Clueless!
crap just got one of these..was thinking I could use it with a hub and some gekko 8gh sticks

seems not

oh well I'll plug it in ...I suppose I could use it to set up my remote wireless printer (old one) with a pi project

or am  I missing something on how to front end these on a miner besides an antminer u3?

you can. its what im doing.

thanks sent you a pm (i may yet salvage this 'impulse buy' yet..don't mind the impulse buy of toys ..but dang it ...even if I don't get to all my
projects they at least have to have SOME possibility of working out (or I blow something up) heh Smiley

has anyone managed to turn these into a simplified WIfi->ethernet adapter?

id love to program it with ssid/password for a few networks i use at home/office/travel so that i just plug it in, and hook up my miner to run without a problem.

I'm okay at dealing with routers, but couldnt quite figure this out without having to hard reset the device twice and being stuck in ethernet->wifi mode

a few pages back i posted a how-to to do what you want.. altho its not very stable.. when i tried to use it for wifi-ethernet-s5 the r1 kept crashing and restarting.

Even though my last U3 died I still left the R1 up and solo mining as part of the compac stick solo pool.  As a piece of hardware it's a fun little unit, very useful if you have a U3, but even if you just like tinkering with bitcoin gadgets then it's worth picking one up.

It is a neat piece of hardware. The R1 does have the nice thing of you really could leave it plugged in a wall for years and not notice electricity price for it. I ended up getting rid of mine after I sold my U3's.   If anyone has a U3 they honestly should invest in one of these and use Crazy Guy's  firmware.   It made my life so much easier.

Currently I'm using a RPI with some compacs as my "lotto" miners.   It is fun even though it chances are never happens.

Mikestang - is the fan still running on your dead U3? If not, you may be able to fix it by replacing the fan. I was sent a return unit with a dead fan that wouldn't hash(looks like the board is detecting the fan before powering up the chip). I replaced it with an old rbox fan and it's hashing away perfectly now.

There are no external signs as to why it stopped hashing - fan fires up, red led comes on when I plug in usb, but it's just a dead little ufo that refuses to hash.  I'm about to throw it away unless someone has a use for it.

While loading custom firmware, I managed to screw up 3 R1's by using too much force plugging them into a US socket.  When contacted by a customer with the same issue, I decided to document a quick fix which I used for my 3 units.

Issue:
R1 appears to be shorting out. Stays on for only a second unless applying force to the unit.

Diagnosis and resolution:
This issue is caused by pushing the folding prongs too hard against the internal leads. There is no longer a solid connection and the unit will not stay on without applying pressure.

Use a pry tool to open up the case.

Locate the folding prongs and remove them

Slightly bend the leads on the R1 side outwards so they can make contact with the prongs again.

how many U3's can the R1 support, on a 4port non-powered hub? 10-port powered hub?

I've seen 3 reported as the max, and I haven't been able to test more than 3 at a time. I'm not certain if this is a limitation of the R1 or a side effect of using an unpowered hub. When I had more U3s to play around with, I had issues running more than 3 units on an unpowered hub. I've read that users have been able to get more than 3 running on different systems with a powered hub, so it's possible it may work on an R1 as well.

On my 3 I have a cheap unpowered hub and seems to work fine.  Dont have a 4th to try anymore.  But 3 U3's definitely works.

And ofcourse I am using your custom firmware so I don't have to mess with zombies.  I do have some fan's running as my solo mining area which has U3's and compac's going.  But it does not take a ton to cool my solo area.

The hub has to be powered, I believe that is because the R1 does not provide enough usb power.  I don't know if there's a limit on how many it can handle.
