I think about this from time to time, in fact no too long ago I visioned bitcoin as being a currency that allowed for intergalactic payments... I mean theoretically it could with the contingency that our technology advances significantly.

of course can and the astronauts are also allowed to bring their own laptop or gadget. It's just that they have to reach the computer in the mission controller to get access web up here and unfortunately it can happen if there's a solid high-speed communication link.

It would have to compete with Aliencoin or some other cosmic crypto. This could prove to be very difficult.

I think this is impossible. Bitcoin needs internet. And in the Internet there probably is no Internet. Although, maybe I'm wrong. But even if there is an Internet there, I'm not sure that it's someone you need
I think there is something same on space like internet as the spacemen always remain in contact with the people on the earth who are at their space centers so if further development occurred in bitcoin then they will make it able to use under that technology to send it to space.

As I know now, bitcoins can be used wherever there is an internet connection or a system that can access it. If in space I do not know yet

what on the world is crazy thought is this. why the hell any astronaut needs money in space they aren't going to trade anything from alens anyway keeping the practical life a side if they are in space with some sort of wireless communication like a super  rays or anything(possibly internet) then yes they can do transfer money even in space there is no problem is I am not sure that the mobile will work there or not because the gravity and other stuffs can effect the phone's particles like they change change how battries work in space

...

Alas, Bitcoin can't really be used where I am visiting now (Peru), other than buying, selling and transferring.  Yes, I have read that there are a handful of places that accept BTC here, but NOWHERE that I have seen myself.  Peru's most noted BTC people are in a provincial city (Ica), not even here in Lima.

No BTC ATMs either.

Peru has a pretty free economy (inc. easy & legal currency exchange), so there is no real need for BTC, at least yet.

I can imagine a satellite with a small miner included so in case every damn miner quits the blockchain will still go one...

This is the single greatest thing I have read all day.

Satellites don't exist.

Just curious, since the Internet is mostly an Earthly thing... would astronauts be able to access and transfer their Bitcoins whilst traveling throughout the solar system?

this is a serious question, but it is also a funny question in the same time.
the answer will be variative. it will be depend on your perspective about the earth.
I mean your perspective about flat earth vs globe earth.
I am serious, now I dont know which one should I belieive in this case.
If you believe in globe earth, the answer is yes,
but if you are a flatter, the answer is no. because no one can travel outside this earth

You have said a very complicated answer there my friend he is just asking about the use of bitcoin outside the atmosphere of earth and you just said an irrelevant answer by giving a question that are unrealistic, would you yourself actually believe that the earth is flat? by giving something that very unrealistic you yourself should really know about it, and giving a speculation that flat earth can't be traveled by someone? where is the topic about bitcoin there?

I think the bitcoin is unique, as long as there is internet access then we can use it anywhere including in space. but it seems like this does not happen in the near future, perhaps 100 years or more when there was already a life in space.

For the moment look impossible, there is no life in space much less internet access is an important factor for using bitcoin. I think it is better we use bitcoin on Earth to replace the system of the bank.

Where would they use it? Maybe in the future when we have colonies on Mars bitcoin could be a currency there)
We didn't know this could happen, I think it is too much if I use bitcoin on mars, remember at this time the earth does not 100% there is internet access.
The technology is really evolving and a lot of things already changed since then so it is possible to use bitcoin in mars because they just need internet connection and also computer then they can do transactions that is easy and fast with bitcoin unlike using fiat. Bitcoin will be perfect fit for the people in the space and mars, in my opinion.

I am not an astronaut myself, but I know for a fact that they have internet access and computers in the ISS. They probably have strict rules of what they're allowed to do on the computers, but I imagine using Bitcoins in space would be no problem. Maybe they have to use a web wallet, since I imagine they're not allowed to download anything for security reasons.

Winding down.

If there would be a living  individual in the outer space and has its strong connection to the internet, then i could probably say YES.Everything could be put into possibility if only there's always a way.

Good idea for the astronaut to have a currency and a cash to use while they are in the space but surely it is useless unlike they will buy things not for there seld but for there family. But if they have a stable internet connection in the space they can use bitcoin i dont think they have it.
why should they  carry use bitcoin there in space, is there any shops of aliens from where they have to purchase something , that that can be useless , because they  have nothing to do with currency, and there is no life there, they have to do research on different things which can help them in getting information about the space.

Actually i dont know if astronauts needs to use bitcoin in the outer space but ive read some article that astronauts can use internet in space but some kind of laser beam thing i think i forgot the name but the point is they can really use internet in space.
In this modern age anything is possible.
