Yes I agree. Another possible move is Ng5. It totally blocks Re6 but leads to more complex positions and I couldn't figure it out. Nd5 seemed safer, if still complex. Maybe not the best reason for a move though...

I was joking about not discussing future moves. I expect Re6 Qf4 to follow. Then I have no idea but I don't see danger for us as we have plenty of places to move the queen if needed.

Are here also players from chess.com?

I play there quiet often so if anyone want to play, just search for avw1982 and challenge me.

I could not figure out all the variations when I recommended Rf6 but I knew one thing. This game will not be boring! Passive defense hurt us against letsplayagame (resignation there is imminent) so I wanted to be more aggressive in this one.

I don't think 16.Rc1 guarding the knight and allowing 17. Qf4 solves anything because after 16.Rc1 Raf8 we are in the same situation because f4 is still not safe. Maybe Qg5 is possible after Re6 but that looks like a dangerous square too. Black can attack us with h6 and our queen seems misplaced there.

This is a complex position! I am still trying to decide between Nd5 and Rdd1. The dumbest looking option of all (because of our last move) Rdd1 allowing our queen to retreat to d2 may actually be the safest.

As of right now I like 16.Nd5 the best but things get complicated after Re6

Yesterday I thought we were doing really well (unlike Peter Svidler we never wasted time with Rb1 and we were able to play b3 and Bb2 which I assume was his plan with Rb1 although he did not accomplish it: https://chess24.com/en/embed-tournament/baku-world-cup-2015/7/1/3). We may still be doing fine but Rf6 has suddenly made this game extremely complicated. We need to be very careful.


I understand your logic but the problem is that it is hard to evaluate a plan one move at a time. After 16.Nd5 Re6 we actually have several options including one that does not involve moving our queen. Looking at this position is giving me a headache.

Perhaps we could only discuss multiple moves in advance in an effort to convince voters to reject a potentially bad move (like I tried to do to reject 16.Nh4 above) but not show all of our cards for plans we find promising.

16. Rc1 defending our knight so that after they play Re6 we can play Qf4 without losing a piece.

I'll admit I didn't expect this Rf6 move so that plan may have to take a back seat to protecting the queen. Still considering options.

That would fall into a trap. If Rae8 white plays Rad1 (smooth said that was his plan) then if Nb4 white can play a3. After Nc2 Rxc2 Bxc2 b4 white will win two minor pieces for their rook.

If we move our knight somewhere else white can play Nd4 taking control of the center and attacking our bishop.

If we defend the pawn with the rook on e8, we can move our knight to a better square. The rook does really nothing on a8. We could better move it to the center so he get a function.

If the knight doesnt have to defend it any more we could play for example Nb4 and make some extra pressure on a2. Probally after that to c2 so we could go after his queen.

Rae8 is not a good move. e7 is already defended by our knight so our rook does nothing on e8. We cant advance our e7 pawn because we would lose our pawn on d6 (Monero may double their rooks on d1 and d2). Our rook on e8 would be poorly located behind our pawn on e7.

Whites queen is on a bad square and defending the knight on c3. Rf6 and Re6 will be useful.

I will go for Rae8.

Think it's too early to move up our rook to f6. There are to much minor pieces which cant close him in there.

At first that move looked very strange to me and I was worried about Nd5 but 16.Nd5 Re6 looks good for us. Since we can't move our e or d pawns right now I guess an alternative method of development is appropriate.

Rf6 with the idea of Re6 attacking their queen.

I like ArticMine's move Rd2. We're obviously going to follow with Rfd1. Black will continue on defense for quite a while and we can just continue attacking.
