Sia Extension for the GNOME desktop

I have made an extension for the GNOME desktop that features folder auto-sync and some useful wallet features. I consider this a BETA, as there are still features I'd like to add and features to depends on the upcoming 0.5.0 to work properly (like files in sub-folders being displayed properly in the Sia-UI wallet). I have yet to fully stress test it. If anyone would like to test this thing before I put it up on extension.gnome.org that would be great!

This extension obviates, to some extent, the need to use the Sia-UI if you're running the GNOME desktop. It auto-starts siad, syncs the Sia folder in your home-directory (recursively) and indicates file upload progress and health (i.e. redundancy) of your files. Also, you can send funds and create addresses for receiving funds.

The code:

Screenshots:

I don't know how well it works, but it looks pretty great!

i will DEFINITELY be testing this next week - when i  have some time to settle a little ...

great work mate ...

According to my calculations with 1 GH/s I should hit a block every 2.5 days on average. Is this accurate?

Yeah I'm getting about 2.5 days. But, due to randomness sometimes you'll go a week or more without any blocks found, and sometimes you'll get 2 blocks or more on the same day.

Hi I'm very excited about the new release! I downloaded it and when I first tried to open it I got the message:

siad errored: Error: spawn ./siad ENOENT

Same, but with 0.4.8 beta

Usually that means 'siad' could not be found. Are you sure you are using a clean download?

Yes. Jan 9th for v0.5.0-rc1
Jan 19th for v0.5.0

And we're aiming for v1.0 in March.

What are the key improvements/milestones of the different versions?

Version 1.0 is going to have a solidified API which promises to preserve backwards compatibility until version 2.0, which is likely to be several years away. We are not planning on creating a version two unless there is a very substantial reason to do so.
Version 1.0 should also have stronger sybil attack protection, better host tracking, and will feature improved scalability.
Version 1.0 should also have software that only needs to be run every 6 to 12 weeks, instead of the every 2 weeks that will be required by v0.5.0
Version 1.0 will feature paid downloads in addition to free downloads.

Version 0.5.0 is going to have persistent files - instead of files being lost after 6 weeks, files will be renewed automatically. (but you need to run Sia at least every 2 weeks so it can do the renewing)
Version 0.5.0 is going to repair files when they fall below a certain integrity.
Version 0.5.0 has a series of usability fixes and user-interface improvements, including a file browser with folders in the UI.
Version 0.5.0 has some additional metrics, and overall improved/smarter core logic.
Version 0.5.0 does faster uploading, and has higher parallelism and speed for transferring files.
Version 0.5.0 features faster startup time, and faster blockchain download time.

Overall, I think the changes are pretty significant. Version 0.5.0 should be usable and practical for backing up your real data, and as long as you run the software every week, data should stay up permanently. We've chosen to keep the times tight for version 0.5.0 so that we can verify hosts are working in a live environment before switching over to 1.0.

The vast majority of the listed v0.5.0 features have already been implemented. We will be spending most of our time doing testing and code quality improvements starting Thursday.

Thanks for the update.

I'm assuming you guys (you and poloniex) will have everything all fixed up soon hopefully.

Looking very forward to 5.0 and glad to see the development coming along.

Yeah looks like everything is working now Smiley

Withdrawals, deposits, and trading should all be fully functioning. And, as was stated many time, no coins were ever at risk.

They probably lost them like the rest of us due to a "bug" in the wallet..

That's extremely unlikely. A lot of the wallet features we provided in v0.4.0 were directly requested by Poloniex, they wanted to be certain that coins could not be lost and we made certain that as long as they kept the original seed, coins could not be lost.

-----------------------
I am afraid the wallet is not syncing, we are indeed speaking with the coin developer and awaiting a solution, when the wallet is re enabled all deposits and withdrawals will be processed at once. Wallets are backed up regularly so we can recover everything if needed.

I apologize for the inconvenience.

----------------------

That's good to know. We're not sure why some wallets have infrequently had troubles syncing, but we're looking into it. If anyone else has had this problem, it would be great to see the logfiles, particularly gateway.log. We don't know what's causing the issue, and haven't run into it ourselves yet. Usually deleting the consensus folder is sufficient to fix the issue.

I notice that some new users are still thinking that they have no balance because it does not display before unlocking the wallet and I think the unlocking should only be done after the wallet is fully synced up. I realize this was meant to be a feature but from a practical standpoint perhaps that should be re-evaluated.

In v0.5.0 there will be a loading splash until 'siad' has finished loading. If you unlock the wallet while syncing, it will take time for the balance to catch up but I haven't seen anyone complaining about that. Also, it will no longer display a '0' in your balance, instead will use '---' to indicate that the wallet is locked. Maybe we should just display a lock icon.

I do believe that the UX has been changed a bit since v0.4.8, we haven't released in a while.

Is there an ETA for v0.5.0 yet?

Yes. Jan 9th for v0.5.0-rc1

Sia is trading again on Poli  Wink

Although "deposits and withdrawals are temporarily disabled"

FYI here's a message I got from polo support which should give us all some relief.

Yes interesting. I haven't tried depositing or withdrawing? I saw that the coins buy/sell has changed. Assumed all was good?

Lets hope the issue is resolved.

Yes and hopefully soon - in the meantime, as others have commented, an update on behalf of the developers would be helpful.

Thanks.  Smiley

I haven't lost any coins on my own behalf, due to any bugs. Poli is out of our control however. Like all other coins on their exchange I have a good amount of confidence, but also realize there is inherent risk with putting all of your eggs in one basket  Grin

Lets hope the issue is resolved.

FYI I'm seeing some odd behaviors with the API where confirmedbalance is still reported although the wallet is locked (usually locked, after having been unlocked). Not sure of there's some caching or something, but the 'feature' does not seem solidly implemented either way.
