I have an odd question for -ck
As the network grows, do you expect to have a decline or increase in users and hashrate?
So far since last adjustment the network has gone from 540PH to approx 700PH.
I mean I have a couple little USB lotteries running under my desk... *Crosses fingers for the next 1.3 million days*
I honestly don't know. So far the total hashrate and number of users has gradually grown but it's hard to know if that's time and reputation or paralleling the growth of the network. There's no doubt home miners have almost no chance to make a profit doing regular pooled mining unless they have dirt cheap electricity, and that's both the reason I created the pool and why they come here I believe. Having said that, approximately 2/3 of the hashrate comes from rentals so the economics at work there are totally different and come and go far more than the continuous miners.
I think it's about time one of the small miners found a block too since all the recent ones have been hundreds of TH and more. They're the more exciting and fun block finds to me and other users.
Wow another 2 new blocks mined here. It's a good pool.. I recommend increasing the fee to 1% or 1.5% because u need to pay the servers..
0.5% is more than enough to pay for the servers, but I need to make more than 1 block per month to actually make a profit, which I am. It's not exactly a huge profit considering the time and effort that I've put into the pool, but then I got paid to write a lot of the ckpool code and the profits from this pool fund further maintenance and development of ckpool. It's also a very bare bones pool with no flashing lights, bells and whistles and I prefer maintaining that sort of service since it means I can concentrate on things I care about - the low level performance of the actual mining process. If I charged a higher fee people would probably expect more "features" from the pool and that's not going to happen with me as the administrator.
If the pool ever got larger and I earned more profit purely from solving more blocks, I would make the server higher power to cope with more users but maintain the low fee and bare bones nature of the pool. However the current server is good for up to probably 50PH and that's not going to happen any time at this rate.
