CCTV (China's Governmental Media) has just put up a 30 minute documentary on bitcoins
И комент на реддите от американца, рожденного в Китае.
I was born in Beijing, China, moved to the US when I was 6 years old, and currently study Advertising at SCAD in Savannah, GA. I still visit China every couple years or so.
I'm fluent in Chinese, French, and English, and I've owned a fair share of bitcoins since mid 2012 and litecoins since two months ago.
Here's what I thought of the CCTV Documentary from the perspective of someone who's originally from China, understands the culture, and owns bitcoins.
= Initial Reactions =
The documentary was fairly accurate, covered the basics of bitcoin, it's history, how mining works, and the prices.
The documentary seemed to be pro-bitcoin, and covered the story of a man who mines and has made some money doing so.
It is clear that the Chinese government (who does in fact censor, this I can confirm with first hand experience) has given Bitcoin the go-ahead.
CCTV is pretty big in Chinese news, and will be widely watched. Whether or not the citizens would be interested in a documentary about a currency is another story.
= Ramifications =
I believe we'll see more news coverage on BTC in China, as bloggers and various sources see the story, gain interest and begin to explore BTC. This is important because most Chinese internet users are heavy blog readers.
Many Chinese citizens are fairly technologically savy, especially in the younger age group. If they want bitcoins, they'll get them.
If China decides to adopt/promote bitcoin, that is a HUGE amount of new users (even if only a small percent who sees the broadcast decides to get bitcoins).
To Chinese citizens, the idea of a decentralized and PRIVATE currency would be a godsend to them. The challenge would be getting them to spend it on everyday goods as there is a lack of merchants in China.
= Predictions =
If the Chinese bitcoin exchange fairs well and plays it's cards right, it may even overtake MtGox as the major exchange by numbers alone.
Chinese companies will begin to produce cheaper and more powerful mining
The price will shoot up as citizens begin buying coins. However, it may fall later on.
Chinese hackers will realize how effective the denial of service operations were, and may attempt a similar attack.
The Chinese blackmarket may very well adopt bitcoin and begin selling goods and services on a platform. They may use Silkroad, or they might even start their own.
All said, I think that this is pretty big news, and we'll see some interesting things happen to Bitcoin in the coming days.
Just my two cents. I'd love to hear some comments.
