I dont exactly understand what you mean by altcoin season but I think anytime will be nice to promote a project as long as you have made enough research about it and you can go along with it. Since the market situation is not static, you definitely will have a lot of coins in your wallet when it pays off.

there is no specific time to join a bounty campaign. when you see that there is a good project that you deserve to follow, join in. if you doubt then don't ever try to join. paid or not is an end business.
It is better to sell little-known coins that you have received for the bounty and they are unlikely to ever grow, and then buy more promising and reliable coins.

This is a very vital point you have made here which should not be disregarded, during altcoins season is when everyone wants to impress people, and developers comes up with different promotions to attract people and they would really need hunters this time, some of these tokens gets to quickly enter exchange too. Altcoins season does not stay too long in the market, so we still have to be careful too in participating then, we have to look for very short campaigns that will fall within the time of altcoins, because after the altcoins season, we will go back to bear market which will make no difference for people that participate in long term project. I even prefer to go airdrop more during the altcoins season, because we get to gain more in terms of value.
I continue to participate in the bounty but have no illusions about high earnings. Of course I want to hope that the tokens received from the bounty will someday cost normal money.

I guess you have a question to answer which is " when is alts season"? To me there is no time that you cannot participate in bounty campaign as as am concern because no one can predict when a coin will surge and that is why we must be involve at all time.
