Let's hope it can be used. It is possible the astronauts may need to purchase some stuffs from the aliens in space and bitcoin would come in handy right? Grin and that is as long as they can access their wallet in space!

Yeah bitcoins can use in space but it only use whom are astronauts.

But would it work if the space station has a like an ethernet? Should be working then, and also transaction confirmations could be removed so there's no need for the network to approve them.

I think bitcoin can be used in the space if there is the internet out there. If there is the internet, you can do everything with crypto, not only Bitcoin. But it is not neccessary to use bitcoin outside this planet

Why wonder with those kind of questions? If I am there in space I would just be amazed on how the world look like outside of it and then maybe just stop and keep looking at it. Imagine looking at those stars at the very nearest position. It is like a VIP pass in a concert.
Let us just go back to the world and wonder how could we make something good out of the line of crypto currencies. This question wont help much.

They can use Bitcoins in space, but how the transactions are going to get confirmed? For example, if they are some 50 million kilometers away, sending a radio signal to the earth will take almost 6 years.

If they have internet connection and mobiles which can connect to internet, yes, that is possible. Many people asking why would they want to use BTCs in the spac, but why not? Space can be boring sometimes for astronauts, nothing to do there... Maybe they would want to trade, to access their BTC balance, to gamble, who knows...  Smiley

There is a possibility that Bitcoin can be use in space.  Austronaut can communicate in space, Im sure developer will find a way to transfer Bitcoin in space even if it is just for fun purposes only.  Who will use Bitcoin in space anyway?  I bet Astronaut won't have time for Bitcoin shopping.

Well maybe the astronauts will use bitcoin to buy alien guns, UFOs, and other stuffs from ET. Since I found a thread that the OP of the thread said that Bitcoin was from the aliens. Link: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/i-had-a-dream-aliens-brought-us-bitcoin-to-save-our-monetary-system-1902211

Maybe that is the whole purpose of bitcoin here, to have transactions with the aliens around the universe.  Grin If that happens, Satoshi's value will be more than 1USD  Cheesy

[Sarcasm alert! Cheesy Grin Grin]

Your definition of 'space' is vague and can refer to other definitions of 'space' as well. But to be clear, the ISS provide internet connection to its crew on-board. It's worse than dial-up internet but is reliable for sending and receiving general emails. Basically, bitcoin can work in outer space if you have a wallet that only needs KB/s to receive tx data.
it's not "worse than dial-up": http://www.tested.com/science/space/449539-how-fast-isss-internet-and-other-space-questions-answered/
It's 10Mbit/sec down and 3Mbit/sec up, like an ADSL connection.

Just curious, since the Internet is mostly an Earthly thing... would astronauts be able to access and transfer their Bitcoins whilst traveling throughout the solar system?

Internet is not just an "Earthly thing", it is also present in the outer space. ISP uses the satellites roaming around the earth in order to transmit data at a longer range. So basically, internet is not exclusive for earth use. Astronauts uses internet in their base in order to communicate to the person on earth, specially to the government. So this thread is already answered before it even started.

I prefer to have food in the outer space thank you.

I think they can still used bitcoin as long there is internet connection. The thing is how they can sustain it and I dont know if they can use it as fast as they could. And, I dont think in their real situation bitcoin is needed.

The general rule is that if you can connect to a valid node on the Bitcoin network, then you can use Bitcoin. Of course the speed of light would be a factor if and when astronauts start moving away from Earth orbit, but I've been hearing that it may be possible to "make upgrades" to get around this problem.

There is a probability that internet access can get up to space and I don't think it is just for earthly use because satellites that are in space transfer back signal right I think it can also be transmitted to the space station or the space shuttle astronaut board on too, I think that internet signals can reach out to the atmosphere around the moon, but I think the use of bitcoin is not needed in space but I think internet can be access in space in my opinion, so maybe you can surely earn bitcoin into space.

I don't think is possible because in space or in another planet there may not be Internet network. Bitcoin can only be transferred to another person through Internet. I think we are not over imaginate what bitcoin is and forgot that it is a cryptocurrency.

Sure they could use them, but why would they need them?  Currently we aren't buying and selling things in space, so not sure why an astronaut would need to be rolling in BTC.

Actually this funny thread and speaking about useless thing in bitcoin. You will be get internet connection in earth that's also not in all the places. Therefore, I suggest op to close this thread.
This is not effective discussion about bitcoin. First, try to use in your country and wait till it will become legal money.

Funny question. If internet available in the Moon, then why would anyone have problem in using bitcoin in space or moon?

I think astronauts don't need to use bitcoin in space and why they should use it ?
But if they access to the internet, they can use it normally because bitcoin works on a digital technology platform, it depends entirely on internet.
