the market cap is not an absolute index of the coins value.
currently XRp has a much better sentiment around it, ETH is associated with scam ICOs and those ICOs are panic selling thier funds and driving the price to the ground , thus the market cap difference
I think that market cap isn't the most important for coin. I think it's better to study their blockchains and understand that on ERC-20 are based hundreds of successful projects rather than on Ripple.

This is because ripple have more dominating volume than ethereum, so it makes ripple overtakes ethereum as the number 2 coin on cmc.
but I'm not comparing which is the best, because both of these coins have advantages and disadvantages.
I can't say if who's better because both of them have different attributes in each other and the price is quite different too. So, what would you choose if you have to choose between them? Most ICO these days are using ethereum as payment so basically is kind of useful that they it is always on the second rank of all cryptocurrency.

I don't think XRP better than ETH in term of applications.whole market just kept going down last week, XRP is the only coin that price did not drop as much as others. and still remain big volume, so it take ETH's place. but I don't think it would hold that for long time.
