Most people using Bitcoin do not use the official GUI. They use Electrum, Multibit, Mycelium, Breadwallet, Blockchain.info, Coinbase, Circle, and I'm probably forgetting some. These are all third party product which demonstrate the strength of the Bitcoin ecosystem.

For today I can confirm there is a working DB implementation. It just does not exist. Officially. Which is pretty weak advertising to be honest. Your product has favors above competition. Crippling on purpose?

Have you seen http://planet-capital.com/ ? Looks like they are planning to support trading multiple crypto-currencies. Perhaps you could collaborate and add XMR support to their platform.

I thought onemorexmr had a viewkey thing working. It was incredibly slow - he forked it from someone else in #monero-dev.

No idea. I'm not trying to create something that scans the entire blockchain for outputs (that's a job for Simplewallet), rather selectively decodes by output (and soon by TX) on an offline basis, using information from the block explorers for example.

You will be able to download one of these packages and have the node already packaged with it, and have it not require a huge amount of RAM.

In that light, I favor the idea that one Monero page mimics bitcoin.org such that interested people (knowing Bitcoin) feel cozy when looking into Monero. I would do it myself but facing strong time limits (day job).

Having said that, a GUI is crucial for your average joe as getting into crypto should be as seamless as possible without much difficulty. I'm not convinced rushing an official GUI will be all that useful if there are other core features that should be explored and implemented firsthand.
