him).

Thank you for info, I've just read it MRL-0004:

https://lab.getmonero.org/pubs/MRL-0004.pdf

Good target for work. I want Fluffypony to post here his estimation on date for officilal Monero 0.9 release, and the procedure how to do hard fork mentioned above.
That's because I am working on some service depending on Monero and I defenitelly can't use current 0.8.8.6 version due to its huge virtual memory eating...

You can clone a newer version from github. I cloned it a few weeks ago (I believe my version is 0.8.8.7-release) and it's very easy on RAM. It's worked flawlessly for me.

junseth just criticized ring signatures on the Bitcoin Uncensored podcast, saying that Gregory Maxwell knows more about how this stuff works than the Monero devs. Smiley

When did Gregory Maxwell say "Monero won't work/won't scale"...?

He has said that it isn't compatible with the sort of UXTO pruning that Bitcoin can do, which is somewhat true (there are indeed a few tricky ways to make it work if you really want to). I've seen this on reddit and possibly elsewhere. It is also a bit disingenuous since he has also said that despite UXTO pruning, Bitcoin also can't usefully scale without going offchain, which is why he opposes increasing Bitcoin's block size too much beyond the current 5-7 tps). In fact, if I'm not mistaken he may have suggested lowering the block size, but I'm not positive of that.

I don't think he has ever said Monero "won't work".

UXTO pruning provides only a linear advantage over no pruning while the blockchain growth until the currency, be it Monero  or Bitcoin, becomes close to mainstream is, to a good approximation, exponential. Scaling basically depends on a continuation of Moore's, Kryder's, and Nielsen's Laws at an exponential rate of growth greater than the exponential rate of growth of the blockchain. Monero has the ability to scale with Moore's, Kryder's, and Nielsen's Laws.

Is Monero compatible with Zerocash?

You can fork anything in if people support it.

Quote
Would Monero + Zerocash have advantages over Bitcoin + Zerocash?

It would have the variable blocksize and the disinflationary money supply for permanent mining incentives. That latter is probably never, ever changeable in Bitcoin.
