agree -- most good brand PSU last a long time due to better quality components - 1 year lifetime is very short and should not even be sold as PSU - just my 2 cents

PSU not lasting a year?

I have all Bitmain PSUs for my S5 and S7s

What's the MTBF for reasonable good brand PSU?

All the Corsair PSUs I scored were rated for 100k hours = 11+ years 24/7.

evga 1300 has 10 year warranty and runs S7 just fine with two extra PCIe extenders (each cost $4-5).
You can find used for $120-130 (no warranty then) or ~$170-175 new (it even comes with a jumper in a bag, so you don't have to make it or purchase separately).

Totally off topic... but you have a beautiful house Smiley

yeah, I second that...I would like to live in a more wooded area. Which state is it (somewhere North East)?

Hoover, Alabama

OT: Houston here, but we have a similar area up north a bit-Woodlands (name speaks for itself)-great for families w/kids, lots of space.

Agreed, about similar area as the northeast but I like the shape of the trees more in the northeast and northwest [More like Christmas trees].  Yes, plenty to do outdoors around here.  We have nice State parks, lakes, hunting, etc.  We are located at the foothills of the smokey mountains.  Houston, is a bit flat with as close as it is to the ocean.  Although, I don't mind flat when it's close to the ocean.  I just got back from vacation in Naples, Florida and Marco Island, Florida.  Quite flat down there.

I wasn't leaving it up long.  Only wanted to leave it there about 30 minutes or so to disprove the previous statement about home mining being over.  It all depends on how far one is willing to go with managing noise.

Also, don't believe the hype about PSU's lasting no more than a year.

"For sure my wife would not let me keep the S7 with that annoying loud howling sound so I had to come up with a solution."

Unless you go watercooled the S7 is not a good idea for home miners, imo. Seriously, what are you guys thinking with your homemade tubes and extensions, they are a serious fire hazard. Let alone the noise pollution.

The extreme heat these monsters are releasing have marked a red line for me. The chance something is burning or melting, as demonstrated with pictures in other threads, is warning sign enough that home mining has reached a limit. And 1200 watt PSUs, do they even last for more than a year 24/7? They are also damn expensive.

Designwise, I don't like the entire single heatsinks on the back of the S7- many have reported them to be falling off. Back in the days of gpu mining you were better off with an AMD 5870 than 5970 too. It was just too much of a hassle to get them cooled and running smoothly. The 5970s often died prematurely, no wonder.

Until something has improved, the S5s are probably as high as I will go until the (final) end of home mining in August 2016.

Hi Beffje,

Can you show us how you setup the tube - I am trying to reduce the sound from my S7s - the neighbors are complaining now :-(

Thanks
TMT

I put a piece of foam in front of the intake. Before I did that the miner was running at approx 75 Decimals

After It is down to 59 Decimals here is a screenshot of the temperature. The miner is sitting in a garage with 6 other miners going.

Won't this cause the miner to run even louder since you are blocking the intake temperature?

This is the cheapest way I found to dampen the sound without buying expensive sound insulation foam or mufflers.

that little thing changed the noise from 75dB to 59dB?
I will try it tomorrow...

wtf is that electricity job though Tongue

This was explained earlier in the thread, I believe that it is a ground which is tied into the existing system to the metal portions (wires & sheathing) of the duct for additional safety from any static or other electrical damage, a wise idea when there is an 8 BTC machine in there!

Yeah that's good. That's what I was hoping.. :-)
I saw the insulated one below it and was hoping you were not using that one.  Grin

If I were not going to heat the garage and basement with these I was thinking of doing the same..

my two are actually close to heating the entire 2000 square foot house.

2400 watts is about 9000 btu's of heat running 24/7

I'm running 2 S7 for heat so far, I think Im going to add a 3rd which I'm planning on supplying 75% of the heat this winter with the 3 S7's. I have then blowing into the return duct on a central forced hot air system. About 2900 sf of house that is only 8 years old and pretty well insulated. Also have a couple s3 blowing into return in my den.
