Meh.

I'm still irritated with the S3 -> S3+ debacle, and the S3 firmware still being broken such that the #$*@#!nG alarm still goes off when the pool goes dead - ignoring the checkbox setting in the webGUI to disable the alarm. Woke me up at 3am in the morning last night.

Thanks Bitmain.

The S3 launch was a tremendous disappointment and, IMO, burned a lot of goodwill with this community.

Experience is telling me not to touch the S5 with a 10-foot pole. Not batch 1's anyway.

Watch out for the "Neg-Rep-Dogie-Police".....
Yeah, I've pretty much given up on Bitmain now for quite a few reasons - dogie being one of them....... Cheesy

I hate to admit it, but I'm in the same boat.  If I want to deal with Bitmain, I'll communicate directly with Yoshi.  Some of dogie's posts are out in left field or trying to hard to represent a 'good deal'.

Same here, I only deal directly with them - they laugh at dogie more than we do, they even laugh at my profile sig about him too  Cheesy Cheesy

Kin' hilarious.

"If you modify *X* it's better than the S5*..

That is not an argument.  You people kill me.

Not an argument, but comparison.  modify *X* to approximate performance of S5.  If you only compare 1.7T to 1.1T then obviously 1.7T would win.

SP20 wins hands down in all departments. Bitmain still haven't got the S3 firmware right yet, so I can't wait to see their attempts at getting this working properly......

bloody hell Pat, what happened to your trust rating? you been getting in a scrap?

 Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

Yeah, dogie hates me, BAN hate me too..... Roll Eyes

None of it are from sales - they just hate me......

I got some -tive from that Hashfail shill, he's a proper cunt. lol

oh? what? the S5? yes... of course.... dogie is getting paid to give it massive prop, Bitmain are clearly a little behind the curve with regards to that one  Cheesy

-underclocking: chip voltage cannot be adjusted via settings like with the S3+/S4. instead, a lower supply voltage is necessary, which is not easily achieved without buying a dedicated 9V, 250W PSU per antminer in a few months from now.
...

I just wanted to write similat thing. Since it's "chained chips" design performance and efficiency will be correlative to PSU. Not many folks out there is willing to modify their new shiny 1500W platinium PSU's with 10 years warranty...

on offense but I would rather buy two S3 rather than S5

Wat.. the S5 is way more efficient.. are you new to mining?

PROS:
- same great design
- terrific efficiency in new chip
- good efficiency gains by running chips in series without dc/dc regulators
- at lower voltage these chips are perhaps the most efficient on the market right now (spondoolies can reach about the same values when drastically underclocked)

CONS:
- Price: shipping still is not included, and compared with offers like the spondoolies 3xSP20 microfarm (which can underclock to around 1TH/550W per unit) its not an obvious winner
-underclocking: chip voltage cannot be adjusted via settings like with the S3+/S4. instead, a lower supply voltage is necessary, which is not easily achieved without buying a dedicated 9V, 250W PSU per antminer in a few months from now.

it looks nice, but right now its not competitive enough with the SP20 units which have been dropping in price crazily (down to $0.31/GH at full speed, or ~0.45/GH at more efficient clockrates). Hopefully we see an option with better undervolting abilities or a S6 at 4TH/1.2kW

Well, IF Spond would give us $533 per machine for smaller # of units (as in large farm order), then S5 and SP20 would be roughly at par in cost/performance.
I assume that shipping would be $70 for S5. However, SP20 is a known performer, while quality of S5 is unknown, but I expect it to be good.
For me-I either have to find a solution to SP20 noise or I cannot expand with it at home due to family complaints (I wish i can set up a shed or something-but cannot). SP20 has the reading of 69dB in front at 1ft distance at fan setting 50 (which produces 1.35Th at ~800W). Running SP20 at hacked fan settings (550-600W and 1000-1100Gh) is possible, but greatly reduces production, so it is at least something to think about.
Re 9V-I look for a short time, but I haven't seen 9V >4A A PSU on amazon. Maybe they exist at 10A, but you have to dig in.

Bitmain, will you PLEASE start making the boards interchangeable with rack mount units … How fricken hard is it to engineer a board that can fit into a S4 or S2 for that matter … These units with the external power supply do not scale for home mining in any way … I think your engineers need to go to the woodshed , great work on power consumption but PLEASE think about helping the people who use real racks . Im not asking for a new unit, I would just like to swap out boards .

I am kind of disappointed... was more hoping of minimum .25/w/g...

Such a huge gap between the S1 & S3, this isn't even a gap since it's still the same, but improved, 28Nm process.

When it comes to hardware, I like to buy in halves... the process should always be twice as better as the previous.

Otherwise it's just too much work for nothing; I don't store or retire many miners, I sell them before they become obsolete.

Always keep a pair of each I buy as a memento and maybe future considerations.

Besides, I'm going 100% LC so, no thanks, I'll wait for C2 or another better liquid cooled miner, had more hopes for the S5 so I'll wait.

Any word yet on if the bulk S5 purchase includes shipping?

Also, what am I missing?  The C1 w/cooling is $325 @ 1000gh/s no psu, the S5 is $450 @ 1100gh/s no psu.  Over $125 for less mess and a little power savings?  That'd take over 150 days power difference at $.10/kwh.
